December 5, 2012 (JUBA) - More than 80 people have been killed during an attack in the Wunkech area of Warrap State over the weekend, the Tonj South County commissioner, Mario Monydhieth Gor told Sudan Tribune on Wednesday.

The raiders, claim the commissioner, were a group of an elusive group of armed cattle rustlers who are members of the Gok branch of the Dinka tribe from Cueibet County in neighbouring Lakes State.

"Raiders attacked 12 cattle camps in Wunkec and stole a number of cows", Commissioner Gor said. He condemned the act and claimed that more than 80 people, mostly innocent civilians, have been killed in the attack, which lasted from Saturday 1 to Sunday 2 December.

"They have killed a lot of people. They came at dawn. People were still in the cattle camp. We still do not have clear information at the moment but we believe more than eighty lives have been lost. Only eleven dead bodies on the sides of the raiders have been found", explained commissioner.

Gor said the police, in collaboration with youth groups from the area, had managed to recover some cows but between 300 and 500 cows are estimated to have been stolen from each of the 12 cattle camps.

"The raiders also attacked Cueichok Boma [sub-district] on Sunday morning, setting the area on fire", said Gor.

He called for an immediate deployment South Sudan’s army (SPLA) and related armed forces to recover the stolen cows.

"It will be a big disaster if these cows are not recovered and returned immediately because cows are [a] source of living for our people. I have told officials in the state government. I have talked with the minister of local government and the acting governor. I told them the real situation here", he said.

Manyuat Akot, an eye witness from the area told Sudan Tribune from Tonj on Wednesday that he has counted 71 dead, including twenty women and 14 children and one of whom was a three month old baby.

Akot said 16 people have been admitted to Tonj Hospital, while those with critical gunshots are being moved to Wau Teaching Hospital.

"It is very bad situation. I really do not understand why our people killed themselves like that. I have never seen such situation before. They are burning villages", he claimed.

LAKES STATE RESPONSE

The government of neighbouring Lakes State has responded to the reports of the raid and by assuring the public that those responsible will be held accountability and will face justice.

The Deputy Governor of Lakes State, Mabor Achol Kuer, made a surprise visit to Cueibet County of Lakes State on Wednesday to pass a message of condolences to the family who their son were killed in Wunkec of Tonj South County of Warrap state.

Mabor condemned Cueibet County’s youth for raiding cows from neighbouring Warrap State.

"Those who were involved in this attempt cattle raiding in Tonj South County of Warrap State must [...] face immediate justice", there was "no way for them to escape law", said Mabor.

Cueibet County Commissioner, Isaac Mayom Malek reported on Sunday, that a ring leader of the cattle raiding youth group was arrested when admitted himself to Cueibet County hospital suffering from gunshot wounds.

Malek said that a policeman is guarding the suspect until he is well enough to face justice.

Authorities in Lakes State say the raid was carried out by a group of criminals and, therefore, it cannot be regarded as an attack by the Cueibet County community on Tonj South county.

Isaiah Abraham has been killed. He was a soldier and major by rank in the SPLA, has never been abroad as many think. His real name is Diing Chan Awuol. Like millions of southerners, he hated tribalism, corruption and he criticized the government for that. Salva ordered his Gogrial henchmen to slaughtered him. We are getting closer and only time will tell.

Although some of us are living in diaspora we are not in peace at all, when we keep seeing these unneccessary killings by our own people against each other on television. It is so painful to some of us who don’t even see the corpses more often than the people on the ground. It is very hurting, and What is happening to our people somebody out there is responsible for it.

This rampant killing instigated by Lake state at most is becoming an irrational and senseless. How long will our people learn that killing one another is morally wrong? It is completely sickening to hear innocent life are terminated every now and then over animals. Do we value animals more than life? Something very outlandish is going on in Lake State and government intervention should be paramount

A Dinka rustles another Dinka cows! I thought the dinka community had left this senseless act long time ago! Our people are doing their best to pull us back to a stone stage big times. We often react angrily when the outsiders call us primitives & uncivilised, but our people often prove the outsiders point that we are after all, uncivilised. Sickening indeed.

Stop draming nonsense. Killing another South Sudanese is unacceptable. These communities’ wreckers must be apprehended and hanged. They are dangerious criminals. Lake State or it entire communities can’t be held responsible esp when know how youth are becoming outlaws in many States/places.

Cattle raiding had been there for centuries between these communities and reason we don’t have to hear about them were because we didn’t have internet news on our fingertips 24/7 and 12 month in a year. The leadership between all these communities is the only thing that is needed to hold any of the people who participate in these crimes accountable.

Dinka is a European word which was used to describe Nilotics who remove lower teeth and mark their faces. This group today fall under the three names:Muonyjang,Nuer/Shiluk and Jieng.Dinka is therefore synonymous with Nilotics

Dinka means "Diing GaaK." Arab traders found some Dinka youth along the Nile and asked who they were. They replied "we’re youth from Sultan Diing Gaak." These Arabs mispelt or misheard it and jot down "Din-Ka." The word ’dinka’ has no bad meaning in it (just someone name) and has nothing to do with Europeans. In fact it was already in use when Europeans arrived in 1800s.

Kenyang.Yes it has nothing to do with Nuer to be called Dinka Nuer as you have already said that they belong to Diing Gaak like you may or I may ’ve people Ruach Naath and Kenyang Autiak.Dinka and Nuer are completely different tribes, but have something in common where an individuals.Tell to Mapuor that it is too late for his lies! Dinka is not a European word!Do all Europeans speak in one Language

        Kenndy and Ruach
I disagreed with you, Dinka is a British name used to replace the real name of tribe call Muonyjang or Jeing by unknown reason.
And to a proofed it, before Dinka came in contact with Coloniels , the Dinka neighbors such as:The Nuer they were called Dinka as Jiang, Shilluk call Dinka Jango, Arabs Misseray and Equatorians call Dinka Jiengge.

,,,all these words are just different accents from Jieng.and that is what Mr Mapour refer to because the name call Dinka was not existing before European.
The same thing the Nuer call themselves the Naath, might be the word Nuer came from nowhere just like word Dinka.

When a thief break into the house and stole a chicken, he will come tomorrow and take a cow. If you think your government is doing anything for cattles raiders, you fooling yourself. The government we have is a self serves government not different from cattles raiders. the different, these people steal while sitting on a chair and guarded while others walk thousand miles to raid cattle camp.
