February 13, 2011 (JUBA) – The ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in the south has officially adopted South Sudan as a name for the new state whose existence will be formalized on July 9, 2011.

The proposal, which emerged from the meeting of the SPLM’s politburo headed by the SPLM Chairman Salva Kiir, will be tabled before the party’s ranks and southern political forces for approval, SPLM officials said on Saturday.

South Sudan voted overwhelmingly last month in a referendum to secede from the north with which it signed a peace deal in 2005 and ended more than two decades of intermittent civil wars.

Separately, the SPLM has decided to bifurcate itself into two separate entities in north and south Sudan, a day before the region’s breakup with the north is due to be officially pronounced.

Pagan Amum, the SPLM’s secretary-general, told reporters on Sunday that the SPLM had decided to become two independent parties in the north and the south, noting that the disentanglement would be implemented on July 8.

Although a southern liberation movement in embryo, the SPLM’s political program of the “New Sudan” which advocates pluralism and respect for diversity in all of Sudan has attracted many followers in the north, especially among disaffected sectors of the population and leftist groups.

Amum further revealed that the SPLM had decided to charge Malik Aggar, the governor of the Blue Nile State, with the leadership of the SPLM’s in north Sudan while re-appointing Yasir Arman as its secretary-general.

He also told reporters that Abdual Aziz Adam Al-Hilu, the deputy governor of South Kordofan State, had been appointed as deputy SPLM chairman in north Sudan.

Pagan Amum stressed that the SPLM was already registered as a political party in the north and would not need new registration.

Some anti-SPLM groups in northern Sudan led by the northern separatist party Just Peace Forum have been calling for banning the SPLM in north Sudan following the secession of the south.

According to Amum, the SPLM’s politburo had also decided to transfer the elected northern members of its National Liberation Council (NLC), the highest decision-making body in the movement, to form another Liberation Council in North Sudan until the party there organizes a general convention.

Repeated failure to hold planned meetings of the NLC has fueled speculations that the SPLM’s leadership is trying to avoid confrontation with the council’s northern members who are feeling betrayed by the SPLM’s favoring of south Sudan secession.

But SPLM officials contend that the delays are caused by technicalities related to the busy schedule of its officials.

      we can’t use Cush name:

The real word used here is "Kush" or "Cush" in English. Cush was the son of Ham the son of Noah. The name "Cush" is found eight times in the Bible. Six places refer to Cush the son of Ham. One reference in Psalm 7:1 refers to Cush the Benjamite. Isaiah 11:11 uses Cush to refer to a land. The land of Cush may have ended up as Ethiopia, but even if it did, it certainly did not always refer to Ethiopia.
The Cushites appear to have spread along extensive tracts, stretching from the Upper Nile to the Euphrates and Tigris. At an early period there was a stream of migration of Cushites “from Arabia, Babylonia, and Persia, to Ethiopia, properly so called, Cushites
But we are not Cushites people’ instead of Nilotic peoples

At least the idea has brought you a freedom in golden plate. freedom fighter or liberator is rarely the one who cherish the fruits of his deeds. Beside his dependents,it’s always left to the cowards and collobrators to enjoy. I hope history as taught you well.Martin luther King and Gandhi had fought for the freedom of thier people, and at last their people were free after they were gone. If criminals were being honored, i bet you could have seen the statutes of those demised southerns’collobrators in our capital and in other cities around South Sudan. i hope you know who i am talking about , therefore i am not going to name no names.
you have celebrated the CPA for last five years which he brought to you. in addition, you are going to celebrate the upcoming independent which was born out of CPA. Tell me how backward and hypocrite you’r to celebrate the achievements of the person you dubbed to be a criminal and coward as well.

Thank you for enlightening us on the would be name for the young country on the face of this world. Yes, I absolutely agree with the retention of the said name "The republic of South Sudan". Besides, the adoption should take place as you have just said, all political parties in south sudan should be involved in this discussion. I think the SPLM are on the right track.

