Rift emerges between Mbeki & Bassole over Darfur peace process: source

November 15, 2009 (WASHINGTON) – The joint United Nations (UN) - African Union (AU) mediator Dijibril Bassole is becoming increasingly discontent with the chairman of the AU High Level Panel on Darfur (AUPD) Thabo Mbeki following the Peace and Security Council (PSC) summit held last month in Abuja, a senior African diplomat told Sudan Tribune.

Former South African president Thabo Mbeki (L) and Joint United Nations and African Union mediator for Darfur, Djibril Bassole (R)

The PSC summit endorsed the report compiled by the AUPD which conducted regional and local missions to come up with recommendations that will harmonize peace, justice and reconciliation as a roadmap to end the six year conflict in Darfur.

The diplomat who spoke on condition of anonymity said that Bassole arrived in Nigeria only to discover that his name was left off the list of speakers at the summit by the AU secretariat.

After several inquiries Bassole discovered that Mbeki was behind the move and got the impression that the former South African president is seeking to sideline him and take over the Darfur mediation, he said.

“He [Bassole] was told informally that the report was the product of the AU and as such he had no business addressing the PSC,” the diplomat added.

After the UN-AU joint mediator made formal complaints to the African leaders, he was allowed to address the PSC.

The diplomat claimed Mbeki and the AU Commission Chairman, Jean Ping of “fighting a silent battle” with the UN to take the Darfur file away from the world body.

“Ping is one of those people with militant views on rejecting any non-Africans taking part in solving the continent’s problems and playing the Western conspiracy card all the time in reference to the [UN] Security Council. His positions and public support of Khartoum is a reflection of these views and is becoming increasingly problematic to the AU’s credibility. Mbeki shares Ping’s views but is smarter about expressing them” he said.

“They view Bassole as being closer to the [UN] Security Council than the AU which is why they don’t feel comfortable with him. Bassole is trying to be impartial in his role without favoring the Sudanese government and they [Mbeki & Ping] don’t like that” the diplomat added.

This week Mbeki expressed disappointment with what he suggested to be a non-endorsement by the UN Security Council (UNSC) to the AUPD report with an implicit criticism of Western countries sitting on the council.

“They’re [UNSC] extremely upset because we didn’t deliver a report stating that a bloody war was taking place. There is still a low-intensity war going on, since there has been no peace agreement yet. People who allege otherwise, are creating their own convenient and self-justifying reality,” he said at an address at the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Law on Wednesday evening.

He urged African countries to strengthen ties with China adding that “Western countries are becoming increasingly concerned about China’s growing presence in Africa”.

Western members at the UNSC have been at odds with the leadership of the United Nations-African Union mission in Darfur (UNAMID) for their depiction of the conflict as a ‘low intensity’ one.

The former UNAMID chief Rodolphe Adada was forced to resign after Western countries expressed dissatisfaction over his performance but he bitterly defended his tenure and lashed out his critics insisting that war in Darfur is over.

Actually I have the lowest opinions of the south Africans and their leadership. Whether they are led by Mandela, Mbeki or Jacob Xuma. All I know is their slavery attitudes.

If Thabo Mbeki wants to appears like his predeccessor slave Nelson Mandela, so be him able to.

Actually mandela was the greatest shame of Africa and the black race as a whole and all the black holds their heads down in the name of Nelson Mandela. Shame on South African leaders in the past and praise to our true African son His Excellency President Jacob Xuma for ordering the arrest of the infidel, product of incest Omar or Donkey Al Beshir.

I hate Mandela, Mbeki and Al Beshir.

        Pupu is jacob Xuma’s food.

Pupu means dog shit in English and that is what the former president Thabo Mbeki eats at home as staple food.

Shame on Thabo Mbeki and his tribe and the man history is doomed to hell and may God bless Africans minus Mandela and Thabo Mbeki and their like minded who are in the pocket of the arabs.

      • I think you don’t know much about Mandela. I can tell you one thing, if we had a leader like Mandela in the north or the south or the east or the west of Sudan, we wouldn’t be where we are today. If it wasn’t for Mandela and co., people in South Africa will be enslaved up to date, there will be no Zuma (the one that you praise), no world cup for Africa and people would have continued to suffer.

Mandela was successful because he managed to forgive and move forward. He put the best interest of his country and his people ahead of his emotions and personal suffering. NO country based on hate will move forward, be it untied Sudan or defragmented one. Always the hater will go down and will stay down, forever.

  • Last time, i mentioned that Mbeki who was over thrown from power by Jacob Juma, because of corruption leadership in South Africa, was the leading beneficiary of president Bashir,s Bribes.

Thabo Mbaki is prostrated person, over thrown from power.AU leadership perpusely appointed him in search of its panel on dafur so as to save the interests of the head of the AU Mohammad Qaddafi, the president of Libya who heads the organization in the interest of the Arabs.

