March 1, 2010 (JUBA) – Muslims in Southern Sudan held a conference in Juba with assurance from the top leadership of government allowing them to freely spread Islam in the semi-autonomous region.

The First Vice President of Sudan and President of Southern Sudan’s regional government, Salva Kiir Mayardit, told the conferees to preach and spread Islam freely as long as they separate it from politics.

Thousands of cheering members of Islamic religion, some of whom were invited from Middle Eastern countries, converged at Nyakuron Culture Center in Juba on Monday to discuss the future of Islam in Southern Sudan.

“Don’t just operate here in Juba; go to Torit, go to Yei, go to Warrap and other places,” Kiir told the conferees who responded with chanting, “Alah Akbhar” meaning God is great.

Kiir who is a frequent attendant of Kator Cathedral Church on Sundays in Juba, where he usually enlightens the congregation on political developments in the country, however warned Muslims to stick to religion and not mix it with politics when preaching, adding religion has no political party.

He also added that his government would be interested to receive the resolutions that would be passed in the conference.

Southern Sudan Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar, during the same occasion congratulated the Muslims for their successful organization in Southern Sudan after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

He explained that the SPLM-ruled government took a hard decision to assist in organizing Muslims in Southern Sudan, which he said the government was first reluctant to do given the policy of separating religion from the state.

The government finally decided to help the Muslims in organizing themselves and forming the Council of Islamic Affairs under the leadership of Sheikh Tahir Biar, a southerner from Jonglei state.

Some observers however say the body was probably established with the purpose of giving Muslims a focal point that would shoulder the responsibility of their activities in the South instead of letting them loose without a controlling central structure.

Sheikh Biar on his part commended the government of Southern Sudan for its good relations with the Islamic Council as well as the freedom given to Muslims in the South.

Sheikh Biar was previously also appointed as leader of the New Sudan Council of Islamic Affairs during the liberation struggle by late Dr. John Garang de Mabior.

His group was merged with the other Islamic groups inside the government controlled towns in the South after the signing of the CPA.

Hope this Islamic group won’t reach my village otherwise they will meet the worse part of their Islamic campaign there. Biar and group should use that highway right away off the Juba bridge to Jonglei.

Cowboy be carefully when running around with your short term political exercise. Such statement must be limited to political side not traditional principles. We took guns right from 1955 because of religion, shria law, power sharing and under development in South. Otherwise go praise islam in your own village not around other parts, I don’t see that praising religion will earn you more votes. Messing up with the real strategy will get yourself on wrong side.

islam is wrong and has no place in south sudan.

        Ahaa My Brother Samson,

You have also gone so deep which is not like that. Infact, I got frightened by the heading as clearly put. What does "Freely spread islam in the South means"? But when I went through the whole article, I discovered that the President indeed made some sense for the lesser evil. To separate politics from Religion is the best option if the Arabs wants politics with the Southerners, that is what the president is driving at. I think the president is correct by saying that because the Arabs are used to preaching politics with Religion in their pockets.

Ok, the word "to spread" may means a lot in which the president should have not use because spreading means coverting, convincing, buying, creating havocs in the name of Religion. There are no pagans in the south where the Arabs are officially allowed to spread their doctrine. All the Southerners are purely CHRISTIAN, baptised and committed to God. The President should have told the Arabs to freely make their trade in the south without buying people, follow the various traditions in the south and abode by regulations. The Arabs should be told to sell all types of Beer without claiming their religion here, or else they move away. Southerners are not hypocrites, cheating God at night and etc. We need a change which will for sure be determind by the 2011 Referendam.

There is a very fine line separating Islam as a religion from the state. In fact, it could be argued that the line does not exist if we consider the Islamic say that "Islam is religion and state." Your master’s speech is as good as his campaign manager saw it fitting as something that would sway that constituency’s vote in the upcoming elections.

I think the leaders of the South including SPLM should really be warned for their infinite liberal views. Liberalism, including religious tolerance should really be handled with carefulness.