Yes, those SPLM members who are originally from the North should carry the vision of the SPLM to the North and propagate it there; I am sure they will win the elections in the North if democratic apparatus are genuinely employed in the election system.

i am very surpirse to hear that SPLM is to be aparty in the north sudan if that is the case, than SPLM did not supprt the separatin it’s people of the south who choose to be independent theyuse to pretain to us that they are separatist while they arn’t.

if unity separattion was option than what bering two parties in both south and North ok when people in the North wanted to have theirs own splm in North them it’s up to them , John Garang the Greate man Said sudan will not be same and will never be the same because he know what every we will agreet up on with Arabs would still .that also means SPLM is one amongs the unionist in south sudan and that means the diferrent that was there between ANYANY, AND ANYANYA 2.

Is SPLM the only south sudan party? of course not than why it try to dictate the wise people of mighty southerners all political parties have to said some things about the name of the nation be fr implementation and south sudan with out Republic or Democratic is useless to me, when you take it to international standard there is no silly name like that.

        Dinka D. SPLA and Victory,
Renaming South Sudan to Kush or Nile would have been better for obvious reasons of avoiding being confused with terrorism sponsors in the north at international stage, to avoid people like Joseph Lagu working for re-unification of Sudan; to avoid Arab world sponsoring problems in the South to initiate re-unification of the Sudan. South Sudan name will encourage northerners to migrate to the new country and the Arabs that you left with the north will take South Sudan in the future, probably after 2 centuries after giving birth like rats in the new country.
I support Steven Wondu’s and Chol de Kwot’s arguments on the change of name for the above reasons.
But our senior decision making organs in SPLM had decided to adopt Republic of South Sudan due to SPLM reluctant to change its name to match a new country name and support from Vice President and other Nuer politicians to score few political points as people who fought for South Sudan while others fought for united Sudan.
Let’s use South Sudan for now; many of our people do not listen and understand until they see problems and begin running around like headless chicken looking for solutions to those problems they could have avoided should they had used critical analysis to arrive at their decisions in the first place.
If we need the word Sudan to be used, why use South Sudan when we know there will be no North Sudan? There will only be Republic of the Sudan in the north and therefore, south should use something like Democratic Republic of the Sudan or Federal Republic of the Sudan to claim equal share of the word Sudan.
North Sudan is just an informal reference to Republic of the Sudan.
Like in Koreas - Republic of Korea is the official name for South Korea and Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is the official name for North Korea. Many semi illiterates in South Sudan cite examples of South Korea and North Korea as a good example to base our decision to adopt Republic of South Sudan as official name of the new country, which is completely misleading, South Korea and North Korea are informal differentiation of the Korean countries.
The same is true with German countries before 1990 reunification, German Democratic Republic informally referred to as East Germany and Federal Republic of Germany informally referred to as West Germany.
I accept and respect views of the people who want to use Sudan and my point of concern is why use South Sudan when we know there is no country formally called North Sudan. We can use Democratic Republic of the Sudan or Federal Republic of the Sudan if we must go by the views of the people who want to keep the word Sudan.
We need to think beyond our noises and see things from national lenses not tribal lenses for the betterment of future generations.

          Nlowanda,

you are wrong to say that Joseph Lagu is for re-unification of south sudan with the north. you should read the history of liberation movements in the south before coming to such conclusion. You should read the objectives of anya naya and the cause for the failing of local autonomy. you will come to realised that it is not Lagu who was working for the downfall.

I respect you until today when I see your argument. I hope you don’t mean what you stated. Lagu like any other leader has done some mistakes but he has never been for unity. Otherwise he would have not fought the war for separation if he was one.

          May God bless all.

            Ito,
You are right to argue so but I was quoting that due to his recent call for ‘open door policy’ with the north after referendum results were clear to everyone in the Sudan.
Open door policy means free movement and settlement of citizens between two nations which will allow northerners to move south and settle.
That is where I got that idea from. Anyway, Anya Anya 1 was fought longtime ago and who knows Joseph Lagu might have discovered better parts of Mundukuru during his time with them in Khartoum.