That was why i first named myself AU IN ARAB BLOOD in the Sudan tribune.

So, i am happy all i and many other users of Sudan tribune anticipated these right from the start of the investigation.

Thabo Mbeki is the first south Africa to register bias in the history of his country and who works for injustices in Africa.

Let the great African ancestries judge him and take care of him traditionally for his action of hiding sufferings in Darfur.

Haaaaaaa, today news with money and tomorrow free. I told the guys long ago that the agony of the poor poor people arround the world does not comtinue due to the continuation of the status-quo but due to cross of interests. Thabo Bin Mbeki the guy who is revenging on whatever is African because he grew up among Brotish whites where he always had inferiority complex. His venomous hate increated when he was removed from the power when he was about to sell all people of South Africa to the global durg cartels. Here today Mbeki turned on poor people of Darfur to sell them in a very cheap price because Bashir began to kiss his ass.

I don’t know what does America wait for to act as it claims to be the harbinger of the global peace. All wicked go to hell. Amen

AU panel lead by Mbeki was formally formed to protect e—Bashir from the the ICC. It is not a surprise that Mbeki is doing whatever in his disposal to to achieve the set target.

Shame on them.

    • These are truely free son’s of Africa , and not white-man shoe lickers. We know how Darfur problem was created , the West knows, and the Africans union knows and all of them know how it was amplified. They are going to solve it themselves, we will stick to our positioin of protecting our natiional intrest and national soverignity. We will never succumb to the greedy white man court.Darfur people are our people, they are part of us and we are part of them.

Where was the ICC when the whiteman enslaved all of Africa. Now they want to enslave us by remote control in the name of human rights! They always invent a moral cause for their evil causes .In the past they said they want to spread civilization , now human rights!

The world is changing, and there is a huge power and wealth shift towards the east.America owes CHina $ 2 trillions and they will watch very closely the interest of China.Africa is going to be the battle ground of investment.

The American policy in Sudan is also changing, and that is according to their own interest. It is not the policy of Gration or any individual but it is the American policy. The talk of the American charge-de-affairs in Khartoum, when he mentiioned that Darfur problem was exaggerated by the media in the US, Salva Kiir talk about secession was a pre-electioiin rhetoric and that they are going to open thier largest ever embassy in Africa in Khartoum, and the intensive pressure been put on the SPLA by Gration during his last visit which led the SPLA to request an urgent meeting with the NCP, just 2 days after he left Khartoum. All of this speak volumes about the changes in the American policy in Sudan.

America had tried everything to destabilize the government in Sudan, but things kept going forward and the country kept growing an anual gdp growth of about 10% the highest in Africa and one of the top ten growth in the world. This happend despite the sanctions , outside pressure and internal conflicts created by others.

America has huge interest in Sudan and particularly in NORTH SUDAN.For if their interest is in the South they would have separated the South long time ago! Ironically America opposes the secession of the South very strongly!Faced with the failure of the SPLA in the south and the hopeless situation in the South , America is forced not to wait among a fierce compition with China, Russia and interestingly , also France.Change of the regime is out of question paricularly after the miserable failure of their main ally, the SPLA, and the failures in Iraq and Afganistan. On top of that they do not have the money to do that.

America has to move very fast to secure it’s interest in NORTH SUDAN.This why is the intensive diplomacy .Sudan has being doing very well without them, despite all the problems, and is more in need to avoid their evil acts than to wait for their blessings.Never-the-less AMERICA is a huge power and player in the political arena, it can never be ignored. As long as we protect our national interest and soverginity , the way we are doing now, America is most-well-comed to invest in SUDAN.And they are coming!

WE SUDANESE ALWAYES HOLD OUR HEADS HIGH AND DO NOT FEEL THAT WE ARE SECOND CLASS HUMAN BINGS ANYWHERE AND AT ANYTIME.WE ARE ALWAYS FIRST CLASS.

2011 IS VERY CLOSE , WE ARE WAITING FOR THAT DAY WITH EAGERNESS.ONLY THOSE WHO WILL NEVER FEEL THAT THEY ARE SECOND CLASS CITIZENTS, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, WILL JOIN US.THOSE WHITE-MAN SHOE-LICKERS ARE NOT WANTED!!

FOR US UNITY WITH SPLA IS NOT ATTRACTIVE

        Dear Mohammed Ali,

I am much energized to comment on your ideas or arguments, however, before I do it, I would like to drop a word of thanking-you to a brother, AAMA, because people of his kind are the true sons of Sudan though they might carry Arabs’ genes. He is a true thinker of political, social and economical logics. Brother (Mohammed), I like your arguments about this article though, more than any other’s arguments because you have opened up the debate with a laid-professional rules. In deed, a very naive person or thinker might back off from your comments because this person (naive person) will fail to identify these utopial and unjustified arguments are based on very shaky grounds.

