French foreign minister praises courage of Sudan’s trouser journalist

November 24, 2009 (PARIS) — France’s foreign minister, Bernard Kouchner, today commended the courage of Lubna Hussein a Sudanese journalist and women’s rights activist who was recently released from jail after charges of violating Sudan’s rigid dress code.

Last September, the judge ordered the female journalist to pay a fine of 500 pounds ($200) or else be jailed for 30 days after being convicted of indecent dressing. Lubna refused to pay the fine but she was released well before her one month jail sentence expired.

"We are all concerned by this (situation) because the subject of the violation of human rights, particularly the rights of women, affects us all," said Kouchner in a joint press conference with the Sudanese journalist who is visiting the French capital this week.

"It is a very great struggle," he further said adding "It is a very important struggle for Arab women and for African women." The minister also disclosed that Lubna would receive soon an award in Cairo from an Arab Women’s organization for her work.

Kouchner said Tuesday that 43,000 women were arrested in and around the Sudanese capital alone in such cases last year.

Last July Lubna had been arrested by Public Order Police along with a dozen other girls and charged with dressing inappropriately. She also resigned from her post at the UNMIS to waive her immunity bestowed upon employees of the world body.

The minister stressed that Lubna has not only fought against her arrest, "she had the courage to speak out against the article 152 of the Islamic law which is applied in Sudan since President Bashir is in power.”

Article 152 of the Sudanese Penal Code 1991 states, in summary, that: Whoever does in a public place an indecent act or wears an obscene outfit shall be punished with flogging which may not exceed forty lashes or with fine or with both.

"This woman is a model for her great simplicity and her persistent courage," he added, noting that France considers itself "a comrade in her struggle."

The ex-employee at the United Nations Mission Sudan (UNMIS) has used her case to draw attention to a law that allows flogging as a punishment for any acts or wearing clothing that are viewed as offending morals.

The Sudanese journalist who is Paris to promote for a book she wrote about her case told reporters she had been unfairly banned from leaving her country but got out by hiding under a head-to-toe Islamic niqab.

Lubna left Khartoum for the Yemeni capital Sana’a and paid a visit to Cairo and Amman where she had been invited by women organizations before to arrive in Paris.

"I have not fled the Sudan. The Constitution gives me a number of rights including the right to travel. Those who prevented me from traveling previously violated the constitution," she said.

The former French President, Jacques Chirac also received today the Sudanese journalist to show his solidarity with her cause.

          AK-47

Your just amazing. Let’s forget narrow mined individuals like Oduko. Oduko is the kind who, when the Arab say, do A, B or C and I will give you this, is likely to accept and cause damage to his own mother or father or siblings or fellow Southerners. Oduko, tell me,why is there need for a mutual coexistence or trade or even movement of people from one place to another?

First of all, Arabs are cursed. Let them read about Musa the palestine muslim who converted into Christianity to have some freedom. This is an example of a person who have lived it and have therefore known all the risks of continuing as a muslim.

Your point is right Mr. AK-47. Instead of stopping massive killings, they stupidly resorted to implementing useless Islamic laws which are just political rather than truly reflecting the humanistic aspect of coexistence emphasized in both the Bible and the Koran. There is freedom of everything both in our societies as well as in the religious teachings. Lubna, you the the true activist.

          reply

          • "...humanistic aspect of coexistence emphasized in both the Bible and the Koran..." I am interested in this comment. Where in the Koran is "humanistic coexistence" emphasized? In the Koran I see lots of advice to Muslims about not taking Christians and Jews as friends, not trusting them, permission to enslave, forcibly convert or subjugate people who refuse to convert, and general boasting that Allah-worshippers are superior to everyone else. Islamic history confirms that Muslims take this stuff seriously. Where is the humanistic coexistence? Surely you south Sudanese should know the "true message" of Islam, and that harmonious coexistence with non-Muslims was the last thing on Mohammed’s mind when he exhorted his followers to kill the infidels, and take their wives and belongings as booty!

Mind you, Lubna Hussein is ignorant of Islam too. She has the idea that Mohammed was a benign fellow. I wonder where she got that idea?!

            • It so sad that,to hear some people labelling others by all the contents of their shallow-primitive conception.Dinkas or a non-Dinkas are SouthernSudan citizens, all are equal in the eyes of God and infront of the Law.

Islam is a spiritual way of living, but the NIF/NCP deformed the genuineness of its mission.Whatever NCP is enforcing under the Islamic Sharia Law,is a hypocricy and has nothing to do with Islam than defaming its followers.

              Brothers,

Religion is a personal issue and a fundamental right to all mankind, stated and secured by Geneve Convention (Human Rights Charter). As a Sudanese,we should not let our fellow citizens to humiliated in public under whatever pretext, even a religion ones.Freedom has no other meaning than it is the cornerstone of Demcracy .Also to claim our rights of freedom,we have to keep fighting to secure it to the others, who are in need to be suported aginst their false prophets and scholars of NIF/NCP.

