Another veteran senior army officer joins Independent candidate Gen. Athor

May 3, 2010 (JUBA) – A veteran senior officer in the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) is reported to have joined the former army deputy chief of staff who has carried out deadly attack against the SPLA forces.

Brig. General John Jok Gai has reportedly joined Gen. George Athor Deng, who turned violent after losing the Jonglei state’s gubernatorial race to the incumbent governor, Kuol Manyang Juuk.

Brig. Gen. John Jok was a popular army officer during the formation of the SPLM/A in 1983 in Itang, Ethiopia, and was the officer in charge of the police stations in the residential area which accommodated most of the SPLM/A senior officers in 1980s.

He is the first Brig. General to be named after the Government of Southern Sudan’s statements suspecting about seven Brig. Generals who have sided with Gen. George Athor.

Other generals are suspected to be mostly from Gen. Athor’s home area and have a coordination in many areas in Jonglei state.
Brig. Gen. John Jok was recently deployed in Wau, Western Bahr el-Ghazal as deputy in charge of the police force in the state.

He was also the former Commissioner of Nyirol County of Jonglei state and was removed by a presidential decree two years ago.
His family members told Sudan Tribune that they have confirmed that he is no where to be known. He has since two weeks ago cut off his phone lines.

Wild spread rumors in Bor town talk of Gen. George Athor warning the town residents to leave the town until May 8 dateline, or face the consequences of his imminent attacks.

He is also reported to have recruited former SPLA unconfirmed officers and foot soldiers on his side and already promoted some of them.

Gen. Athor possesses a number of pick up trucks and ammunition depots, according to security sources, who said the number of his forces could have now reached about nearly a thousand.

His exact location is not known as of now since his withdrawal from his home town, Khorfulus. Military analysts say his recent denial on phones about his innocent on the Doleib attacks was just a maneuvering tactic.

    Dear readers,
George Athor has the right to fight incumbent governor as he was only in favor by NEC and SPLM political Bureau. I would like to encourage others to join George Athor since he is claiming his rights and want to governs his citizens. Go a head George Athor and we are planning another attack in Unity State - Bentiu. God bless you for being braved.

Thank to John Jok for backing up his colleague George Athor since South Sudan government believes on destroyers not the populars people.

        Forget About what went wrong:

        Let’s think about the solutions.

there are two kinds of solutions here:
        a) none-violent i.e talking
        b) violent i.e bombing and bullets

By Non-violent, we can talk and find the most appropriate solution to our problems. There will be no loss of lives, Through that all sides win. This was true in the between Khartoum and SPLA.

The second option is always difficult to bear fruits. There will be loss of lives. It is possible that lots of soldiers from both sides can die. It is also possible that George Athor can die like Karibino, Nyuon, Akuot Atem, Gai Tut and Arok Thon without achieving what he wants. He should think twice about what he is doing for the sake of southerners.

With all the military vehicles he has now, there is no doubt that the Arab is behind him.

Dengka, do you think if you use the name Dengka does it make you to be believed as a Dinka?

It’s obvious when you try hard to what you are not.
Little that you know, the people that you’re encouraging to fight, you’re throwing them into a fire and will just end up lifeless.

You should be going somewhere to incite violent not here on the net, you are targeting the wrong audience and you seems uninformed enough to see that.

These are all lies. Gen. George Athor is simply too sophisticated to be attacking a small barrack in Khorfulus. He is highly trained and probably one of the most respected generals in the SPLA. The idea that he would launch attack at the outpost is simply too inconvenient. He would have launched his attack in Bor or Juba if he indeed had any idea of doing so.

The SPLM is now totally deformed to be reformed and is now creating malicious incidents as a pretext to curtail the freedom of those who brought freedom like Gen. Athor. The low-ranking officers like Brigs are probably some of those who speaks favorably of the good general and are being targeted for that reason. Some of these Brigs are his former staff members who can clearly express their surprise at these malicious attempts by the gogrial elements in Kiir administration to target those they perceive to be a threat to their corrupt administration.