My dear brother, I will take you through many islands, which were created by Arabs and they are trying to mesh them together again. The islands I mean are: Sudan as an Islamic State, Sudan as Arabs’ State, Sudan’s natives as third class or no citizens and Then I will rebut the following in your arguments (comments): White-man shoe lickers, America owes China a 2 trillion dollars, SPLA, Iraq and Afghanistan’s failures, 10% of economy growth, the highest in Africa or in top 10 in the world and lastly American’s interest in the northern Sudan in the name of Sudan’s fate. Brother, you have many unjustified arguments of which if I comment on each one, I will end up writing volumes of books!! I will slightly touch them to show you that you’re just another victim of fault beliefs of Arabism and Islam.

Sudan as an Islamic State!! This statement sends down ill electrical feelings my spine, why do I have to have these feelings? I have them because the statement reflects a notion of Arabs’ selfishness. My dear brother if you still think this way then you are a very backward and uninformed guy because the Sudan is comprised of many religions and, even atheists are in Sudan. In your comments you are trying very hard to convey the ideas of Islam, however; I would like to remind you that there is nothing good about Islam, especially when extremists who wholly believe in themselves than Allah hold the Holy book up to convince other Muslims to be terrorists!! The true Holy Book(Qurah) of the most gracious and most merciful Allah is in the blood stained-hands of extremists so it’s nothing than just a history book. My dear brother stops your arrogance and you may convert me. In fact, Muslims of today don’t carry out the true ideology of Islam (Muslims brotherhood)!! Can you lie to me that you observe this ideology of brotherhood as a Muslim? If your tongue slips to say ‘yes’ then you will burn in hell because you are a stupid liar. What happened to Darfureans of who are 90% Muslims? The fact remains that it’s very much about skin-complexity then the religion issue.

Sudan as Arabs’ State!! Sudan to be an Arab’s State will be like heaven to be a devil’s hell. There will be no day that heaven will become a hell or hell a heaven. This applies to Sudan with Arab’s wishful thinking. My message to brothers (Arabs) is to take carry of their fellow Muslims such as Darfureans or some Nubians to show us (Christians, animists, or atheists) that you (Arabs) are capable of running the country as an Arab State. However, you are just day-dreaming and you need to wake up because the world is changing, not just changing but very fast and more importantly, Sudan’s natives are totally changing so Stupid, barbaric, senseless and backward rule such as ‘sharia’ law has no room in Sudan and is (sharia) well-fitting in hell.

Sudan’s natives as third class or no citizens!! This is Arabs’ thought. I have been talking in this article (my comments) of Arabs in their fragmentations such as religion (Islam), and being Arabs (race) but their worse is when they think of being better human beings in the world or better citizens of Sudan. I was astonished when I read a story about the origin of Arabs (people) and their marriage system of which a cousin can marry another cousin. Where am I taking you (reader and Mohammed)? You must know that I am going down to the roots of evils. Any Arab who is up to date with Arabs’ histories can know that all Arabs are Ishmael’s descendants, and Ishmael is Hagar’s son, Hagar, Sarah’s slave. I must tell you that there is nothing wrong with being descendants of a Slave but It’s stupid when you want to die a slave!! Arabs must know being arrogant make you stupid beings that cannot participate in the important debates. What’s wrong with originating from the same bloodline or from identical by descent (IBD)? It’s wrong genetically because all genes among offspring will be susceptible to homozygosity. Homozygosity is bad; with Arabs who are obsessed with being Arabs are very vulnerable to this condition. My dear brother (Mohammed), what is so great about being Arab? To me, there is nothing great except stubbornness that all Arabs seem to carry through their genes. You (reader or Mohammed) may be wondering or fail to get my point, however; if you’re not reading between the lines you must have known it (point) by now because I have been leading you through my point. My point is; there is no one with the names such as ‘second’ or ‘third’ or to make it worse, the boot-licker (shoe-licker- Mohammed’s term). You either be, a citizen of that country or you are a foreigner.

