N. Bahr el Ghazal governor appoints new deputy

June 8, 2013 (JUBA) – The governor of South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal state, Paul Malong Awan, has issued an executive order relieving his deputy, Madut Dut Yel, and appointing Salva Chol Ayat as his replacement, according to a statement broadcast by South Sudan Television on Saturday.

“I thank him for the commendable role and the tireless sacrifice made in the service of the people of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State”, said a copy of the order seen by Sudan Tribune.

No reason for the move was cited in statement and neither the office of the governor nor state ministry of information has made any further statement on the matter.

Governor Awan cited a provision in the state transition constitution under article 90 (1) as the basis of the appointment of the new deputy governor with has taken place with immediate effect.

“I, Lt. Gen Paul Malong Awan, Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Aweil, do hereby decree the appointment of the above mentioned person as Deputy Governor and Minister of Law Enforcement Agencies in the Government of Northern Bahr el Ghazal with effect from June 8, 2013″, reads the order bearing the signature of governor Awan.

Ayat was one of the senior army officers which President Salva Kiir Mayardit in January removed from the active military service, placing them on a reserve list until they could be found a new assignment.

The new deputy governor has previously served as the first deputy governor after the signing of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement which ended over two decade long war with the Khartoum government. The deal lead to South Sudan’s independence in 2011.

The order dated 8 June also named Tong Deng Anei as the state’s new minister of Health, replacing Tong Atak Mel.

Mareng Chuor Deng has been named minister of youth and sports, replacing Tong Deng Anei. Changes were also made in the two commissions.