I think the position taken by Kiir by authorizing Islam to flourish in the South is a very dangerous step. Southern Sudan is not and can not be a place for Islam to flourish anyhowly considering what Southerners have gone through because of this very same religion. Believe it or not, Islam has alway, is always and will always be mix with politics.

Encouraging Islam by Kiir to spread all over the South Sudan is not making sense at all, let them be in the South no problem but they shouldn’t spread to mess up our country.
I want to see Kiir after election and referendum what will be his true color in this issue.

                World Maker,
Not a single churge had been EVER destroyed in Khartoum or North Sudan .Destroying church or synaguages is strictly prohibited by Islam.Churches & synaguages existed in Egypt,Syria,Baghdad for Thousands of years. These churches existed before Europeans came to Africa to spread christianity.Yet nobody destroyed these churches, though these cities were the capitals of the Islamic state at different period of time.

The majority of Africans are muslims, and their countries were never invaded by the Arabs.Like Nigeria,Mali,Chad,Senegal...etc.Sudan itself was not invaded by the Arabs. There between the Arabs and Nubians stopped at Dungula

Islam is spreading all over the world and in America it is the fastest spreading religion.Islam is not the religion which belongs to the Arabs.

Islam denounces racism very strongly.Prophet Mohammed(pbuh) said it is "wrotten, leave it";"’Arabic is neithre your mother nor is your father,Arabic is just a tongue(language)";"You all belong to Adam and Adam is from earth(turab)"’Arabic is the sister language to Aramic language the language of Jesus(pbuh). In both these language Adam means black.

              Hi Mr Ding boy.
I do not hate Christianity niether Islamic because Iam not in one of them. But the problem with them is that both of them want you to just believe, belive and believe without proving it. Second both of them want you change your calture to their calture. Fore example,if your name is Ding,Bol,or Chan, both of them will say no, you need a new name like Peter,Mahemet and so on. This is their theory of killing other’s clature; And no doubt about that as you see Mahmet Biar and Salva was before he went to SPLA.

Iam asking human right to give us a right from the followings. Language, relgion, names, traditionals. Just leave us to use one of them. It is not good to give all yours us nsd leave us with none.

Lem me just do simple math here and for give me for it. If I join Islam, my mind will be sat up to pray facing east for three to four times a day for the reast of my lif . Change my name. My p.. will be cut off wich God put it for protaction.

And if I join christian, my mind will be sat up too. Fore instance, change my name. Go to church every Satrday or Sunday.

        Dear all,

Muslims in the southern Sudan should not expand Islam eventhough, they have a freedom of expression, gatherng, and forming association. They can worship their religion, but Islamic ideology in the south should also mean spread of the Sharia law, while it is not embraced by whole conscience.
Saliva and Riek Machar might be diplomatic with Muslims, but it is dangerous to our people. We do not sypathize while our future generations and lives is at the stake.

Islamic ideology is the worst so far, beacause their trainee is indocrinated who later commit suiccedal in the Isarelis, Afghanistan, and Iran.

We all remember Jihadi war in the southern Sudan struggles where Muslims brothers aiding themselves against non-Muslim. We were facing them during the wartime, it is their wish.

Terrorists war is number one in the world today and it is wagged by the Islamic extremists all over the world. Those extremists are recruitd in the middles eastern, and gulf arabs states.
Muslims in the southern sudan will have similar ideology, they could also involved in the Jihadi war.
We have to be careful with spread of Islam. Saliva Kiir must be careful while saying the political speech.

        Thank you,

Islam has spread through political will, invasion, and coercion; therefore, it is impossible to separate Islam from politic. Whatever is happening right now in South is just a political game.

South Sudan will never be resemble to Nigeria. Islam has done its own damage before the Christian in the south oppose its expansion. They need to work harder to proof its goodness, which I think hard to proof with the current affair.