              Nlowanda,
Thank-you very much for your intelligent response, I truly appreciated it. I however wanted to add that the free movement of citizens between the two countries is not an idea of a one person. It is part of the post-independent arrangement which is agreed by parliament of south sudan under the ruling party of the Sudan people liberation movement. Saying that it is Lagu’s idea is vague and does not represent the political originality of the situation on the ground.

We all know that NCP and its peace Partner the SPLM were the ones who crafted this agenda among the many others to be implemented after the independence of south sudan. I would agree with you if you blame the whole leadership of south sudan rather than singling Lagu who only plays his part in the process like any other official in parliament.

May God bless you my brother and Happy Valentine Day.

Some weeks ago I was taken a back, when people of Southern Sudan were debating to change the name of the new emerging nation to be called Nile republic, Cush and some others that had no connection to Southern Sudan.

The Sudan is our identity, regardless whether we in the South had chosen seperation during referundum, we are still Sudanese. Our common bond as Sudanese is our colour and the differences we have in the The Sudan is the poltical ideologists supported by sucessfull regimes in Khartoum.
If we were secular democractic state, then referundum would have resulted affirming unity of The Sudan.

    Dear readers,

Of course the name Republic of South Sudan (RoSS) was approved by the government for a long time as we have been reading it on Sudan Tribune and other websites.

The rest are just mere formalities of confirmation!

As for the SPLM splitting into North and South. This is very obvious. Or what do you think?

The so-called New united Sudan vision has failed its test and the country has split as pursued by separatists.

Congratulations Malik Agar for being the new chairman of the SPLM in the North. You are already registered there in the North. But the SPLM-South (mother SPLM) will have to register again as a new political party in the South as correctly said by Pagan Amum. And also the rest of political parties will register new in the South after independence in July.

My concern is will the North allow the SPLM-North to operate?

As for SPLM-South, I predict that there will be merger of various political parties with SPLM-South that will result to a new name for the new party in the South.

IS WAR IMMINENT IN JONGLEI STATE???

Read the news story below from Bor (Borglobe and Southsudan.net websites).
    ..................................

Sudan: Gabriel Tanginye to hunt for George Athor?

    By Majur Deng Nhial

February 13, 2011 Bor (Borglobe) – the recent attacks on civilians at Fangak town and Door in Jonglei State is the height of concern. State citizens in the violent-stricken counties are accusing the government of Southern Sudan on how it poorly handles the Renegade General George Athor in the latest confrontation between his royal forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army that killed 105 people.

The Bor Globe Network has learnt today from a state official that Gabriel Tanginye (Gatwech Chan) has volunteered himself to hunt up for George Athor who is alleged to have massacred immediate members of his family last Wednesday. “If Athor will not capture me, I will capture him.” The source has quoted. Due to network difficulties, the Bor Globe was unable to reach the Akobo Commissioner Goi Jooyul Yol on his cellular phone Sunday.

Top officials in the governments of Jonglei State and South Sudan who are also members of Nuer ethnic group have also flown into the area of the conflict. Analysts fear that if the government of Southern Sudan does not act swiftly in the brewing development, the issue may turn ugly base on tribal lines.

In October 2010, the President of South Sudan Salva Kiir issued an order given amnesty on Major General Gabriel Tanginye, Lt. General George Athor Deng and Colonel Gatluak Gai. He also urged them to rejoin the rank and file of the SPLA forces and move freely in South Sudan.

However, Lt. General George Athor is dragging his feet to simply join the mainstream government of South Sudan. The negotiating team comprising of religious leaders quoted him as saying that the government should meet his demands or die trying.

George Athor picked up arms and went to the bush after losing Jonglei state governorship race in last April’s election, claiming they were badly rigged in favor of the incumbent Kuol Manyang Juuk, who sought election into the seat on the SPLM ticket.

