February 28, 2013 (JUBA) – Jonglei’s Lou-Nuer community leaders from Akobo county have petitioned the government to provide more protection to the civilian population following the recent brutal killing of their members by a rebel group.

The Pibor County-based rebels of David Yauyau, a Murle, unleashed their violent rebellion on migrating unarmed Lou-Nuer civilians of Walgak, killing over 100 of them, mostly children and women.

A team of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) that inspected the site of the attack confirmed the incident and verified the number of dead bodies.

Thousands of people were also displaced by the incident and have crossed over to the neighbouring Ulang county of Upper Nile state, prompting fears of a humanitarian disaster in the area.

The community leaders who were accompanied by Justice John Luk Jok and the Akobo county commissioner, Goi Joyool, on Thursday met with the country’s vice President, Riek Machar, in Juba and presented to him a number of concerns which included provision of protection and increased humanitarian interventions in the affected areas.

Vice President’s press secretary, James Gatdet Dak, told the Sudan Tribune that the community, which was also willing to make peace and reconcile with the Murle community, asked for compensation of the cattle raided as well as return of women and children that were abducted by the neighbouring tribe.

The largest state in South Sudan in both population and land mass has been experiencing inter-communal conflicts and a number of post-independence rebellions previously by late George Athor as well as the current rebellion by David Yauyau.

Murle community leaders have also alerted the authorities that the armed youth in the community have joined the rebellion in avoiding the state-wide disarmament exercise which commenced last year.

Vice President Riek Machar also visited the main Murle town of Pibor last Sunday in an effort to convince the Murle community to listen to the government and urged the Murle youth through their elders to abandon Yauyau and rebellion.

The deputy minister of Interior, Salva Mathok Gengdit, however told the press on Thursday that David Yauyau has refused to respond positively to the government’s offer for peaceful settlement to his rebellion.

Yauyau, a semi-illiterate priest turned politician, rebelled in 2010 after losing his attempt to become a member of parliament for his area. His rebellion has been supplied with weapons and ammunition by Khartoum to destabilise Jonglei state, officials have maintained, although this is denied by Sudan.

The South Sudan leadership has urged Murle civilians to move to their towns from their scattered villages in the bushes for better protection and to avoid being hurt in the event of the likely intensive and extensive military confrontations with the rebels before the rainy season.

Government should not underestimate his might of destruction. Shooting guns don’t require education.

"semi-illiterate priest". Don’t think he is illiterate and he won’t cause destruction. Don’t think he will be kind to people because he is a priest. He is a rebel and needs to be treated as such without ignorance.

The communities who are capable of defending themselves do not need to beg the government for protection every time they are attacked! If the GOSS is incapable of stopping the Murle; then the capable communities will take the matters into their own hands! Murle should not regret when it happened!

When Lou Nuer took the law into their own hands in Dec. 2011 every body cried. The government cried. The UN cried. Dr. Riek went and stopped thousands of Lou Nuer who wanted to capture Pibor county and discipline the Murle. Now the government should provide protection to the Lou Nuer it stopped and disarmed.

The thing I have learnt from Murle is that you can finish them without them knowing or caring about it. They can extinct and only realize it when they are less than a 100 in total population. They have been dying of every day of hunger, malaria and typhoid in the bushes and STDs are a hinderence to their births. Murle have no wise people I guess who can see their future.

i believe dinka are playing a dirty game here.first they disarmed lou nuer so they will fall as an easy prey for the murle.then fired TABAN and many other nuer generals from their offices so when the oil get resumed and exported no more money will go to the nuer.soon nuer will be the lowest class in south sudan. i realy never thought dinka are that smart and clever.

Soldier Lou Nuer or Nuer in general are very brave in natuere, they did not vent their back for human being either white, Red or black man.
whether Nuer was disarmed, there will be a time for Nuer to be free from weak government of South Sudan.

am not agree with H.E vice president Dr.Machar or even the chiefs request from the government to provide more protection, all the tribes which have always being disturbed by what so call Murle, must protect themselves,Dinka,Nuer,Anyuak,Kachipo,Taposa,Mundari,Loluba are you not able to protected yourself from one small tribe?

Gabrial Lou Nuer where well protected befor disarment while other tribes were rearmed by Government like what Kuol did to Murle and Dinka Bor,
If the Bor did not protect themsevle from Murle it’s thier weakness. while Lou Nuer was disarmed four time 2006,08,010 and 2012. neither Government did to Anuak,Taposa,Mundari Dinka in general nor Murle.
Lou have a right to requesting more protection.
