Lakes state governor promise zero tolerance in state ahead of Independence Day celebrations

June 30, 2011 (JUBA) – The Governor of Lakes State, Chol Tong Mayay, has said he will enforce a zero tolerance policy to crime in the state both in cattle camps and to road side robberies and confirmed that the Government of South Sudan (GOSS) will deploy armed forces and other organised forces all over the state in a press conference in Juba on Wednesday.

Tong said that he was in Juba for an official visit where he met President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir, to discuss issues related to insecurity in Lakes state. He explained that he had requested that the president send troops to Lakes state to deal with security issues. Tong said the deployment will be realised in the next one or two days.

While in Juba, Tong also met with the GoSS Minister of Finance and the Minister of Information and discussed issues related to the celebration of independence.

“My visit to Juba was an official visit to go and meet the president, his excellency, Salva Kiir Mayardit, we met and the issues we discussed are issues related to security in Lakes state internal and external with Unity state – I requested the deployment of the army – there are national security forces coming to Lakes state to reinforce the army. I have also met the minister of finance and minister of information to discuss our celebration”, said Tong.

Tong urged the citizens of Lakes state to maintain calm and peaceful ahead of the independence day celebrations on 9 July.

The South Sudanese voted overwhelmingly in favour of secession in a plebiscite held in January 2011, as stipulated by the peace agreement signed with North Sudan, signed in 2005, ending more than two decades of civil war.

“My message to the people here is that please let us be calm and peaceful during the celebration – as we are only left with nine days, taking the life of your brother or your sister to denie him or her to see that long awaited day is unlawful and sinful – the whole international community is showing us – as a government we will not allow disturbances to take place from now onward”, said Tong.

The Lakes state, minister of local government and law enforcement agents, Mabor Mayen Wol, speaking on behalf of the State Spokesperson, told the local media outside the Governor’s office that there are changes coming with the celebration of independence, focusing on the new currency for South Sudan.

Wol said that the new currency will have an impact on the citizens, with an immediate rise in prices of goods in the market, adding that the flow of goods from North Sudan will also be affected and new terms of trade which will have to be established between the two nations.

He encouraged Lakes State citizens to face the upcoming difficulties with a sense of pride since these challenges are part and parcel of the struggle towards real independence and self reliance.

    Governor.

I think if you really make what u said with the president regarding the lake state insecurity you can succeed.
Make workshop to all chiefs,Youth, elders and all the stake holders, that the new law is going to be like this.

Since our state is now term as a dangerous state to be in africa and third to pakistan, and Iraqi,we need to do some thing before more women and children are killed and looting on the main roads.

The problem is like this your excellency, the moment this army is brought to take care of the security, the army will start doing other things like raping, looting public giving guns to their relatives and munnition.

When U bring outside army the sons and daughters of the area said, why are you doing this to people of Rumbek.
tell them so that the decision will come from them and tomorrow nobody claimed to have been mistreated.

GOOD STARTS GOVERNOR MAYAY, WAS ALL THE GOVERNORS IN THAT MEETING OR WAS IT ONLY YOU? I THINK WE, THE SOUTHERNERS NEED STRONG SECURITY INCLUDE WARRAP STATE SINCE NUER MILITIAS TRIED TO TAKE OVER TURALEI LAST WEEK. THEREFORE,ALL THE STATES NEED “ZERO TOLERANCE” STOP THOSE GREEDY PEOPLE FROM TERRORIZING PEOPLE. WE NEED TO LIVE IN PEACE AFTER THE INDEPENDENT DAY AND FOREVER. I PERSONALLY, LIKE YOUR IDEA OF SENDING SOLDIERS IN THE LAKE STATE TO CALM DOWN THE SITUATION. PEOPLE NEED TO LEARN FROM ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY. I THINK ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY IS THE SOLUTION TO OUR SOUTHERN SUDAN PROBLEMS.

Do you think,Mr.Governor is going to implement,”zero tolerance”I think he is going to spoilt the security in Lake state by SPLA forces and security forces,we want police forces only for celebration day, dispaching SPLA forces on this state, like creating insecurity in lake State, let police do their jobs, for security of the civilians during the day of celebration, encourage insecurity is not good,SPLA forces are not neutral army, they are looters and robbers, they are not good for citezens’protection.

Thanks, governers of Lakes State, we ripes what our people struggle and it had taken 2 and half millions people life. who laught on this issues to continue expecting other race for civilan to ran, please!to live on others robber life and sivives on blame is not fair. could u be honesty and kind to practice the words that produce “no tolarance”, SPLA/M fought for 21yrs,for same rules, SPLA FOUGHT FOR HIS RULES AND LAWS, the same can be applied to stop those arguement which are against civilan life.Also,SPLA/M should not be quick to decromacy as subject. the most importan things is SPLA/M principal and laws,if so, they will be train on some democrate principal, why? our people will learn by saying it’s democracy let make this change and this, then dispute will start and democray will not stop just laught at you and said “u see”!

I think this is a good idea from the governor to feed the unthinking president of what is happening in the states since he is busy here in juba with ladies, whisky and red level, but this should not be a single state to have military deployment, almost all states have the same problem, LRA in equatoria, cattle raiding any where in states that have pastoralists, rebels against the government killing innocent civilians.

therefore, mr.governor if this is a presidency and not chiefdom that is only concentrating on clans and tribes tell the presidency to see beyond his nose.

hope you don’t think like the president too or else it is blow from the unlucky citizens who have only this wrong leaders.

    Mr. Kon

Have you ever heard that governor has killed a person in Lakes State? What make you think that he is going to spoil security instead of improving it? Insecurity does not come from nowhere but it come from the people like you who are against the government with no reasons.
What is the different between SPLA and police forces since they are under control of the same government.
When people kills themselves, you blame the governor and when he demand forces to keep law and order you blame the governor. What could be the solution here? To take people to the zoo?