    ................................

However, it is an exaggerated note that ’top’ Nuer leaders have flown to the area of Fangak. What I heard is that those leaders from the area, such as James Kok Ruee and Gabriel Tanginya have visited the area.

And of course if those Kuol Manyang and Gier Chuang do not want peace in Jonglei, then the end result of very obvious; destruction in Jonglei.

Salva Kiir should act immediately in order to neutralize the situation.

Tanginye killed George Athor which will turned into tribal fighting. instead of focusing on Kuol Manyany & Gier Chuang.

The only people Garang & Now Kuol Manyang have used succesfuly
to eliminate their enemies are Gaawar, Laak in Central Nuer and Adok Nuer in Western Nuer. I.e William Nyuon & Kulang Puot, for Killing Gai Tut & William Abdalla Chuol respectively..
Gatdet Yaka & Now may be Tanginye? what’s wrong with my Nuer people being used like that? for Killing Kerubino Kuanyin Bol & Now may be Athor by Tanginye?

The only people that haven’t been succesfully used are Lou & Eastern Jikany Nuer. because we know the dirty tricks of those people. May If Kerubino was still alive today we wouldn’t have Salva Kiir doing this corruption and all malpractice...And when you killed Athor,... Kuol Manyang & Gier Chuang would still be alive and planning their next move against Nuer..do you see that? where is the intelligent people in our community to see this conspiracy?
I would be supportive if you eliminate all of them or else leave the problem among themselves.. as long as they stay away from Nuer areas.

I am one of those who would’ve preferred a new name (not Kush or Nile). I suggested Anyanya but my brothers laughed at me. My reasons for new name are the same as others’: a clean break from the old Sudan, a new identity, a new course.

If we don’t we’ll always be the second-class Sudanese, whether we have our own country or not. I might be wrong but I think those who cling to "South Sudan" are indeed clinging to "Sudan". In which case why are we playing these psychological games? we could also call ourself "Republic of Sudan" and fight for the ownership of the name. But we’re cowards, we’re picking the comfortable way out.

Don’t think the problem is solved, for now it is but more will come. My biggest prediction (and I’m not the only one to suggest this) is a unionist movement, it’ll take time but it’s inevitable as long as we’re linked.

    South Sudanese

Renaming South Sudan to Kush or Nile or another better name would have been better for obvious reasons of avoiding being confused with terrorism sponsors in the north at international stage, to avoid people like Joseph Lagu working for re-unification of Sudan; to avoid Arab world sponsoring problems in the South to initiate re-unification of the Sudan.

Whats I see here arer just bunch of haters who are scared to face others, or directly talk instead use the internet cowardly to express their ill intentions and feeling toward other people(I will try as much as possible to avoid the TRIBE name since it sounds irresponsible to use it)

Me A sudanese and to be UNKNOWN, believe that empty barrels make too much noise but when left in the rain it will rust and the noise will reduce and this is what i see here.. Many empty barrels.

Good luck with your unconstructive comments.. I mean some really know what they are write but the rest please go and learn how to talk but not how to write and speak englis.....Im sure more than half of you who are writing here went to Comboni Majaneen thats why you are not deciplined....If you guys went to proper school you would have known the value of respecting other’s opinion and just stick to your own opinion.

The rule is simple "TAKE WHAT MAKES SENSE and LEAVE WHAT MAKES NONSENSE"

Let walk smartly for our New Nation, Name is nto of importance but dignity will bring Name, we can name it John Deng, Bor, Malakal or Even Medeni, but with out Identity its just trash... So lets not make our country a trash.

    Peace

Independent of Southern Sudan was what southern sudanese were fighting for,but was hijacked by self-centered Garang. No change to its name and anything hijacked from southern sudanese must come back. Independent of south sudan is back, very soon SPLM will be regustered as a new party with a new name, SPLA will not be called SPLA but somthing else. simple and to the point.
