Oldest and longest serving Nuer chief dies aged 98

July 5, 2011 (JUBA) – The longest serving chief in South Sudan’s Nuer community has died just days before the region will formally declare independence on July 9.

Born in 1913, Paramount Chief Malual Wuon Kuoth died in Ganyliel town of Panyijiar County in Unity state on Saturday at the age of 98. He was appointed the permanent Paramount Chief of the area by the British colonial administration in 1945 and held the position for 66 years until he died on July 2, 2011.

Kuoth, who also acted as spiritual leader, was known for his peace making among the neighboring Nuer communities in Unity state and with their neighboring Dinka communities in Lakes and Warrap states. In recent years became paralysed and could not walk.

The Vice President of South Sudan, Riek Machar, who is also from the Nuer community flew to Unity state on Tuesday to attend his funeral in Panyijiar County.

Machar also took part in the funeral of Rev. John Gatluok, who died on Monday in Khartoum. The body of the senior pastor and former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of the Sudan, was flown to Unity state and laid to rest on Tuesday in his home county of Leer.

While consoling the mourners, Machar told them that the deceased had already witnessed the independence of the land even if they have not reached July 9.

He said independence of South Sudan was already achieved by the vote of the people of South Sudan in the self-determination’s referendum in January and that those who died after they had voted had already reached the day of freedom.

He urged the mourners to continue to prepare for the independence celebrations on Saturday, July 9.

    May his soul rest in peace, since he was a spiritual leaders and permanent paramount chief people should worry themselves to mourned too much. I may appeal to his sons and daughters to inherit his legacy and go on as his late father did.

    Malual Wuon was a dinka from Lake State but at the time of British,he was appointed to rule Nuer in Payiniyar that border Lake state. This Leader was from Yirol but because he rules Nuer with respect and without any discrimination. He did his part. May God rest his sold peacefully. Thanks

    george bol, ya they also say john garang was a latuka and salva kiir’s father from darfur. now you say malual wuon kuoth is a dinka. is it because he did not ask for retaliation by youth to recover his stolen cattle by dinka? so when you are forgiven for your sins you think those who forgive you are dinkas. and god of heaven must be a dinka in this case.

    May God rest his soul in peace! Truthteller, it’s not a Dinkas culture to praise death as you put it. In Dinka culture, they teach kids how to respect other people especially older people and strangers. All Nuer leaders don’t know what is wrong and what’s good. Most Nuer leaders such as Riak & Matip are back stabbers, but those chiefs of yours never ask them to stop if they were peacemakers.

    God Bless your soul and May you please Rest in Peace; I am only angry that you died before seeing the birth of your child. I hope you will forgive my ignorance and conceded the fact that you have seen so much pain and suffering from your children and you have endured it the suffering yourself; you perfect it yourself; unlike others who died so young in vain. You will always be the pillar among pillars of our faith and determination in these struggles.
    We keep’s on praying;
