European Union Ambassadors visit Jonglei

September 27, 2012 (BOR) – European Union (EU) delegates visited the Jonglei state capital, Bor in order to learn what challenges the state faces.

The head of the delegation, Sven Kuhn Von, who briefed the press after meeting with Governor Kuol Manyang Juuk on Thursday said, “we are interested in learning what are the challenges Jonglei facing at this critical juncture in term of security, stability and development.”

He said they had “a very good briefing,” in which the state’s poor infrastructure, including its inadequate road network, and insecurity were discussed.

The team continued their visit to Pibor to “talk to the County Commissioner [Joshua Konyi Irer] and relevant stakeholders from the different communities and chiefs to find out more about the security situation,” said Von.

Von said the EU “is interested in the facilitation of diversification of the economy for the government to maximize its agricultural potential and to see what we can do to bring good governance, respect for human rights and democratic accountability,” to the state.

State governor, Kuol Manyang Juuk said they were honored by the visit and noted that the security situation in Pibor County, which has been subject to fierce inter-ethnic conflict and a rebellion led by David Yauyau, remains unpredictable.