You are saying the fact. Here is what I want to add. The SPLA will make the attack by Athor happen even when it was not suppose to happen. As long as Athor hears of SPLA malicious planning or evil talks of him, Athor will be in preparation to defend or attack too before he is attack. The SPLA better leave George Athor alone, talk good of him so that he feels secure in his whereabouts and find a room to come back to spla.

I am affraid most of our people are good in fuelling problems with their unfounded claims. These people are blind-followers who don’t question SPLM’s leadership while remaining SPLM. SPLM too is becoming so ignorant that instead of becoming a listening party it is using dictative methods that only encourage run-aways. I advice SPLM to evaluate its ways of solving problems, it is not to resort to power but non-violent methods. If SPLM threatens it will encourage more of its enemies instead of friends.

Ok, blind supporter, Murlescrewed or whatever nonsense name you identity yourself, who do think might be behind the attack? You are denying what the attackers who were captured admitted that they were ordered by General George Athor and he himself confirmed that. A dullard person like you can’t even distinguish between the SPLA and SPLM. The attackers and attacked are all SPLA, not SPLM.
Imitating Dr. John’s phrase he used to use to describe successful Arab regimes of that time in Khartoum cannot help your self-ego general to achieve what he wants. If the SPLM is "too deformed to be reformed", then what are you doing behind the computer screen? Come out to the field and remove SPLM. You don’t even understand what does the quote, "totally deformed to reformed" is used for what ends. Basically, it means to remove SPLM by military force. Do you have that ability my dear shallow minded vulture? You and your uncle orchestrating this crime will be farting blood soon.

I don’t even understand what freedom you talk about that SPLM wants to curtail. Are you free yet from Arab grip and selfishness to demand freedom from SPLM? If you want freedom, why then your mind retarded uncle attack the forces he once commanded as deputy of General Staff for Moral Orientation? I don’t think his mind is free such that to rule the most populated and multi-ethnic state like Junglei.

Use your brain to get in depth motives behind this incident instead of blindly supporting him, or is it because the disgruntled general is from your home area? Tribalism is the cancer eating and mutating us in south Sudan, rendering us even to forget our common interests as one people with a common cause. Shame to general George Athor Deng and those who support him. I don’t wish you harm for this barbaric inhumane crime. I pray they spare your life and live to be tormented by this evil action of yours.
Remember, one good action can erase all bad ones one commits and slight bad action undo all the good things you did. you were a good fighter and commander during the war, but this recent move has left spotty marks on you for the rest of your life.

Dengka. Please you are not supposed to support a suicidal activities, i don’t think this group of local army will succeed at their military operations, while south Sudan is a government even if they refuge to North government they will hundred percent loose. the better thing was suppose to do is to urge General George Author to surrender to the authority in Juba.

I condemn any means of urging this group of military for a suicidal operations, and i am sure they will loose too much if they continue in their process of their tribal interest, as all of you know a qualification of being political is not carrying out any army activities for the loose of some one, that is why political Bureau didn’t select him for his lack of politic, and if he was selected to governorship how would he handle political problems, i am not from Jonglie state but a southerner who can see things in angle of our nation’s future and interest.

Yes, i believe George Author is a great fighter but he is going erase his fruit of two decade struggle in one day by the name of wanting leadership, and if he think that he is a great fighter and he will not be defeated, he is lying for himself nobody could defeat the formed government at all, George Author and his followers will regret too much.

Just listen yourself Dengka. You are supporting George probably because he is your tribesman or something but I am sure if you have a little of logical thinking you should know that real leaders who care about their people do not take arms when they lose an election. That is unacceptable. Let George waite for the next term and he may win the election. Kuol Manyang is not going to be the Governor of Jonglei forever; he will simply serve his term and run again for reelection.

All I know is that these "armed politicians" of Southern Sudan find it hard to accept defeat but the Generals should learn to act in the best interest of the people they wish to lead. They should realise that this is a political process whereby the people decide who will lead them.