The Sudan’s fate, I would again take another step to give what I think is Sudan’s fate. I think no Sudanese is certain about Sudan’s fate, I mean Arab-Sudanese or Sudan’s native. Why is this so? It’s as such because people like Mohammed jumped into giving stupid arguments without acknowledging or touching the real issues of Sudan. What stupid arguments do I mean? Stupid arguments such as White-man shoe lickers, America owes China a 2 trillion dollars, SPLA, Iraq and Afghanistan’s failures, 10% of economy growth in Sudan, the highest in Africa or in top 10 of the world and lastly Americans’ interest in the northern Sudan. Yes I called these Homo sapiens’s dwarf’s arguments. Why do I have to defile my own brother (Mohammed)? I did this (defiled him) because he never understand the political world, he never understand the America as a driver; steering the world in the direction of its own interest!! My dear brother if you do know what happened in Iraq then you shouldn’t be talking as such, however, you are weak psychologically and politically. Don’t think I have forgotten about your phrase “shoe-licker”!! In the back of your mind you think you are referring to blacks( Sudanese), however, to me, you are referring to yourself. Why do I have to make this claim? I will take you back to the Iraq’s case study. Arabs lick whites’ boots more than any one else. In Iraq, there were these boots-lickers Arabs (Iraqis) who welcomed Americans by sucking their dicks to remove Saddam Hussein militarily. Is there one black man who welcomed Americans in Iraq? Not at all, Arabs and only Arabs called for military solution to remove Saddam. Brother, what is happening now in Iraq? Blood is shed every single day in Iraq. Those stupid, arse-holes who called for militarily removal of Saddam are now crying because of atrocities carried by insurgents and Americans and they want Americans to leave their country(Iraq). I gave you Iraq as a case study to know we (Sudan’s natives) are way ahead in this (world’s politics). However, your provoking statements such as America owes China heaps of dollars so they (Americans) will listen to China (China being against ICC charges against Bashir) or Its (America) interest in Northern Sudan, are hopeless. Hopeless like Saddam’s he said, “ If the father (Bush-senior) failed so will the son (Bush W). I will tell you that Sudan’s natives are aware of consequences of Military solutions so there will be no day they will support it in case of Sudan. You may ask me how you (Arabs) will know this. I want you to remember the master whom you were directly or indirectly, in one way or other involved in his death of ‘air crash’. You know I am talking of Dr. Garang; Garang didn’t call for America military involvement because he knew it all. This vision, his vision is still alive!! My dear brother I am coming to an end of my respond, I would like to tell you to stop the barbaric thinking and base your ideas on the solid grounds of truth and we (All Sudanese) will be united. Otherwise, there is no united Sudan. By the way there is nothing in Northern Sudan, the great plain, rainforest or oil holes are in the South Sudan so what is fuelling this economy growth in Northern Sudan, Sand dunes or something?

        Have a great day brother.

To others (Sudan’s natives) who engage in their stupid debates among tribes, this is the real debate, this is Arab’s perspective about Sudan, so get involved in this debate if you care and dare!!

  • What result did you expect from the "Chairman od the AU High Panel" Thabo Mbeki? Thabo Mbeki, brought down for corruption in South Africa, by south africans, then AU appoints him HIGH LEVEL CHAIRMAN, for DARFUR, this is incredible....The appointment of Thabo Mbeki proves that the African Union it self is corrupt and against humanity and equality, by appointing such persons as Mbeki and Ping.

I think the only time AU was efficient was when Haile Selasie was alive, and the spirt of Africa for Africans was genuine and not dictated by personal interests, corrupt personalities appointed, or selfish leaders elected to represent the AU. The AU leadership has to be changed, so as truth will be presented clearly to every one, without omitting any facts at the interest of few leaders, at the expense of poor people like the Darfuris, simple genuine africans and not arabs....

May God protect us from greedy and selfish leaders.

      • The Sudanese Arabs have implemented two interlocking strategies to gulvernise both Arab and African support for their successive Genocidal Governments:

        1) The active support of anti apartheid movements including sanctions against Apartheid South Africa.

        2) The incessant condemnation of Israel and the smuggling of weapons to the Palestinian terrorists.

This subtle and deceptive ploy portrays these mongrels as champions of justice thus blanketing them from any scrutiny of their genocidal activities against black Christians and Muslim Africans internally. This insidious plan help create anti western sentiments as a pretext to wage wars on non Arabs and blame them on the west.

        • Why millions of SOUTHERNERS still live so peacefully "much more safer than in the South" with Arabs and Jalabba in the north?

Why still hundreds of thousands SOUTHERNERS escape from the paradise of the NEW SUDAN IN THE SOUTH to the Arab and Jalabba in the north?

          reply

        • Well, Arabs of Sudan are Africans in the first place, just to put you in perspective, so it’s natural for them to be anti apartied, not for any reason other than they are true Africans who feel just the same about the continent as other Africans do. The thing that many can’t distinguish is that Sudan is also a part of the Arab family and this shouldn’t make them less or second class Africans or even feel less committed to African problems.

Black chrisitans and African muslim, together with afroarabs, more pure arabs, dark brown blacks, light brown black (or shall I say Africans??, because to me everybody here is African) ….. are all Sudanese (but this is what everybody fails to understand despite the fact that this is the vision of Garang), the south problem became more of a cultural problem while the Darfur problem and all the other current problems are pure politics with the potential to become cultural, just like the south one. That’s why many African leaders tend to support Sudan government, because it looks and smells like politics, just think about it. As long as we keep being racist to each other, we will never ever succeed either united, defragmented, north or south.
