Industrialised fishing in Unity state within two years

By Bonifacio Taban Kuich,

August 19, 2010 (BENTIU) – The Government of Southern Sudan has sent a delegation to Unity state to set up a fisheries resources project, which will introduce industrialised fisheries to the region.

The projects is funded by the Multi Donor Trust Fund (MDTF) in collaboration with Unity state’s Ministry of Animals resources and Fisheries.

Similar projects have been implemented in four eastern states and among some of southern Sudan’s ten states.

Samuel Lony Geng, state Minister for Animal resources and Fisheries in Unity State, told Sudan Tribune he appreciated delegation’s visit.

Geng said that fisheries were a major resource for Unity state, which is also host to many of Sudan’s oil fields.

The Minister, said fishing was underutilized due to lack of skills and conservation.

Geng said that some fishermen lacked equipment and use traditional methods which do not catch a high quantity of fish.

As part of the scheme, to create industrialized fisheries in southern Sudan, specialist training will be held in Juba and Rumbek in October and November.