Now General George Athor wants to go shoot the very people he wished that they should have voted for him. Isn’t that crazy? How is the "General" going lead when women and children will be displaced? How will the General lead when the peasants will not be able to cultivate the land to feed their families? How will he lead when children will be dying of malaria while hiding with their parents in the bush; fleeing from the General’s forces?

Have the General counted what the results of his act will be? Have the General learned from other countries of how democracy is conducted? Have the General not learn from the last 21 years war? Does the General really have the interest of the people of Jonglei in his heart or is he just thinking of himself?

Dengka, don’t support anyone who is bringing destruction to this country. What we need in South Sudan now is more development not bombardment. We need more hospitals, schools, clinics, good roads, farming and business with other countries. We need brave Generals who will defend the cities of South Sudan not those who will attack the very cities that need them for protection. We need strong young men who will protect their country not those will be used to kill their own people.

I have a respects for Gen. Athor. He was a great fighter during our 22 years of struggle. But I condemns this inccident with strong term if he is really involved.

There is a guys who comments on this site that, he is happy because Gen. Athor is Dinka. But what he meant is that you can’t be freedom fighrers and destructors at the same time.

that is disturbing news and unfortunate for the south. at the beginning i thought that may be the incident was small scale and can be solve easily but it seems that it has larger dimensions.

if a number of SPLA Generals joined LT general George Athor Deng as exemplified by this report to start a rebellion and a fight escalated ,no one in the south could be blamed except Kiir Mayardit and his colleges in the political bureau because they were the ones who messed avery systematic democracy to a dictatorship practice by handle picking those they favor while leaving out those who were selected by the electoral colleague and the constituents who were very popular.

in addition, during the election, the party acted rather foolishly by treating the independent candidates as enemies and intimidate them, and eventually, rigged the results in favor of those unpopular candidates and now we have a looming war due to that foolishness.

mr Gat nyaran, as per political bureau is the highest organ of the splm and can take decision without intimidation.however, independents candidates were given the opportunity to participate in the election and be elected like any other splm candidates.but all invain. they have not been voted highly and therefore lost.it is not splm political Bureau now.government of southern sudan is six years now since its formation 2005 and have not yet met the elections norms and elections procedure. they would have done these, they could subject all candidates in various consituencies to prelimninary election in order to have one candidate for splm ticket for various seats. i know still even if it would have been done, this culture of primivity and that we don’t accept the defeat would have still exist.

I know that political bureau is the highest body which make decision in the party.
in the other hand you seem to be eluded by two facts
        1) the independent candidates were not mere outsiders but well known leaders in the party, but because of some grudges inside the PB, they were denied their rightful nomination.
        2) Democracy is not a partial process if you want to execute it, it mean that, those who want to govern must be selected by the people and that was embodied in the electoral colleges. the names of those who were seen to be best fit to represent the people were forwarded but the political bureau have their say and they imposed unpopular candidates who were rejected by the people.

you can say that the GOSS was just started and have no experience of democracy because most of those government officials had their education in UK,US, or in Europe, they know best what is democracy and they are more than capable of executing it.

if those independent candidates were not denied their nominations, intimidated during the elections, and their victory being denied, we could not have crisis such as this at hand in the moment.

Kiir and Political Bureau are not to be blame, otherwise, you compromise to those who push because they think of themselves only and not those others think for. It cannot work. A party knows the potentials of its members and when they were chosen, it was not because they are better than those who were not, but because of experience and merits. Kiir cannot over-rule the decision of the PB. caving to such people because they are arrogant is not logic in political process, and is itself corruption or bribing. He decided to compete as an independent and left his party and military position, simply for governorship position. Would blame Kiir that? He lost election. Would you blame Kiir who was himself running in election for that. Who announced that Kuol Manyang won, Kiir or NEC?
People, your hate for Kiir and SPLM will not do you any benefit. Even if someone died of malaria or any cause, you would blame that on Kiir and SPLM. This is not logic at all by any common sense. You would only get stuck and not progress simply for your hatred to Kiir and SPLM. Kiir had come a long way to this end for love and determination to liberate us before I and you were born. It’s the biggest credit we are obliged to give him regardless of some shortcomings he has.

