The attempt on Dr. Kwaje’s life smells as political!

By Justin Ambago Ramba

November 17, 2009 — Last Sunday, the 15th of November 2009, South Sudan witnessed yet another attempt at a political assassination when the vehicle of the SPLM’s senior official and GoSS minister of Agriculture was reportedly have been attacked along the Wonduruba – Lanya road while on an election mobilization mission.

Though Dr. Kwaje escaped the attack only with any injury to his right arm, unfortunately the loss of other four lives still that include his driver and body guard and the wounding of five other people marks the whole event as the beginning of a bloody election season yet to be witnessed in other parts of the country and especially so in the semi – autonomous South Sudan where insecurity is ripe and the law enforcement still at its most rudimentary stage.

* *** Already another politician, the late spokesperson of the Women’s Desk in the dominant National Congress Party (NCP) Mrs. Mariam Biringi was assassinated in the remote western town of Yambio in the Western Equatoria State (WES) barely ninety days ago by unknown gunmen. The findings of the investigations which were reluctantly started are yet to be made public if any.

The culture of impunity that has dominated the politics and government performance in the semi-autonomous South Sudan, has given way to the emergence of gun crimes almost in every part of the region. However the area where H.E Dr Kwaje was attacked remains to be one of the most secured areas in the entire South Sudan. The widespread possession of firearms by the local indigenous population or the existence of any local armed militia groups for that matter are things never heard of in this particular county. Apparently the only group of people to roam about carrying guns would most likely be either regular government forces and to a less extend the Ugandan LRA. But of course the heavy presence of the SPLA soldiers and some loyal armed citizens who enjoy the former’s (SPLM/A) approval, blessing and support, however strongly puts the GoSS agents as possible culprits.

To be very specific, I do not entertain the idea that the attack would have been carried out by the Pojulu people, nor by people loyal to the National Congress Party (NCP) of the fugitive President al Bashir or any other local South Sudanese political groups. If we ask the locals, they obviously know those who criss-cross the area with their rifles hanging carelessly on their shoulders. But of course to strictly target the minister who was on a political mission connected with the run up for the forth coming elections is destined to arouse many eye brows.

Again, whatsoever the motivations behind this attack would be, the fingers do not point far from the SPLM party itself. This dominant party (SPLM) in Southern Sudan has a complete control over the security and runs a tight intelligence network all over the region. This party’s hand in what is happening in South Sudan should not just be pushed aside as if we are in a no man’s land. GoSS is a government like any other government in the world, and though it may be the worse and the weakest as far as good governance is concerned, it is still to be held responsible for the security of its citizens.

At this point I would like to shade light on what people in South Sudan take for guaranteed. We know that crime exists every where, and politically motivated crimes are not a monopoly of any particular community in the world. I also want us to come to terms in accepting that, state sponsored crimes are also existing realities especially so in areas undergoing post-war political upheavals. All these are waiting for us outside there whenever we step outside our fortified residences and safe cocoons in the big towns. These are some of the many real challenges that await our law makers in the South Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA) and the State Assemblies all over the ten states, that the failure they demonstrated in establishing a competent executive government institutions will possibly cost them their lives when they return to their respective constituencies to campaign and run in the forth coming elections.

History is now busy recording one of most chaotic government performances that is unfolding in Southern Sudan. And to pretend that all is well has in fact reached its limits as the rulers themselves are now resorting to settle their scores by the bullets before the ballots. More will reveal itself to the public as days go and the anticipated investigations if at all conducted in a professional way will yet yield findings that many government pockets would wish to keep in the dark.

May be it is time that all concerned South Sudanese citizens start looking beyond today and into the future and try to imagine the security situations in the region in the aftermath of this coming elections. It can not be overstressed that all events that are to proceed the general elections are bent to carry along with them a lot of uneasiness to all, including those politicians who would want to change the current status quo which only benefits a few. Nevertheless in the name of fulfilling the CPA, we are bound to go on with the elations despite the fact that the complex nature of the voting process in itself carries the obvious entry to creating disappointments when many of the votes may end up being disqualified due to errors that goes back to voters illiteracy, ignorance and intolerance to the other rival political groups.

