September 21, 2012 (BOR) - Twic East County in South Sudan’s Jonglei State, this week, has banned the consumption of alcohol at marriage and funeral ceremonies as well as other public events.

If alcohol is found in the marriage ceremony, the commissioner of Twic County, Dau Akoi Jurkuch, told Sudan Tribune, the family of the groom and the bride will have to pay a fine of 3,500 South Sudanese pounds (SSP) each.

Akoi called on the neighboring counties not carry any alcoholic drinks to Twic East County when they are attending marriages, funerals or other gatherings.

The commissioner made his orders known in ceremony held in his county headquarters of Panyagoor during the election of the county’s Paramount Chief on Tuesday 18 September.

Twic East Paramount Chief Elections

Manyok Ajak Majok won the election beating Duot Ajang Duot and Awai Ajang Awai for the position of paramount chief.

Speaking to Sudan Tribune on the phone from Panyagoor, Commissioner Akoi saud the elections was democratic and unanimously accepted by the public.

According to the Commissioner, Manyok Ajak Majok, received 54 votes, Duot Ajang Duot with 33 votes and Awai Ajang Awai with 2 votes.

Also in the elections Duot Ajang was elected Head Chief of Kongor Payam [District], Awai Ajang Awai the head chief of Lith Payam, Atem Ajak Patieu of Nyuat Payam and Ayuel Warabek for Ajoung Payam.

The commissioner urged the chiefs to corporate to achieve peace in their areas.

Earlier this year the six tribes in the Jonglei capital of Bor in an attempt to end the cycle of ethnic violence in the area. At the turn off the year raids and counter raids mainly between the Nuer and Murle ethnic groups affected over 140,000 people as they were forced to flee their homes and/or need humanitarian assistance.

Disarmament in Jonglei

In December 2011 around 6,000-8,000 armed youth primarily from the Luo Nuer ethnic group were mobilized militarily to launched a series of systematic attacks on the Murle tribe of Pibor County over a 12 day period crossing into January 2012.

Over 1,000 people were killed in violence between the groups in 2011 and nearly 900 more in the New Year attacks, which began on 27 December and ended - after a series of reprisal attacks from Murle armed groups - around 4 February.

Abductions of women and children, the destruction of homes and the displacement of thousands of civilians are common dynamics of the conflict a report, compiled by the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) with support from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) found in June 2012.

The unrest led to South Sudan President Salva Kiir ordering a state-wide disarmament process deploying around 15,000 soldiers and police to the area.

However, some groups have avoided the process and a rebellion headed by David Yauyau continues in Pibor County.

The Shari`a that the South has resisted was the one that deny rights for the non-muslims to be president, prime mininster, chief and commander in-chief of the army, speaker of the national assembly, development, running the national finance, practising non-islamic cultures on the national TV, infrustructures including Education, Health and roads and many others. I thought you know that.

Aclcoholic is one of the causes of problem in whole Sudan. I do remembered the clashes back then between Adhiok and Kongor which lead them to brand each other with songs that linked to alcohol. Personally I do welcome the idea of banning it in public consumption and we need government to be aware on Khartoumers who usually flight from Khartoum and come to drink here in South.

The needs to ban irresponsible consumption of Alcohol in South Sudan is a necessitated task for the society to uphold its moral responsibilty. I was terribly shocked and numbed when I heard that the first Company to be openned in South Sudan after its independence was an Alcohol Company. I also suspect that Alcohol is behind corruption and poor management of communities affairs. I’m for the ban

Alcohol should not be ban instead of amending the laws and regulations that abide those drunks in the public especially when those committed a crime. Also, drinking must be limited at night in the public areas. after the above,if you found breaking the law you are entitle to pay the fine and other punishment. Thanks

    LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
I think banning alcohol in north Sudan is considered to be one of the strongest reason why Jonobean voted "No" for unity and separated the south so they can relax and enjoy drinking during the daylight in the south but a surprise decision like this will make them very confuse!LOL

I think people like Mr. No Logic will become very upset by a decision like this as the guy is considered to be one of "Aragy" some people called it "Abiad Damirak-means white conscience",he is one of the "Aragy" strong supporter and fan! I really feel sorry 4 him!

It’s a pity that the wounds of separation have not yet healed in ur hearts (N. Sudanese). Junubin voted ag’st the selfishness of the greedy arabs who stupidly thought Islam would create heaven in Sudan. You disingenuously denied alcohol for Junubin while you secretly adore it. Hypocrites! The ban of alcohol was only in ceremonies & public places, you fool! Get back to sch Mr Idio

The Commissioner has ban alcohol in his County without consulting his elders or community. How can the commissioner ban drinking in Funerals and Marriage occassions? Do the Commissioner knows that Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior turned water into wine when He found people in the wedding ceremony without drinks? I will appreciate if the fine 3,500 SSP is for those found drunk and causing insecurit

Alcohol was the real reason behind north-south fighting!
Unless we look deeply into the root cause of the problem then we can’t find any real cure, it’s true that southerners had lost around 2.5 million persons during the fighting with north because of alcohol, southerners hate to stay with north that forbids them from drinking alcohol,

Banning alcohol in South will be a disaster for Homo-Muslims of Khartoum, because they usually used to come and drink in South. Three days later they return to North and start lying to their Molester Mohammed. The reason why Khartoum was fighting for the so called Four Rights of Citizenship was linked to their freedom of movable where they can enjoy alcohol in South and nobody can say nothing.

Sudanese in this forum who can share point of view with politeness,i salut you for that and i hope others will follow your path, BUT, i don’t agree with your point that alcohol has no harm as long people don’t abuse it,,i think when people start to drink they don’t have intention to abuse alcohol but gradually they lose concious then lose control.

This evil so-called alcohol has taken a significant number of lives during the movement. As I had been monitor it for so during the war time, it has taken many intellectuals or educated people lives than uneducated people. I hope I truly know the figure, I would have requested that figure to put on civil war of Sudan’s history. Even now over the underdeveloped world, people are dying everybody.

People do use alcohol in excessive way without following the rules of modern time alcohol. Also lacks of works to engage some people often let them drink alcohol in daily basis without time off. Even some just drink alcohol as substitutes of food. It might sound good there but alcohol becomes danger when it is being used as plain food to fills stomach. I hope they respect the rule from Commissione

Alcohol shouldNOT be banned for marriage’s ceremony except ’FUNERAL’ but with restrictions in all its consumption. Becos alcohol dont means harm but for physical stimulus that gives somebody reason for acting in a specific way of one’s lifestle socially. This is the best for arousing interest during ceremony, folks!!

I think taking those majors may damatically change the culture of purchasing liquor for publics performatives which thereof result in violent and even public nursance. exploitation of victims’ wealths is unacceptable in that manner i strongly recommend. putting more effort on tightening some restrict rules will eventually shape that exercising and operation.