If you don’t want Kiir and SPLM and then, we happen as well not to be wanting you and your party that might happen to be power, would we go forward as one people? This is completely unproductive behavior on our part as Southern Sudanese. This sense of me first and I am the best is our weakness, even our African brothers and not cunning Arabs would take advantage of us and exploit us. We have to be reasonable and value one another.

      Voice of Junubin,
there is nothing to connect president Kiir Mayardit with his gorial and Athor issue. General Athor need to first of all defined direction of his fight.if it means he is not contented with election results then there is due process of the court. this is how civilised world is solving such issues.however, if his problem is connected with Gier Chuong Aloung and renaming of Khorfulus to pigi then let him appeal to the government of sourthern sudan to reconsider their resolutions. and if his problem is about the plan to disarm him and his guards by force then let him go to Juba to find out the cause of commanding the spla to disarm and hand him over to the government and if Athor fails to do all what i mention then there is problem with general Athor deng. furthermore, let us all joint hand to make sure Athor Deng maintain his clean records since 1983.
so far as i know, he might have gotten sick and need to be check by doctors whether he has mental disturbance. this is because the Athor i know cannot fight without no course.

Athor has a right to declare a war against Mr. Kuol and his electoral commission in Bor for rigging the elcetion, all oppressors are equal, whether within or outside, people should react to it.
However, Kuol Manyang has no right to rig election in the name of SPLM, because people are equal shareholders as per liberation policy.

now we have seen and heard it. It is no longer a rumors, but a real war among South Sudanese. This is what NCP/NIF been hoping for since the signing of the CPA back in 2005. The question is: Where are those mongers who had been preaching the war in this site every single day? Now, are you happy for this mess? I hope not. But the real fighters will depend the course of marginalized people of South Sudanese; not the internet fighters who always make loud noises daily on this website.

I am stunned to see this event getting out of hand. I wonder what kind of plan Spla/m has for this unwanted threat against the South and its stability.

The escalation of the attack is likely to grow larger if not carefully appoach with care and bold act. The mobilization Groege Athor is doing now will even make it harder to ease that tension later. And the larming factors of the cause are somehow still in the hidding. SPLA/M needs to step in now and take corrective measures in handling the situation rightly.

Justice is the last resort of all, but Defense secretary Nhial Deng and the army staff general James Hoth should not take this issue as political thing. It is not political, it is rebellion against the movement and the South. They need eagle eyes on it so that no mistake is left when they deal with it. However, short term action is neccessary than later date action. The more leaders wait for the investigation to prove who causes this, the more this event will continue to grow bad. Anyone with hands in this must be brought to military term however way he wants it. This inconsiderate act is a big drawback, and therefore action is the only way to soothe that illy irratation against South. We don’t care whether it is Groege Athor or anyone else who does this for us, justice is badly needed to avoid such a thing from happening again in the future.

Long live South Sudan shouldn’t be an overnight joy for us with no meaning. We need to make it live longer than the few think it is over. No, it is a hope and that hope is in the heart of freedom we seek for a half century. No bais, no play!
Freedom is not within the interest of greedies; it is not within the money one seeks to have...it is just what it is in the heart of everyone. You fall down or win your heart’s temptation that is what makes it.

That is like a curse to we southerners always and this will never bring us the solution in any way.

Now who told most you that Kuol has rig election and from where did you gather such information.

Fisrt of all let us wage our leaders before we can judge issues out.Now to those who keep complaining, if you were to tell the trueth, who is the most popular to the people of jongle among the two leaders since in the begining of the movement is It Athor or Kuol?

I don’t see any reason of fingerpointing each other when we always falls into such circumstances .First and foremost we have to scruitiniz and analized the problems in between the two disputed partners then we can bark onto the air for solutions and belame.

To me ,Athor problems has nothing to do with neither election results nor being a failiars of last month election but this falls under planned that has been scheduled linking with election by the enemies of peace in the south.More over, if you were to mornitor the event that used to happened since the signing of the CPA then wouldn’t shout for such inccident. This was not the first time so far that we actually experience such inconvinience in the south.

