February 7, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese opposition parties have agreed on a joint plan to coordinate among their bases in the upcoming elections to defeat the candidates of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) at all levels.
The parties comprised of the Juba conference participants held in Juba last year will meet on Monday with the presence of the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) which is the junior partner in the government of national unity.
The coalition spokesperson Farouk Abu Essa said that the parties are close to endorsing the list of candidates for the parliament and governors.
Essa said that the NCP is “extremely hostile to democracy and national movements” in addition to “opposition defectors” which he described as “ugly propagandists” to the ruling party and a “whip on the back of the opposition”.
There are currently 145 candidates from the various parties running for governor with 51 independent; 1958 for parliament from the parties with 418 independent; for the Legislative Council of southern Sudan, 396 from parties and 107 independents.
The Umma Reform and Renewal Party (URRP) leader Mubarak Al-Fadil said that Sudanese president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir running for reelection will not be able to win from the first round and will lose in the second round against a unified candidate from the opposition.
Al-Fadil added that Bashir does not have a popular base or political support and is relying on a “divided totalitarian party”. He warned that the NCP may resort to rigging the elections to avert this scenario.
However, the NCP political office Ibrahim Ghandour dismissed Al-Fadil remarks saying that the opposition presidential candidates will get no more than 35% of the votes with Bashir winning 65%-75%. Ghandour added that a survey conducted last year showed that Bashir will receive 96% of the votes.
The Sudan Tribune online poll conducted over the last week showed that 7.5% of the 21,642 readers that took part favored Bashir with 46.6% of the votes going to Umma Party leader Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi and 39% to Yasir Arman from the SPLM.
A separate poll made by the Arabic language Sudanile online portal showed 52.9% of the 16,794 votes going to Bashir, 19.3 to Al-Mahdi and 16.8% to Arman.
