September 16, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – Sudanese authorities have banned the video-sharing website Youtube in what appears to be an attempt to prevent people from watching an anti-Islam film that has been sparking protests across the Muslim world.
Several sources confirmed to Sudan Tribune that access to Youtube in Sudan has been blocked since Sunday by the country’s National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) which, according to its website, has the power to filter "hazardous" internet content.
No official media outlet reported the blockade but some people interviewed by Sudan Tribune believe it is an attempt to stop people from watching “Innocence of Muslims” an internet amateur film mocking Islam’s Prophet Mohammed.
The film, which was made in the U.S., already sparked popular outrage and concomitant protests outside US diplomatic missions across the Middle East.
In Sudan, two people died and dozens sustained injuries during demonstrations against the film outside the US embassy in the capital Khartoum on Friday.
