Eritrea accuses Ethiopia, Sudan of fomenting “terrorist attacks”

ASMARA, May 26, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — The Ethiopian regime and the government of Sudan jointly planned to carry out terrorist attacks in various parts of Gash Barka Region in western Eritrea, with the intention of disrupting the 13th anniversary of independence by mobilizing renowned terrorists, the Eritrean radio reported.

However, all their plans, with exception of the terrorist attack that took place in Barentu town, were foiled by Eritrean security personnel before they could be carried out, news received from the area says.

According to the report, out of the terrorists, who were recruited by the Ethiopian regime and the Sudanese government to carry out a massive terrorist operation in Eritrea, some were killed and others captured.

In a statement regarding the incident, a senior government official said the Ethiopian regime and the Sudanese government had been trying continuously to disrupt the prevailing peace and stability in Eritrea by training and arming various terrorist groups and mobilizing them to Eritrea to carry out terrorist activities.

He said it was unfortunate to see such renowned terrorist governments as members of the global coalition against terrorism. He said their membership in the global coalition would reduce the dignity of and respect for the coalition, and encourage the terrorists.

The official reiterated that Eritrea would continue its struggle against terrorism with even greater determination.
