Ethiopia-Sudan security cooperation successful, officials

October 3, 2012 (ADDIS ABABA) – Ethiopian and Sudanese military officials said that the ongoing joint security cooperation efforts being exerted by the two neighbors to ensure common peace and security were successful.

The officials were speaking at the seventh Joint Defense Committee meeting of Ethiopia and Sudan held this week in the capital Addis Ababa.

Ethiopian Minister of Defence, Siraj Fagesa and his Sudanese counterpart, Abdel-Rahim Mohamed Hussein and other senior military officials from the two sides took part at the three-day gathering.

According to the officials the joint security cooperation has been fruitful mainly in curbing cross border criminal activities.

Ethiopia and Sudan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Security cooperation two years ago. The defense MoU signed between the two East African countries has a five year life.

After they signed the MoU, the two sides come together every six months to review and evaluate the implementation of the MoU and further exchange shared experiences.

The two sides also consult and design on new and better ways to enhancing security along the common boundary.

Ethiopia’s Chief-of-Staff, General Samora Yenus, and his Sudanese counterpart, General Ali Al-Sherif Al-Tahir was also in attendance of the security meeting.
