South Sudan 2011 taskforce approves proposed national anthem

March 18, 2011 (JUBA) – The Southern Sudan 2011 Taskforce, which is charged with the responsibility to prepare the South Sudan government for post-independence governance, on Thursday approved the proposed national anthem for the emerging independent state after lengthy discussions.

This is in preparation for the anticipated independence of South Sudan by July 9, following its people’s overwhelming vote for independence in January’s referendum.

The initial national anthem has undergone several amendments and removal from it some words and wordings, among which included the word ‘Cush’ which appeared in its initial presentation and had to be replaced with ‘South Sudan.’

Different sections of South Sudan society including the public contributed to the changes in the proposed anthem. The process to select and finalise the anthem has been ongoing for the last year and a half.

In the taskforce meeting on Thursday chaired by the Vice President, Riek Machar, the proposed national anthem was presented in its fifth revision by the chairman of the committee, Joseph Abuk, assisted by Brigadier General Malaak Ayuen, of the SPLA information department.

The anthem was sung by over 70 students of the University of Juba while the tune was played by the SPLA band.

The fourth revision of the proposed national anthem was presented last week to the council of ministers which referred it back to the committee with more recommended amendments. Machar said the fifth revision of the anthem will be presented to the cabinet next week for approval.

Below is the script of the fifth revision which was approved by the taskforce and will be presented to the council of ministers for further approval:

South Sudan!

Oh God!

We praise and glorify you
For your grace on South Sudan
The land of great abundance
Uphold us united in peace and harmony

Oh motherland!

Arise! Raise your flag with the guiding star
And sing songs of freedom with joy
For peace, justice and liberty
Shall forever more reign

Oh great warriors!

Let us stand up in silence and respect
Saluting our martyrs whose blood
Cemented our national foundation
We vow to protect our nation

So Lord, bless South Sudan!

OR "The great Professor from South Sudan, Joseph Abuk has contributed alot to the anthem"

Girl, it is time to stop tribal mentality since the anthem is calling for unity among southerners. The professor is not there doing it for his tribe.

The team needs to include "EQUALITY" in the above line, so that the it reads "For peace, justice, Equality and liberty Shall forever more reign. This is to make sure that nobody is above the law.

If someone steals money, then they can be taken to court like anybody else.

Ahmed Chol, Whatever that begins in anger, ends in shame

The National anthem that we want & will feel comfortable with, should be written by the hands that never murdered any of the martyers mentioned in above mentioned Anthem. You want to tell us that ,you kill them & then pretend to remember them. There is hell for killers in heaven, why pretend to forgive them on earth.

The flag of our SPLM/A is our soul and strength( Mou Atak).

We brought this flag to the South Sudan for our strength and sacrifices.

This National Anthem has been the dedication and hard work of the SPLM/A and there will must enjoy it together even those who stabbed SPLM/A at the back during the South-North war.

Not every man fight but event man eat;therefore, we really welcome food lovers and militia to enjoy our work( SPLM/A).

God will reward the works of my people for ever Amen.

In The Name Of The Trinity God Amen.
        There is time for everythings,
        time for rebellion,
        time for griefs,
        time for joy,
        time for fight,
time for freedom & there is time for changes from stone age & primitive IDEOLOGIES to economic, social, political and cultural transformation or diversity. You know what make me say all these is that some of our south Sudanese within their communities are still carrying long long ago mentality which is totally helpless in the development of south Sudan. You see,you woke up every morning & rush to your misleading laptop and start making tribal comments historical boy is one of them. Do you think you will change anymore? No my friend, you’ll not change your mind to social development and let me tell you there, face the nation positively thereafter benefit for your personal interest. If you don’t want to contribute to the development of south Sudan please zip up your mouth and stay at home. Thank.
So Lord, bless south Sudan in the eyes of our enemies.
