September 25, 2012 (JUBA) - United Nations peacekeepers on Monday said they witnessed an airdrop in remote part of South Sudan’s Jonglei State, but could not confirm who carried out the act or what the dropped consignment contained.

The incident comes barely a day after South Sudan army (SPLA) accused Sudan army of backing rebels loyal to renegade David Yau Yau, who are fighting in the region.

Phillip Aguer, the SPLA spokesperson on Sunday told Sudan Tribune that Sudanese military aircraft airdropped about eight parcels of weapons to the rebels, who he added, later attacked Likuangole town in Jonglei before they were repulsed by the army.

He said the provocation, which Sudan denies, sends wrong signals to the ongoing talks in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

"There are always some elements in Khartoum who remain opposed to the peace process between Sudan and South Sudan. Their actions, as we have often seen, are always contrary to what the leadership of both countries is trying to achieve in the interest of peace," said Aguer.

Kouider Zerrouk, the UN spokesman in South Sudan told Reuters that their peacekeepers witnessed a white fixed-wing aircraft drop seven or eight packages, about three kilometres from Likuangole town on Saturday morning.

"The mission is not in a position to confirm who was in the aircraft or what was dropped," he added.

The two incidents, come as South Sudan’s Salva Kiir and his Sudanese counterpart, Omer Al Bashir meet in Addis Ababa to find ways of resolving all outstanding post-session issues between the two neighbours.

Sudan and South Sudan fought over two decades of a bloody civil war, which ended in 2005 with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). A referendum held six years later saw South Sudanese overwhelmingly for separation, leading to South Sudan’s independence in July last year.

The two nations, however, remain locked up in negotiations on several outstanding issues, including borders, and the disputed areas including Abyei.

South Sudan took 75% of oil production when it seceded from Sudan last year, but a dispute over oil transportation fees between the two early this year, forced the young to shut down its oil production which represents 98% of South Sudan’s annual budget

Aguer should not be that naive to think that Bashir doesn’t know about the planned operation in Jonglei.

iF you the UNMISS cannot verify South Sudan’s allegations, then you must leave South Sudan because your work has to be in Afghanistan, Syria, somalia. South sudan has to deal with Sudan without intervention or UNSC

I don’t know how weak are the commanders commanding SPLA forces in Pibor of Jongulei State.
SPLA forces would have rushed in to take control of airdrops.
when we were at the outskets of Ikotos,we captured the airdrops from the hands of SAF until we captured the town the other day.

"Cry baby" GOSS , instead of wasting time on crying and whining to UN which at no time will do anything , it would be a fortunate life serving effort to besiege the area as of now. Entrench them for a good time to force Yau Yau and hist cohorts to submit or die vainly like George Athor. A time wasted complaining will be time added for more lives to lost.

I really wonder how weak is the SPLA to be able to let Khartoum carryout an air dropping of Arms supply to the rebel with a distance of 3 kilometers from SPLA base? I think this was done with full knowledge of the supporters of this rebellion in Juba within the rank of the government.

How weak is the SPLA is not to encounter the Air dropping by Khartoum in a nearer distance of 3 kilometers from SPLA base? I think this rebellion has a strong back up both in Juba and Khartoum as well. Kuol Diem need to be replace from been a A central commander for Jonglei forces.

If this was really an arms drop, how do you know it was Khartoum doing it? illicit Arms trade is a global business worths billions of dollars a year. It could’ve been any arms dealer worldwide, including Ethiopian or Kenyan arms dealers.
and if SPLA was three kilos away, they could have got there in 2 minutes, couldn’t they.

Oh dear, these tribal cabals called SPLA are good at unleashing violence on the civilians. Top SPLA generals are good at looting money, lies, crime, complaint and accusation. Why accusing? Just shoot the planes down and confiscate all the airdrops. Accusing KHT is not the solution. With 40% of RSS budget allocated to the SPLA,no anti aircraft. SPLA should be disdanded as they have lost credibility

Top SPLA generals including Kiir himself used to feast on Late Garang’s talents. All military strategies were Garang’s creation. If John Garang were to die before the 2005 CPA, the Arabs would have overan the South long over due. The intransigence of Kiir has blocked his mind and degenerates his little brain too. Kiir will only reason when there are women and liquor around.