Apparently once it all gets out hand, no one can be considered any safer. When it comes to dirty politics, where the government itself is straddled with corruption, any one becomes a legitimate target once the secrets of the inner circles including that of the God Father himself are at stake. To keep the lids in place, some friends unfortunately may have to be sacrificed. How closer or how high you are in the system may not matter any longer.

I can only conclude my message here by extending my heart felt condolences to the relatives of those who lost their lives in this brutal and cowardice attack. May God Almighty rest the lives in Eternal Peace!

  • Khent,

If you are not a prostitute then your mum was possibly a prostitute and you inherit her manners. You are included in the above list because you argue without a limit. Your refute of mr trueman’s message about the statement Dr Lam made expose you as naive debator. The stupid words you use there defending Nuer indicate that either you inherit prostitution from your mum or you learn it. Please learn on how to debate and stop being stupid.

Why are you trying to point fingers at the SPLA Dr. Ambago when the culprits have been confirmed to be locals of Dr. Samson Kwaje’s area. This kind of negative propaganda and lack of respect for our army and the ruling SPLM will lead us to nowhere but destruction. I am so pissed at cowards like you who never shot a single bullet against the enemy but have been quick to heavily criticize our freedom fighters of the SPLM. Of course this cowardly attack on one of our great freedom fighter deserves strong condemnation by peace loving citizens of the south. But however it shouldn’t be a platform for selfish and tribalists like you to shamelessly accuse the SPLA of misdoings. Shut up if you have nothing positive to contribute to our struggle rather negative articles that continually damage the reputation of Southern Sudan in the eyes of the international community.

Dr Ambago has not evidently supported his argument and the grounds he stated are not linked to whether SPLM was behind the assassination attempt or was the incident purely locals who allegedly have been calling for a separate county but got no convincing response. I don’t like culture of assassination which has long been known as a Kenyan culture and the then movement.

I am not a political junky and thus nor do I blindly support any evil conduct of any Political Party which prioritises monetary and power interests of individuals ahead of public interest. Today’s Ambago argument has no evidence to critically convince people like myself.

Are you politicians’ brothers? Because if you are so, then don’t know anything. Insulting words like stupid, coward etc. are all disrespect words and indiscipline, committed due to unsound knowledge and illiterates. Don’t we know these types of words will lead to destructions and unrest in our society? Be proud to be southern but not specific tribe because together we can do something. We shall optimize for tomorrow not pessimism, I know there can be good future in south but we need to follow the best techniques and work for what we determined. Today if I say something wrong about SPLA it doesn’t means I don’t like my SPLA but through my advices and criticisms will strength him and makes him better then before. SPLA today is something else contrast to past three years and I am so proud of them for their striving and hardship work which is still awake. Brothers don’t mind any one to express his feelings and views about SPLA or any authorized office because his right can not be ignore or deny and once we gone opposite we might be consider as a trouble seeker and as u know trouble always having no place in our heart or benefit. Silence is a mark of wisdom and I will be asking you to just work or do something by any means to provide peace and gather all southern tribe into one Nation.

That is how you prove your logic Mr Ramba for quoting that the attacked was carried by outsider, since yesterday i dsiagree to those who believe that Dr Samson kwaje was attacked by his Pojulu or Equatorians. I can smell the footprint of this evil who attempt to kill our hero Dr kwaje Samson. My question is, why is that Kiir just left to UK to see his investment properties then immediately such things happened?, like i said, money matter and this poor election is not going to be peaceful. It is true here in Juba lots of rumours are running around and for sure up to the end of this days i will suspect some links about who exactly was the devil in this land of Greater Equatoria. This nation is now full of germs, dogs, criminals, killers, murders, monkeys who have abandon their violent villages, and now they are here to committe crimes along the peace loving areas, looting at night in order to survive becoem their only way of living life. Some people are in agender. Riek, Igga and Amum must maintain their personally security beyond the expected standard because the storm has signal by this thunder attack of innocent minister. People are now fighting with $DG, our own $$$ been used aganist us and our leaders. Culture of wildness, barbarism, creazness, foolishness and stupidity is now in practice within Greater Equatoria State. We all know the origine of this culture including those who are doing it serectly in Equatoria.