Lets stand-up and support our faminal community and free them from the so called"((hypocratically))" Islamic Laws unjustice...Peace Out

God be with France. Lubna can free women like her in Middle East Africa Europe North America Australia and Asia. Islam is prison for women. In some countries they can not even drive cars.

    reply

  • Arabs or muslims please respect your women and recognize that they are equal and able to make their own decisions, do not descriminate your women because they are the centre of your families and deserve respect, leave the women in Sudan to be who they want and do what is right as long as it is not something abnormal, if you descriminate against women to put your whole society downwards.

When Lubna go back to Sudan the NCP authorities should respect her rights and dicisions and leave her to live her life without intimidation or threats.

  • Good Luck to Lubna Hussein.

She is the representatives of 1 million women from the entire nation of Islamic countries, and I hope every move she makes will succeed for the womens right in that countries.

  • I just have a question to Muslims?

Are women allows to wear underwears, what does Ilsamic holy book Quran say?

    reply

    • Some of the extremist, who have a strict, and an Arabic cultural approach to interpret the Quran will forbid women from underwear as it has direct contact with the vagina, they consider any part of the woman body as (Aaora) or as sexually provoking, and causes sexual arousal (that’s why they cover’m in hiijab). Arabs are women haters; they killed their daughters right at birth, for sexual reasons, as they perceived women would bring sham to the family (this is how fucked up the Arabs are) back in the days. Women are sexual toys as far as the Arabs are concerned, and they use them, and abuse them these days, and they brought that with their Islam to also abuse the African daughters, but we say otherwise.

  • Hello dears,

What happen in Sudan is not actually good, this is modern world whereby you can people work in freedom lifestyle. women’s rights activist who was recently released from jail after charges of violating Sudan’s rigid dress code is unfairly mode.

Arabs code of dressing need not to be influence to the rest of the world otherwise Sudan is no longer Arabs country like before when people were seals in one rooms, drinkingof alcohol is prohibited,

If we consider Arabs style of dress then we threaten those who study different culture like those in East Africa who loke busting everytime.

                • Dear all,

Any one can be a refugee at one time in his/her life. Some of those who were refugees, or even prisoners at one time, ended up leading their Nations. Politics can force any capable individual to take a refuge once in his/her life. It is not a shame to be a refugee. I was a refugee long time ago in Sudan, but today, I am a USA citizen with all the rights the people exercise. We the people in the USA do have the supreme power to determine our destiny, through the democratic institutions, and respect of our constitution. The three branches of our Government: THE EXECUTIVE, JUDICIARY, & LEGISLATIVE are not, were not and will never be controlled by a single dictator, and call it democratic institution.

Coming back to the term "Refugee" I feel honored to take refuge in Sudan for the principles I believed in, and earned the Name Refugee!!!! My dreams and fundamental belief did not end when I became a refugee. It energized me to push myself to reach where I am today.

May god help all those who may need help at one time in their lives!!!!

                  Asalaam Aleikum,

                  Mohammad

                  • What were you running away from, Mohammed? Islam, by any chance? An Islamic government forcing Islamic Sharia law on you? And have you taken Islam with you to the US? Well thanks very much. Now in the US there are Muslims pushing hard for Sharia. In the end, you will either support them or be called apostate. And that will be the thanks the US gets for letting you Muslim "refugees" in.

Fight against Islam in your own countries, Muslims! Stop bringing your wretched religion to infect the West!

                    reply

      • You are absolutely right.Trousers are not forbidden in Islam and Khartoum is full of girls who are wearing trouseres.I don’t think this is the full story!

This lady married a famous journalist who owns alsahafa newspaper when he was 84 years old when she married him, he went into coma about 3-4 days after marriage and died in Abu Dhabi where he was spending his "honey-moon".She inherited a huge amount of money, because he has no childrens from his first wife!

She really knows how to play her cards!

Now she is a human right fighter, with a little much more money.

Who was the French who said : oh freedom !how many lives been taken in your name!

        reply

        • To the "Visitor",

Maybe you are a retard, or totally insane. Either way, me and you, neither we speak the same language, nor do we have the same ethical principle. USA is not a backward third world country. No body takes nothing to the USA. Religious freedom is one of our non-bridgeable rights. I know you do not understand that.

          Bye for now.

          Mohammad.

          reply

          • There is no such thing as a "non-bridgeable right". Anything can change. The OIC will do everything to change the US in its favour and Obama is on their side. Americans are worried. People like you talk about "freedom of religion" knowing full well that when Islam gets a big enough foothold in a place, freedom of religion is compromised.

The US was founded by people with a certain culture: these people "took something" to the country and developed it into a place millions of people want to go to. No-one wants to emigrate to Muslim countries. Why not?

Calling me a "retard" or "insane" will not change my opinion. Instead it makes me worry more about Muslims in our countries. Always these ridiculous insults.

            reply

            • To the so-called visitor,

I do call a spade "spade". Here in USA we are not so concerned with the growth of Muslims, Hindu, or Baha’i religious groups. We do have a constitution which is respected, adhered to, beside being above every body. We do have trust in our Democratic system. Remember that in case you are scared of you own shadow, that does not necessarily put every walking human kind under the same hysterical hallucinations.

Poor soul, May the almighty god give you his mercy,

              Mohammad