If Kiir meant not to upset the Islamic world, I will considered it very smart approach since we are heading towards independent. This is a crucial moments, and we as Southern do not want to make more enemies than what we have already have.

A big "if". OF COURSE they will coordinate with Arabs of the north! If they don’t, they will be treated as apostates.
Muslims in the south will end up running the place. They will bring sharia and jihad. You will see.

Islam is not a religion but a system of demoniacs who drink the blood of the innocents. They cannot be given a license of freedom that they do not give to others. They got to leave the South of Sudan completely. They have shed enough of our blood in the name of this evil call Islam, and so their business is over.

Freedom of religion, is one of the principles of UN universal recognition of rights of believe, is it s human rights issue, it has nothing to do with politics, people are free to practise religion, but let them try their very best to keep religion out of politics, religion is a personal choice, they should keep it tothemselves, trying to mix religion with politics is not acceptable to everyone.

I want to tell you the truth that, 98% of Southern Sudanese people do not like Arab at all. To be honest with you Mr, Salve Kiir, I hate the word spread Islam in Southern Sudan and I hate it, hate it, hate it Muslim agendas. The good news is that, I am already to preparing my things in order to create another Movement known as the Southern Sudanese anti- Muslim [MSSAM] This Movement will deal with any Muslim in Southern Sudan and I am not going to let Muslim spread in Southern Sudan as long many people are anti-Muslim in Southern Sudan then, they will join me and that is good enough. Muslim in Southern Sudan must be worry about these 98% of Southern Sudanese people do not like Arab or Muslim than they want to create a stupid Muslim Affairs

Hey folks, i am not gonna name no names but just know yourself for you have prompted me to respond. initially , this is what you guys don’t understand from the get-go. Many of you just see thingS from your noses but not at a horizon .SPLA went to the bush to fight an injustice with right ideologies , and those ideologies did’t equated in the Islam as the flat form of wagging the war. we could have failed terribly if that was the one of the agendas. we could have not even had a chance to talk about CPA or what Muslims are doing in the south .

To drive home my point, many Muslims have sideline or help us directly or indirectly to fight the war against their Muslim brothers. they did that not because they didn’t preferred their Muslim’s brothers over Christian’s brothers or animists ,but because they didn’t like the suffering the government where inflicted on the marginalizes under bearer of islamization or jihad-ism. However, if we were fighting over the religion then there could have been no any reason Qaddafi’s a Muslim by virtue , helped donate his arsenals to SPLA back in 1984 so that we could come and fight the government whom he religiously attached. That machine-gun was dubbed by SPLA as "forty-six". i hope one could recall that. In addition, let alone the vast Nubians who had poured in to fight for our cause who were well enlightened Muslims , but what about those Muslims such as cd. Bior who is now the head of muslims in southern sudan, cdr. Yusif kuwa, cdr. Malik aggar, Yasir Arman, and Mansour Khalid just to mention few who were in the front-line fighting their Muslim’s brothers? what would you tell them now ? that you have dearly helped us but it’s now a time to pack your things and go to the North where you can freely practice your religion. i don’t think so. This kind of words would not come out of any mouth of a true SPLA who was trained in the same unit with Muslim brothers from Nuba Mts or else where, drafted together, and fought Torit, Yei , Juba , Rumbek , and many towns together.
However, it’s my known conventional wisdom that it’s always easy to find some one to eat when the food is ready. It’s now ready so every opportunists(nyagats) who didn’t had anything to do with the ideologies the SPLA was fighting the war have now weight in to put in their zero sense. how pathetic is that? what they don’t know is that SPLA ’s political ideologies have not change then or now and it’s okay for you to make the background noise that will not impede the moving wheel. Salva Kiir’s statement is in place coupled with those measures. SPLA Oyeeeeeeeeeee.

        Mr Tribe,

I agree with you 100% with you. Indeed, about 75% responding to this news think that they don,t want Muslim in the South, bout Why? You and I already said it.