I would rather say that this is the second time for such happening. Mabuto Mamur was blind fooled by cruel and selfih politician who want to over thrown KIIR government under coalation of many official within GOSS and by the time he was caught and brought on investigated table the immediately it was found as a planned cue attempt with names of many SPLA high rank just imagine that divil hearted people.Right, you need to know that it is power struggle within GOSS it self he is not alone!

kur I totally agree with you, however much am not from your uppernile, truth is kuol is so popular even here in bahr el gazal we know that since inception and jonglei Splm chair besides his experience. Athor excuses are fake 1,] the ammunition warehouse
          2 the pickups
          3 soldiers he killed
4 money heading papa 91 diverted
5 he is no longer in army
6 who bankrolled him for campaign/lam
7 go to court as any other politician

I noticed one thing which will happen, he wants Splm to negotiate and he gets a position. Period which will be bad precedent others will follow same trends ie riek did it, so is Athor now... It will be the only option knowing in mind lam akol blundered and said there will be no referendum hence negotiate it.

            Dear Deng Deng,

George Athor was in secret alliance with Dr. Lam Akol of the so-called SPLM-DC. He bankrolled him for his campaign and he got frustrated after was defeated. This is a planned action and he is acting now as an SPLM-DC military wing and other independent candidates who were disowned by the SPLM. GoSS needs to be very swift to contain these elements as soon as possible. Many players who want the south marred in chaos have hand in this and if not addressed soon, it would be catastrophic.

These are the consequences of weak administration. Many war veterans were not considered in the civil administration and in the army
1- Civil institution in ten state are full of new comers
2- Army in all division are full of militias those who do not write and read. Simply Government can be hijack
I personally accused those of political bureau, why they accepted such things to happen. Frankly speaking many senior officers are not happy with present GOSS not Athor a lone.
Peoples should be very careful. Suicidal mission may enter Juba with improvise explosive device and kill or harm [VIPS] this is a beginning of insurgency in the south if authority do not intervene positively.

How many malitia integrated in to SPLA who can cuase Athor to rebel against Kiir?

That is not the case that issue could be considered separately. Athor won the election for the state governorship and the NEC with the influence from Kiir favored Kuol Manyang that the election that probuck Athor.

        Black Tiger,
you donot need to comment on this side.but i would rather agree with you if we are in primitive societies to allow people to fight without the defined course. the war law does allow the fight or the war without the defined course internationally. you only like to pronounce the word rigging without knowing it meaning. rigging the election in the name of Splm as you have mentioned means what now.does it mean Kuol Manyang has forced the election high commitee to anounce him as the winner or does it means that Kuol coerced or forced the voters to vote for him in order to grant him with 165000 votesor does it means he has rigged the election by bribing all the agents and NEc officials to rigged the election in his favor. your comment is so childish. be very careful with your comments.
all observers including international observers were present during the tallying of the results form.

This issue of George Athor has nothing to do with the elections that just took place. George Athor had issues with Kiir regarding Matip’s position in the SPLA. When Paulino Matip forces emerged with the SPLA and Kiir made Matip as his deputy, Athor objected to that. He frankly told Kiir that if you make Matip the deputy commander of the SPLA forces, he never report to Matip nor would he respect him. He stated to Kiir that he was fighting those of Paulino Matip and Gatwech Dual all his live and now Matip would be his boss, that was not acceptable to him. He refused to come to Juba for some months back in late 2005 or early 2006 until Kiir convinced Him not to defect from the the SPLA.

In 2008, he was promoted to Lieutenant General and made as a deputy chief of staffs for moral. Then election came, he was hoping that the SPLM will accept him as its candidate for the governorship in Jonglei but that was not the case. He felt that SPLM/A is being control by former militias who he used to fight during the war.

This issue is all about a position in the government of South Sudan. Athor lost his former position as a deputy chief of staff and he lost his bet for the governorship. Kiir and Athor will settle this dispute by giving Athor a ministerial position in the next government.

