October 10, 2012 (RUMBEK) - A group of South Sudanese youth living in New South Wales (NSW) Australia have set up a branch of the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) Youth League to educate the Diaspora about South Sudan and the ruling SPLM.

The group, the first to be established in Australia, was created after two meetings in September in which the members declared their commitment to the SPLM "and its efforts to delivering good governance, peace and unity and prosperity for all south Sudanese“, Isaac Akec, one of the members told Sudan Tribune.

Hundreds of South Sudanese competed to be elected chairman of the new group, with Maper Akec Gum winning the poll. Speaking after his victory Gum said his efforts would go into helping the South Sudanese community and Australians understand the SPLM’s vision and mission.

Gum asked young South Sudanese people to contribute to the political and socio-economic development of South Sudan, which gained independence from Sudan in July last year. He described the SPLM-led government as a just “an administration working hard everyday to progress the country on all fronts and not as a rich institution to provide jobs for everybody”.

The image of the former rebel group has been tarnished by corruption since it came to power in southern Sudan in 2005 as part of the deal that ended decades of war and allowed the region to secede last year.

Gum said that youth were “great assets” and encouraged young people to seek training and employment, especially in the private rather than the public sector as the government could not be expected to create jobs.

"We should be looking at our potential to create opportunities in self-employment” he said.

PNG - 26.4 kb

The SPLM-YL Chairman for New South Wales said he wants to see policies that help young people lead better lives, by improving gender equality, addressing HIV/AIDS, capacity-building and youth employment.

Johnson Garang Ngor, one of the new organisation’s founding members said the "formation of SPLM-YL NSW will provide a platform for youth to stage their full participation and contribute directly to the party and governance affairs".

We don’t have problem building SPLM wherever it is needed but the issue is how is this SPLM-Australia is gonna work while the Main SPLM-South Sudan is corrupted? If you want to go up on the Tree, you must have better choices. Looks first what kind of tree you wanna go on! Is there any harm? What do you needs from it! Can you and others benefit from it! Anyways, good luck but don’t breed corrupt

The aim of that SPLM Australia is not to run the mission and the vision of the main SPLM. They just want to create a corruption training office where they will be demanding the corrupt Cowboy government to send them some Dollars to run the affairs of the party in the diaspora as a cover up. the officials will be sending the looted public fund through that branch. it is all shit.

This forum was created to add voice into what is now seriously lacking in the party. Diaspora was one most key important constituency in the lead upto the independence of our country. Recently, debates on what would be the future of young Nation got hijacked as corruption becomes rampant and diaspora esp young pepole are centrally and worryingly champhioning these criticism move.

Mr Isaac Maper Akec for leading youth in the greater NSW Sydney into this one vital formation of YL as mobilisation wheel for them to realise that SPLM party could still accommodation their future dreams

I hope this will not be a mouth piece of propaganda that is set to cover misrule, inefficiency and tribalism in South Sudan. The group should relocate to South Sudan. That job can be done by diplomatic mission that should be set in the capital of the said country.

SPLM with an aggressive neighbour, still pretty much in dire international support esp in the most considerate nations like Australia. And who is better positioned to do this than the prolific educated young fellows under the umbrella YL

It’s a great move by these individuals who have managed to formed SPLM youth league. our people in diaspora need education about what they can contribute to the prosperity of our nation-South Sudan. Criticsm ain’t bad but the ill-lauguage we often use portrays lack of understanding of basic fundamental policies of SPLM as a party. I admit that this league belongs to NSW, state in Australia. Did you ever asked yourself why the party support has dwindled under the outdated and out of touch politicians? Injecting new blood into politics is the way forward and I congratulate the SPLM youth in NSW for creating SPLM-YL NSW.