    Dear Justin Ambago Ramba,

I want to give you some piece of advise brother. Some people prefered to stay away from composing articles when they feel like they will create tribalism. I advise you to take the same path of not wasting your spare time composing nonese on this website. SplA was the one rescued DR Samson Kwaje in his own village.

Blaming SPLA for nothing seem contradicted to the attempt. Please just asked the cause of the attacked and then write your nonese here. Their own people are now arrset for the murder attempt Dr Kwaje and they are now being investigated. You are NCP agent or Lam Akol who lick Bashier ass in Khartoum. Thanks

    • Dr Ramba,

If you were not born a liar then you were taught. The assassination attempt on Dr Kwaje had nothing to do with SPLM as you foolishly put it. The incident was carried out by a group of tribal youth who were unhappy with their land dispute. I think you should go and read the report first before expressing your short-sighted wisdom.

SPLM-phobia which you are pregnant with will not lead you to the paradise. We will rule you right from your head to your toe as long as you are educated but remain mentally primitive as you always display.

SPLM is your driving force to independence and freedom. Love it or hate it still you shall remain glued to it as the only viable party.

"Your frequent immature remarks indicate how and why we rule you".

Please abstain from those Nuer boys otherwise you will be led to the world of no-return.

      We are closely watching you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mr Door, Dr Ramba’s analysis of the attempted murder of Dr Samson isn’t being targetted to an individual but to the general population and of ofcourse SPLM as a government of South Sudan. This does not mean that he blames the president or his vice but whoever works for SPLM including Dr Ramba himself because he survived the 21 years of war through the protection of SPLA/M. Now, let us not always jump into conclusions as if we are always suspicious of our ill-treatments of our own people. I want to ask you that is SPLA/M an individual business run by only one person or a family or is it an organisation that represents a total population of the South Sudan? If SPLA/M is for all, then it deserves to be criticised and blamed for any matter that happens to the people of South Sudan. We therefore need not talk about individuals who work for SPLA/M as people who are being blamed. When we talk of a government, we are always not referring to individual people who work for that government but the government or the ruling party itself as a public entity liable to be blamed for its weaknesses or anything else.

We need not argue about why Dr Samson was attacked or who attacked him and his group members, it is known from the rumours that he has been attacked by his own people of Wonduruba, we believe no one can deny this fact. But the question remains that why was he attacked and who instigated or formed or organised the attackers? The fact is that nothing will remain hidden in this world until the end of it, we will soon know about what happened and who were involved in it.

We lost our beloved ones and we terrorised one of our leaders, someone who has showen us the spirit of prosperity and humanity and have struggled tirelessely for the freedom of South Sudan.

Almighty God will heal his wounds together with those who awre injured in this terror attack and make them well again. We pray to God to rest the souls of those who were murdered in their cold blood.

A reminder to all the readers and authors of comments in Sudan Tribune is that we should not immediately blame other people as being behind actions such as these but we should be patien in waiting for the truth to be brought to the forefront of the South Sudan by the investigators. In so doing, we will be able to withstand matters like these and avoid further escalation of issues.

The issue of insecurity in southern sudan is a problematic and it need to come to an end. who are these people that killing people in the south?

What is GoSS doing to ensured there is security? I think all these incidents happening are to be blamed on the GoSS and Kiir’s inability to disarm civilians.

Many lives are lose daily due to the insecurity related matter and the SPLM/A blamed Khartoum for it own failure.

I wish people of southern sudan have guts to think for the destiny of land under the senseless leadership of Kiir. Southerners are being misled to do wat they will regret in centuries to come.

What is the purpose for the election by the way? who a candidate in the south running for presidency?

Kiir’s is incapable to run but trying to just manipulated resources for his good and allowing the civilians die now and then.

Southerners are not instructed how to vote and who to vote for, so what is the purpose of registration?

So how are they going to vote? is kiir’s for south sudanese? self centered tribal man?

Born poor remain poor don’t blame some body for your poor life. It was your drunk parents who fail to catch up with better life. Go away miserable pig. Last time you talk about tractors and delimma like your one of those sick and arrogant Wonduruba in Equatoria.
