Sudan activists rally in New York: urgent actions in Abyei, Darfur needed

By Julius N. Uma

April 10, 2011 (JUBA) – Several human rights activists on Friday took to the streets of New York to rally in advocacy for the international community’s action on issues of Sudan, citing the pending Abyei referendum, the unresolved conflict in Darfur and political repression in the north.

The rally, which was conducted in coordination with Amnesty International was sponsored by seven US-based organisations. These included, the African Center for Justice and Peace Studies , New York City Coalition for Darfur , Brooklyn for Peace, Brooklyn Coalition for Darfur, Ubuntu-students for a world without genocide and Darfur Vigil.

The activists, sources told Sudan Tribune, first gathered at the permanent mission of Chad to the UN and called for the protection of female Darfuri refugees in eastern Chad. Later on, these activists reportedly gathered in front of the Sudan Mission to draw attention to the deteriorating human rights situation inside Sudan.

In the recent past, the situation in Sudan’s oil-producing region of Abyei has rapidly deteriorated, with satellite images showing villages being burnt in a manner similar to events in Darfur. The disputed region was meant to undergo a referendum in January, but the process was marred by disputes over who would head the referendum commission.

Similarly, escalating levels of violence in Sudan’s western region of Darfur have limited the citizens’ access to humanitarian assistance into the region, where prolonged fighting is estimated to have reportedly displaced 100,000 since December.

“At the same time, there is increasing concern about the level of commitment to the mediation process in Doha. There is an urgent need for renewed international attention to the conflict and support for mediation efforts,” partly reads a 7 February communiqué.

Also addressed was the worsening political situation in the country, where these activists argued that pressure on the northern government increased in recent months due to the success of popular revolutions in Egypt and elsewhere, the rising price of basic commodities and the loss of face associated with allowing the south to secede.

The Khartoum-regime, they said, has responded to this pressure by rebuffing opposition calls for a coalition government and carrying out a severe crackdown against student activists and independent journalists.

The rally, according to the organisers, was a wake-up call for the international community, urging them to take urgent action to end these attacks, by ensuring that fundamental human rights, including freedom of speech and the right to political participation, are respected in northern Sudan.

I’m not a fan of these rally anyway, why ? because most of these rally have not beared anything to us since then, therefore,I think it is a time for us to find our own way out of this gimme. That is, literally, must be bullet with bullet, otherwise, it will dragged on for years without any possible end to it.

What the hell are you talking about? if you have nothing to say then it is better to shut up. How many things that we achieved without international community intervention?
if you where a normal person you should have anything to disagreed with this rally in new yark city, Now there is no international community involvement in to Abyei issue and that is why both side the south and the north are far to reach any compromise

These are activities by the pressure groups who do not want the US to normalize it’s relationship with Sudan.I donnot think they are going to change the policy of America, which is dictated mainly by their interest nothing less nothing more.

These demonstrations has nothing to do with Abeyi or Darfur. These problems are in Sudan and should be solved here ; even change of the system should come from inside Sudan and not by the asylum seekers and the “humanterian organisations industry”

The same could be said abut the NCP, everything they do is about their interest and their maintenance of power.

If you know this simple truth, then why you so mad?

You must understand that working for one’s self interest is o.k, provided it does not infringe on the basic human rights of others. That’s the difference between a genuine democratic political party and the corrupt gang called “NCP”.

    Logik,

Are you telling me that the SPLA is your model for geuine democratic party?

NCP is a party which took power through a millitary coup.I will be stupid to deny that! and I am not mad about that.Am mad about those who sell their country and people for foregin agenda for the sake of an asylum visa! I know many who had never been politicians and they turned politicians simply for the sake for an asylum visa. Semms in the west they know the name of the game!

This rally in New York should be a wake up call for the international community. Abyei referendum is still pending. The CPA which is supposed to bring a lasting peace between the South and North has not yet been respected fully. Final touches to accomplish it, are yet to be reached. This wake up call is to genuinely avoid another civil war. Moreover, Darfur issue is just hanging in there. No level of commitments to it.
I personally appreciate the activits of Sudan rally. Because, more pressure is to be mounted in order for the NCP to give up. 22 yeras of their rule are enough to serve their own interests or change lives of the Sudanese people. I don’t think Al-Bashir and the NCP will have a new or fresh ideas to give to the Sudanese people at this stage. It has been just a mess followed by a mess ! ! ! I wonder what sort of ideology is the NCP presenting in order for my brother mohammed ali and the likes to support it. I hope it is not a blind support !
