November 11, 2009 (YAMBIO, WES) – Two Western Equatoria young girls abducted by the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army, LRA, have returned home, revealing details of their harrowing experiences and dangerous escapes.

The abductees are two teenage ladies, one of whom gave birth in the bush, fled the LRA during recent battles between the rebels and the Ugandan army in the jungles of Central African Republic.

The clashes followed the mid-December joint Ugandan, South Sudanese and Congolese offensive against LRA bases in the Garamba National Park in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, codenamed Operation Lightning Thunder.

The two abductees escaped from Central African Republic, where the Uganda People’s Defense Forces continue to hunt Kony and his men. However the attacks against have scattered to CAR

Together with their allies, the Ugandans have been pursuing the LRA fighters since their surprise attack on rebel camps in Garamba on December 14, 2008.

The attack failed to defeat the rebels, however, allowing them to rampage across the regions of Southern Sudan, DRC and CAR for the past 11 months, leaving thousands Congolese and South Sudanese civilians displaced, abducted and dead.

The escapees told Sudan Tribune that “LRA leader Joseph Kony is indeed in Central African Republic as their base was near to his, said Idie John, a 10-year-old former resident of the Western Equatoria sub-county of Mukuntu, who was abducted in Maridi during the Christmas of 2008.

Ms Siama Daniel who has given birth to a two years child said she was captured in Nabanga, near the border of Sudan-Congo corridor.

Siama said she was fed with looted food from the southern Sudan civilians, “I escaped during gun battle between the Uganda Army and the rebels and spent four days in the jungle with my beloved child.”

Likewise, Idie escaped during fire exchange between the rebels and the Ugandan Army, she spent 6 days in the dense forests of Central Africa, before crossing to the residential areas, “I appeared first to residents of CAR, who had taken me to the WES’s town of Tamnbura 150 miles from Yambio.”

“I was beaten several times in the bush by the rebels, because I failed to collect and carry the cooking saucepans when Ugandan Army attacked our base, out of a spate attacks on the rebels by UPDF is when they left me behind alone and I made my way from the captivity of LRA rebels,” said Idie.

“In the bush I witnessed some of the horrible atrocities of LRA rebels, which include beheading of young men, looting of food items from innocent civilians and burning of tukuls (local huts).

According to Siama, the LRA rebels in that base she was kept in, the rebels were few in number, citing their actions “cruel and callous”.

"I was near the base of Kony. When General Kony addresses his soldiers women are not allowed to attend his briefing, [we] were kept far away from him, however I saw him once."

She added that, “some times LRA rebels could claim to [us] that they have destroyed the allied forces sooner they will liberate Uganda.”

Mr. Justin Ebere Ginana is the State Director for Child Welfare, he says, “The State Ministry of Social Development is rehabilitating the former abductees with the hope of uniting them with their families.”

“[We] also counsel them from psychosocial and traumatic behavior changes, for their integration to the society,” said Ebere.

He further said that, the Directorate of Child Welfare has rehabilitated 26 former abductees so far in 2009.

“The abductees have a choice in choosing to remain in the Rehabilitation Centre or to join their families, as some of these children fear the stigma of living again in the communities which regard them the LRA rebels.

Gracia, a 12-year-old girl currently under rehabilitation and treatment in Yambio at Women Resource Centre (WRC), is one example. After being abducted, she was forced to walk to the LRA rear base in Central African Republic. However, after falling behind the main group of abductees, part of her foot was chopped off by a rebel commander to "teach her to walk properly." Luckily, she was found and rescued by the army.

LRA ABDUCTION, TORTURE, AND MURDER IN WESTERN EQUATORIA

Some child abductees have managed to escape their captors and tell of the extreme hardships they endured in the bush. They tell horrendous tales of suffering and extreme cruelty at the hands of their abductors.

As part of initiation into the rebel movement, abducted children are forced into committing inhuman acts, including ritual killings and mutilations. They tell of how they were forced to club to death other children who were not ’properly cooperating’ with the orders of rebel commanders.

"Some of the worst atrocities being committed against children are taking place in Western Equatoria, and the international community is nowhere to be seen," a frustrated farmer, John Mbikoyo of Buremanga Boma, told Sudan Tribune.

Abducted children also speak of a harsh and exhausting journey to Sudan, during which many die from hunger and exhaustion. Those who survive face even more inhuman conditions in training camps in Sudan, where many more die from starvation, disease, or injuries suffered in battle.

"Although some children like I die have returned, many are still missing," feared dead.

In Yambio neighboring villages, due to fear of abductions, parents in affected areas are forced to send their children to the relative safety of the towns, where they stay overnight in now most dense populated residences.

But there is a price to pay for this. Parents are often beaten cruelly, and in some cases brutally murdered, when rebels fail to find children in their homes.

Most women and girls who have been abducted and retained by the LRA are taken to serve as "wives" for the LRA commanders. Those who do not comply with the sexual demands made on them are beaten or killed. It is reported that many babies have been born in the LRA camps, and for those young women who would otherwise try to escape and return to their families, the social stigma of having become pregnant under such circumstances reportedly adds to their reluctance and fear to return home. A large part of the estimated 6000 missing children are presumed to be dead.

Despite the system of terror that reigns within the camps and the deadly punishment for showing disloyalty, children do escape from the LRA and make their way to freedom. A total of more than 100 such persons, including both adults and children, who have escaped in southern Sudan during the early 2009 reprisals attacks from LRA in WES, have escaped. Most of those individuals are small children or women and babies who were born in the camps and escaped with their mothers. Most of the remaining adolescents and adults spent from two to four years in the camps before escaping.