Cursed and cursed to dead Gen. George Athor. I cannot understand how stupid this immoral SPLA officer could lost moral and commit this deadly rebellion in this critical time when enemy is denying Southerners right to exist. Goerge will die before he sees the PROMISED NATION of blacks right like others crazy wariors who turned Kalangshikov against their co-southerners. What has gone wrong for Athor to rebel against the anticpated promised independent South Sudan?

Whether Salva Kiir’s Government is bad or not, we are breathing slowly to let dream of our martyrs come true in 2011. There is no meaningful way for Athor to defend his rebellion in this critical time when Southerners are badly denied of their dignity. Look Arabs in the north, did they one day take arm rebellion against Omer Al Bahir despite numerous genocidal crime labelled against President Omer Al Bashir? I think their leaders are wise and not power-hunry like our leaders.

Athor’s rebellion would cause him thing he would have not imagined before. Athor cannot be trusted with good leadership because of his pasts. He blackmailed people of Atar and had them killed like fish while SPLA did not make him accountable. He should have been arrested right away like Gen. Mammur Moboto if SPLA military intelligent was doing its job. How come a General and leutenant in rank possessed thausands of cattle at home gaurded by Country’s official soldeirs? Athor’s behaviour was beyond Somalized kind of warlod’s behavior. Better for him to surrender at right time before Korfulous could tunr into unremember area in South Sudan history.

      World maker,

What do you know about Bor and its people?
Your daily comments are negative and naive on the internet.
Instead of talking about the current situation we are facing in the South, you left the road and beat the bush terribly. You quit hatred! Do you think that burning Bor to ashes will be a glory to you and your life? But know this it will be a possible cast to and the yet to come generation. What you wish to happen to others in devil’s name is in way possible to you in the name you call it to happen to them.
You beat that drum and make sure it will beat itself against you, likewise. Quality of mind is the measurement of human being. You are lacking the gift of knowledge the way you think.
However, though you will not be like the rest, you just learn to be a photocopy of human beings. Real naimals are trained to do things the way man does them, would you?

What develop this election fighting is to grape people’s money because they take as their sources of eradicating poverty people in Sudan are in poverty world.

    Dear Readers
Lt. General George Athor Deng and many other Generals who joined him have right to fight for their right for several reasone:
First of all. LT. General George Athor Deng won the the election in Jonglei state for governor position.

Lt. General George Athor Deng is supposed to be next governor of Jonglei State.

However, the SPLA/SPLM turned him down to be a looser in favor of incumbent governor Kuol Manyang.
Everone know that especially coward Dink Bors that LT. General George Athor Deng won the election of Jonglei State like Queen Angelina Teny in Unity State, LT. General Dau in NBG Region, LT. Gatluak Deng in Upper Nile and many General independent candidates from Greaters Equateria.
SPLA/SPLM turned these independent candidates down thinking that they don’t have power to do anything to SPLA.

Well, I think the SPLA misculculated it wrongly.

These independent candidates Generals have soldiers who support them in SPLA/ SPLM who will soon join them in just a matter of time.

These independent candidates Generals fought very hard for freedom.

Salva Kiir and Pagan Amum have no right to turned down these freedom fighters by tealing their victory and gave to the coward ones like Taban Deng Gai and Kuol Manyang who have never been in frontline during the fighting with enemy Arabs.

SPLA/ SPLM must be changed and LT. General George Athor Deng and many other Generals will change it very soon.

This country gonna run red with blood in just a matter of time, unless Salva Kiir step up and give back these independent candidates their victory of the election that he steal from them.
    Thank you all.

first of all, this is how primitive and unreasonable people put forward their baseless argument.
leave alone the issue of Athor Deng.it has no meaning.here, Athor has problem with Kiir, Athor has problem with Gier ,Athor has problem with Kuol Manyang,Athor has problem with Bol Kong ,Athor has problem with almost 3/4 of people including his wifes.who is this human being? this is already selfishness.if he is left with southern sudan where will he go with it.
