August 31, 2012 (WASHINGTON) – The United Nations has attempted minimized the importance of a meeting between Sudanese president Omer Al-Bashir and the UN Secretary general Ban Ki-moon in Tehran.

Sudan’s foreign minister Ali Karti said Thursday that Ban Ki-moon discussed with Al-Bashir the unresolved issues Sudan has with newly independent South Sudan including the the map drawn by the African Union to establish a buffer zone along their shared international border.

But Farhan Haq, UN secretary-general associate spokesperson, on Friday told reporters that it was just a "brief greeting" on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Movement conference in the Iranian capital.

Asked whether the Secretary-General had met with Sudanese President Omer Al-Bashir while in Iran, the Spokesperson said that "they had a brief greeting and handshake."

Sudan’s Darfur region has the largest United Nations peacekeeping mission in the world, UNAMID, but Ban Ki-moon an many other UN and western officials normally seek to avoid meeting the Sudanese president at international events since Bashir’s indictments by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against the humanity in 2009 and the genocide in 2010.

Khartoum is not a state party to the ICC, but the United Nations Security Council referred the case of Darfur in 2005 to the war crimes court following the death of 300,000 people in a counter insurgency campaign organised by the government Army and its allied militias.

I know our govnt always used to twist facts ,ICC is the UN’ s arm for justice to prosecute criminalslike Albashir, its the same Normberg tribunal court that prosecuted the NAZI ,who knows may be the S. General tried to convence him to surrender voluntarly so he can get a lesser sentence !

it’s a matter of balance the UN officials need to maintain ties with strife ridden country like Sudan, meantime averting the media critics over any relations with such dirty people..
However, this lil shake-hands will degrade the venerated image of Mr.mon, and he knows that very well yet i guess he couldn’t go around it

So called Mahgoub! " ICC is the UN’s arm for justice!" Do you really mean justice?! Justice is a very big word. It does not exist in the international relationship! When you say justice it means that all parties are equal. How could US send somebody to a court where it does not abide by its laws and accept it’s jursidiction. You say " our government" .It is not " yours".Try another trick!

The US didn’t refer Albashir to ICC but the UNSC did ,but u might be aware that it cotributed a big portion annually to finance the UN budget ,I said our govnt actually its shameful to a pres. like Albashir for my country - u can’t deny me a citizenship after u did with my basic humanrights-

UN must not take side. There are two things which suppose to be done.
      1. sunction lift on Sudan.
      2. ICC. which can not allow Bashir to attend any summit.

i don’t agree with, obviously if the UN policy wont be lenient it wont accomplish any progress in the world, they have to deal with criminals to save the victims of them, and that by no means an excuse to give criminal impunity.
every process goes on its own course peacekeepers do their job and ICC do its

stop making up lies about bashir, bombings only happen in South Kordofan where we target rebels and unfortunately, these bombs may hit civilians as well. just like USA bombing afghanistan targetting terrorists where 100’s of thousands died. Darfur is in peace now, starting to develop same as BN. people in these areas support bashir and genocide is a lie by icc and insects!

Wondering how u defend a criminal like Albashir ,when he confessed of the killing ,but he admitted only 10,000 not 300,000! Unless ur a hired attorney ,Idont think if the USA kill some civilians that doesn’t give u permission to kill ur own ppl ,anyway they didn’t kill own ppl they killed their enemies ,in WW II they prosecuted the NAZI not for bombing London but for the German Jews.

        M Ali,
We are all not behind Bashir- in fact the only people I know who support him are the blind NCP supporters- who of course benefit from his patronage.
Don’t come on here and claim to speak for all Sudanese because we haven;t given you that right and you only soeak for a small proportion of us
And we are not traitors if we don’t support our despotic President.