We can not Kill them, Chase them away, or we can not forced them to Christianity or other traditional beliefs. Yes, no SPLA can denied our Muslim brothers and sisters accept those none SPLM or untrained who know less about the substantial of SPLM, or Nyagatins who simply hate SPLM because of their weak heart and slavery heart against SPLM.

See , a lot of people misconceive that i am supporting Muslim in the South because Salva Kiir Mayardit said it, and others said that because he is from Dinka, some even said that because people like Biar are Muslim. I don,t think if South Sudan was like that before, then we would have lost the war because most of this generations were born in refugees camps and others in their hut of hatred knowing nothing about SPLM.

Yes, who are trained knows it very well that we were not fighting the Muslim, but we were fighting the mistreatment that Northerners did to our people in the South. I don,t know when will primitive people in the South especially those of Nuer and few Equatorians will learned the important of SPLM while we all die 95% and we all lost the greater generation that we will get back.

Mr tribe, you said it and some of my brothers and sisters with ambition knows what we are doing about. Thanks

Don’t be so naive. Islam IS politics. Learn about it. Inviting Islam to spread is suicidal; Islam will devour you, as it always does. Forget what the stupid UN says and try to defend yourselves while you can. What the hell did you fight for all those years? For nothing?

    Hey Salva Kiir Miyardit,

Your weakness is quiet obvious through the way you look. What make the life of 2 millions people lost in Southern Sudan is because of Muslims. If you litterly mean that Arabs should continued preaching their religions within Southern Sudan like as you said in your statement that Arabs should also preach their religion even in Yei and Juba plus others areas.

If you like Arabs Salva Kiir, then it is better for you in order to allow them in Akon County which is your native place. What you like is not what other people like so far. Salva Kiir Miyardit, you will remain stunted because the vision you are trying to show is completely serving no purpose at all. Be frank or loyal to your people that if Arabs from Khartoum Government bribed you, then go to Khartoum and work in Sanitation Department which is not involved with politic.

It is really useless if Omar Bashir made his campaign in Juba. I’m really getting fate up because why God always give a wrong gift to Southern Sudanese people? When we Southern Sudanese tried to get a prosperity life God prevented us from getting a sweet fruit and give us unrippened fruit which is not rippen. Look, Lord Jesus Christ, 22 years in war and now our leaders from Southern Sudan wanted us to kneeled ourselves to Arabs.

"Lord, we are not worthy to receive you, but said the word or open the minds of the Southern Sudanese leaders and we shall be healed from a gangreen wound". Lord, we are thirsty of your power, but would you please lifted us from darkness? Make us like other people who are enjoying their life in other countries. Lord, you can imagined that around the globe, there is no place where you can not find any one of Southern Sudanese people. But, it does not mean that the Southern Sudanese people have no place to live in. Obviously, what make them scattered all around is not because that they don’t have a dwelling place, but because no one willing enough to take them to the promise land. Lord, the whole Southern Sudanese people including me who wrote this article love you, but we need your help. Lord, give us a right person to fight for our right otherwise if not, then take us back to the hands of Arabs.

Haaa! Haa! Ha!!! JUst read this:

Kiir who is a frequent attendant of Kator Cathedral Church on Sundays in Juba, where he usually enlightens the congregation on political developments in the country, however warned Muslims to stick to religion and not mix it with politics when preaching, adding religion has no political party.

I thinks it is a positive approach a good leader should put into consideration. Freedom to worship is important because it unite us and alter our perception in the way we approach religion and politics. We all knows that imposition of Islamic law in the south is also considered to have contributed to 1983 break away of SPLM/A. You can not compel the people to do what is against their will, That can be considered as dictatorship. It was a good point to highlight the issue of beliefs and politics. Sudanese were not at war because of religion but because of inability of leaderships in Khartoum. There is nothing democratic if we can not allow people a freedom of worship. islamic and christianity can not divide us. Religion always look at the positive aspects of living and disregade negatives. I totally agree with Kiir in this issue.
