Netherlands renews its participation in UNMIS for one year

March 5, 2010 (THE HAGUE) — The Dutch government decided to extend its participation in a 10,000 stronghold mission mostly deployed in southern Sudan for another year until April 2011.

Following the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in January 2005 the Netherlands contributed to the peacekeeping mission (UNMIS) by 35 Dutch military and police personnel.

Fifteen military observers and fifteen police officers will serve for one year in the region around Juba, the regional capital of southern Sudan. In addition, five staff officers will work at the UNMIS headquarters in Juba and in the national capital, Khartoum.

The Dutch contingent will leave for Sudan as soon as it has been established that the agreed security requirements will be met and medical facilities provided. The expected departure date will be in January 2006.

This decision was made by a caretaker cabinet following a request from the UN just two weeks after the fall of the center-left government on Feb. 20.
