August 14, 2012 (JUBA) - The former commissioner of Warrap state’s Twic county, Dominic Deng Kuic, was found guilty on Tuesday in Warrap civil court of embezzling public funds.
The ex-commissioner was charged with with embezzling money paid by Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Company (GNPOC) intended for the public purse.
Community representative of Ajak Kuac payam [district] of Twic county, John Lal Chol welcomed the verdict.
The court permitted Deng and his dependent, Liai Ater Kuot, collectively or individually 15 days to return all stolen funds and pay SSDG30,000 [US$6,800] in court fees.
This was Deng’s second court appearance. In May he was found guilty of embezzling SSDG524,370 [US$118,300] of public funds from GNPOC.
The Ajak Kuac community has received only SSDG1,745,500 [US$393,870] of the SSDG2,269,920 [US$512,100] owed to them by Deng.
Chol urged the courts across South Sudan to prosecute corrupt government officials.
