Lakes state official convicted of adultery

January 18, 2012 (RUMBEK) - The Rumbek Central county court had sentenced the representative for the Malek constituency of the county in Lakes State parliament, Zechariah Puoric Matuong, to two years imprisonment on charges of child abduction this week.

Puoric was also ordered to pay a seven cow and SSDG1,000 (US$300) fine on charges of adultery under article 32, 28 and 26 of Dinka customary law.

Puoric illegally married and had a child with a woman who was already married to someone else during the second Sudanese civil war.

Under article 28 of Dinka customary law, the adulterant will have the children borne of the illegal wedlock removed, to be raised by their mother’s rightful husband.

Puoric had his immunity from prosecution removed after a request was submitted on 21 December 2011 by the attorney general in the wake of allegations that he had abducted a child from Uganda. Puoric claimed the child was his son.

This is the first civil case to be tried by Lakes state parliament since its establishment in 2005.

According to Dinka customary law,the man should have been stone to death Lake state citizens. This is No immunity when we deal with criminals who break the law intentionally.
Attorney General is a Dinka, judge is a Dinka, victim is a Dinka, and law makers are Dinka.what else can you expect here???The answer is Death penalty is the only result, but the minister got immunity becoz everything is Dinka.

It’s good that people are convicts of what they did. But there is something I don’t understand with Lakes State " customary Law" at first young men were imprisoned for ten years because of impregnated girls. Is this Customary Law more off " commercial"? why is that Criminal Law is not tighten like the Customary one.Of what benefit is it for that a person is killed and a murderer is not trail

it happened this way, don’t call it child Abduction.
the lady deserted her husband in 1990s and Puoric remarried her, they got three children, one is young boy resembled by his father [Puoric matuong] and the rest.

do you think and come to conclusion, this is child abduction. the children are his own blood, the way is open for Hon. to appeal. it is only the lady who made u turn, debate on

      Thanks Mayom,

It is well known in Dinka tribe that if a lady left the first husband and remarried with another man that’s not adultery commission, even if the dowry is refunded back, so the Hon. should not be charged against abduction that’s sound bad meanwhile he is the one who born the child, The lawyers in Lakes should not sentenced people in such cases this common in lakes or Dinka tribe.

People are always amazed of what comes out of Lake State. Two years is very harsh given the fact that the marriage was consensual between the two. Such punishment should only be enforced if the woman was forced against her will.

Shame on lakes state parliament, with your poor media full of academic underage, who always report nonsence. To me this is politically motivated by his Malek constituent people who claim to be politician, when they know nothing about politics. mostly their illitrate politician called Mangar Matoch, currently the commissioner of state Hqrs is the one behind the move inorder to occupy the seat.

Wonderful, why convicted while in parliament? Puoric has been here for years and no case openned, may be politically motivated. The boy is not a child, he is 21 years, why do you called him a child? Are you sure the boy will follow the so called customary law and leaves his biological father? why wasting time, brovo Puoric pay the fine and your son will follow you home.

It is in human to declare the blood children of Mr Puoric some ones. This is the time the realities of negative customs and cultural practices will start pinching police makers directly so that the can alter and retain on positive ones.

This is really fanny but what to do. Our role as civil society members is to push for changes in such executions and negative customary laws.

            Mr. Dam Musa,

They need to check for DNA before he claimed this young man has own son. You don’t know if he is the biological father. Don’t assume ...

The government need to test children in the Murlie community by using DNA to match them with the parents. If DNA does not match, that family should be jail for kidnapping.

              comrade Elijah,
come to Rumbek in Person, the appearance of that young man with his father does not need NDA Testing.

he was staying with his father all these years, father [puoric] is the one who is schooling him in Uganda.

              this is political move.
