South Sudan’s national TV goes off air ahead of broadcast on Heglig’s seizure

April 14, 2012 (JUBA) – South Sudan’s National TV went off air on Friday, failing to broadcast to the young nation that its forces had captured the disputed town of Heglig, which is internationally recognised as being in Sudan’s South Kordofan state.

South Sudanese refer to the area as Panthou and contest that it is in fact in Unity State. South Sudan’s army (SPLA) have occupied the area since Friday after what is described as an air and land assault against Unity State.

South Sudan’s president has resisted international pressure to withdraw and has stated that he will not order the SPLA to retreat unless Khartoum guarantees Heglig will not be used to launch further attacks or UN peacekeepers are deployed there.

However, on Friday the technicians reported an unexpected failure and the news regarding the border clashes was not broadcast.

Technicians working at the station told Sudan Tribune that they experienced a technical problem as they were preparing to show the pictures of the town after it was captured by the SPLA, which included the pictures of hundreds of the dead soldiers of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF).

The technical failure has made some citizens to suspect an act of sabotage.

This is not the first time the TV failed to broadcast important messages. A similar failure to broadcast occurred when the President of the Republic, Salva Kiir Mayardit, was returning from the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, after he met with President Omer Hassan Al Bashir last month.

        Corrector,

I am not a reporter. This is fact because it was northern who said that every Gas Station is not working. Dawg, all arabs have their own problems start from Middle East up to North Africa. No one will lend Sudan a penny at this moment. Saudi Arab will not help Sudan because Sudan is a Iran ally who is enemy to all Sunni Muslims worldwide. As for Syria, it will not help Sudan either.

I would find reports of gas stations not working properly as irrelavent, would have been news if these stations didnt have oil, but the fact that there might be a few that are not working is hardly national news that you take seriously. Second, Arab countries have already shown enthusiasm to supporting sudan, whether economically or socially. Qatar’s recent 2 Billion dollar loan comes to mind.

If SSTV is linked to Egypt then they’re the same Arabs who fight with us! The full investigation needed to truck down those agents of Sudan, they’re not only to shutdown SSTV but also to abolishing South Sudan’s future!

Okay, you have to admit the defeat. I understand that war is school examination. It depend how well you study for it in order to perform well. As for arab friends, there is a difference between a loan & something given free of charge. I don’t have to explain anything to you because you wouldn’t understand my point as you always based ur argument on lies.

      Northern Sudanese,

It’s ironic to call Saudi arab a friend while your government stab them in the back in 1980s when your country sent troops to support Saadam Hussein in order to destabilize Saudi arab. Sudan also stab Syria in the back when Sudan vote to suspend Syria from Arab League. Syria regard Sudan as their ally but their number one foe.

How did TV go off in a time crisis? Who is responsible for that? Does it mean Khartoum is controlling South Sudan’s TV? If it is connected with Khartoum, it will make South to search for the way it should be completely indenpendent from the North.
