Garang University students face drinking water shortage

By John Actually

April 3, 2011 (JUBA) – Dr. Garang Memorial University students are facing acute clean water shortage in Juba University while conducting their laboratory work.

Established in 2008 in Jonglei state, the University was formerly a branch of the International University of Moldova (ULIM) before it became a Sudanese owned University. Due to a lack of well-equipped laboratories at the university, science students use the facilities at Juba University.

Student Union leaders complained to their university administration in Bor before leaving for Juba on 28 March. Dean of students, Majok Kelei pledged to provide water for one and half months, but upon their arrival the situation had not been remedied.

Student Union chairperson, Thon Chol told Sudan Tribune that 47 science students conducting laboratory works in Juba, only have access to unfiltered water from the Nile pumped into the tanks for both drinking and bathing.

Thon said this untreated and unfiltered water from the river is unfit for human consumption saying they were cheated by the university administration.
Top officials of Lil Company, responsible for the provision of food to students said they have no mandate to provide drinking water.

Students appealed to Government of South Sudan MPs and Ministers, particularly: humanitarian affairs minister, James Kok Ruei, minister of parliamentary affairs, Makuei Lueth, information minister, Marial Benjamin, interior minister, Gier Chaung Aloung, Philip Thon Leek, Malek Alier, Deng Dau, Deng Tiel Ayuen to help them of what they described as “harsh conditions”.

Every state has its own budget and established adminstration to oversee that budget. You need not to come and start appealing to irrelevance authorities. People should learn!!!

The issue of clean water and sanitation has become a great challenge in all 10 Southern Sudan states. It looks like a simple matter, but a great deal of attention needs to be put on it. My personal sympathy is to those students who have to deal with it.

The question in this regard is: Should we rely on our Government to address it? Or can we as concerned communities explore other ways to address it?

I just feel jubilant whenever I hear the name “Dr. Garang University” in South Sudan. I also want many places to be named after him. I understand there will be Dr. Garang International Airport, Dr. Garang National Stadium, Dr. Garang National Hospital and many more. So you who know what Dr. John Garang did for the sake of your freedom must accept his name to be used. Remember a hero like Dr. Garang never dies.