  • Foolish Logic Boy,

You should go and defend your people against LRA instead of wasting time uttering nonsenses on the website.

I thanks the little brave girls for escaping that horrific life of LRA. We the mighty Dinka will protect you if allowed to stay in Equatoria.

    • LEADERSHIP CRISIS IN NUER COMMUNITY:

Today, it’s worrisome that the greater Nuer community is full of politicians and severely short on leaders. It’s even more troublesome that some of the self-proclaimed leaders, the like of one of the Islamic National Front darling golden boys, Riek Gai Kok and the so-called professor, David de Chand, are pouring venom into the good name and reputation of the Nuer people, who neither elected them, nor authorized them to sell the South on their behalf.

Clearly, there is a thick line between a politician and a leader. Tavis Smiley, a nationally syndicated TV and Radio personality in the African-American community said that: " Leadership is not an " I " proposition. It’s a " you " proposition. When you do that, the public elevates you. They give you their trust. They hold you accountable.

Southern Sudanese are all too familiar with Reik Gai Kok and David de Chand, particularly the former. Who would have forgotten the statement he made, a few years ago - standing along side Dr. Ammer Mussa, the Secretary General of the Arab League, when he claimed that: " Southern Sudan is part and parcel of the Arab and Islamic Nation.

Mr. Kok, who continues to allow himself to play the role of the cleaning boy of the dirty under gourmands of his lovers in the terrorist regime of tyrant Omar Al Basheer, made a similar claim- just three weeks ago, in Alray Alaam Arabic daily newspaper, that: " The Dinka land of Abyie, belongs in the Northern Sudan.

Now, what do the Nuer people think about this crime being committed by someone with an adjective of a Nuer leader? Isn’t shameful that one of us would utter such a deadly calling that not even our worst adversaries will never dare repeat? how about the general rule that says: If a crime is being committed in front of you and, you do not do anything about it, that you are intact as guilty as the criminal as well? And why - in the World - would the Nuer community allows these people to roam around ripping apart the Nuer reputation and good name?

Riek Gai Kok has every right to go to bed and spend the knight with whomever he pleases. But he must do so under his own name, and the Nuer people out of it all.

Concerning the so-called professor David de Chand- just look at how he calls himself. This’ a guy who can not even read his own hand-writing. His logic-respectively, is that of a fifth-grader. I live here in Atlanta, Ga. where he claims to have had obtained his questionable PH.D. Please don’t take my words for it. But any Southerner, Nuer in particular, who were here during that time, know the whole truth about it. I plan to bring that to the open in the very near future.

Nuer community needs to pull together one more time. We, and only we, are the ones to look after our good name and reputation. And in this case, we didn’t.

That is exactly what has been happening. Dr. Riek Machar used a wise strategy of lulling, councelling and dragging to peace the LRA to neutralize the war support they get from the NCP. However a bunch of sabbateurs within the SPLM/A sabbataged the Uganda peace process which almost concluded. Two years of peace process witnessed relative peace and significant reduction of LRA violent activities. But the peace spoilers who were jealous about the achievement by Dr. Machar sabbottaged the process. They kept calling Joseph Kony telling him that Riek Machar conspired with Yoweri Museveni to hand Kony over to ICC once he signed the peace. Kony then refused to sign the final peace agreement. Now the result is still ugly.

Why would you side with LRA that is completely invading your mother land? Those children are the future of that country South Sudan. They were deprived out of their rights in their own land with nothing wrong they done to LRA. That mentality of hatred and incapability to differentiate the reality and joke is much more shamefull. I can’t believe even Jalaba in Khartoum can response the way you have done it, you pretended that your response reflecting the conflict between Equaterians and Dinka which i cannot belief at all. And by the way, Can you tell this forum what do you mean by telling logic to go and defend his people? And can you tell this forum what is the conflict between Dinka and equaterians that may trigger that poor response from you? who are you then if not South Sudanese foolish villager who know only how to write but cannot comperhend the issues that are matter in the nation. There is No even single Dinka can side with you in that evil thinking. You better apologise otherwise God will curse you. May God bless those children who have experiencing brutality from those hopeless LRA! LRA plays game of no where but infliction of pain on my people. Forcing a child to committ crimes of killing people is not acceptable by any mean. Konyi deserve a brutal torture if capture alive. If i could communicate with those who are suffering in the bush. I would advice them to disobey Konyi when they are asked to come and look for food, they should surrender to come home and be forgive for what they have done. It is not what they want but they did it as the only choice to escape the death. Weak GOSS is not protecting the WES people, stroops must be deployed to patrol the areas in WES for the safety of every civilians.

Dinka Communities did solve their own problems without asking government help for example the Arab army Tribes in Northern Bhar al Ghazal have been fighting with Dinkas civilians in many years, why not you guys defending your communities. Wsetern Equatoria appeared to practices the discrimination on Dinka after signing peace agreement while Dinkas SPLA fighters were they one who captured all Wsetern Equatoria State and they forgotten us what we did to them, but this debating will be remain to be seen after our Southern Sudan Independence.

Mr. Kony need is now a man of no family. NORAH Anek Oting, the mother of LRA leader Joseph Kony, is dead.

Anek, 86, passed away at Mulago hospital in Kampala on Tuesday night after she succumbed to cardiac failure and lung disease, the hospital spokesperson, Eliphaz Sekabira, said.

Anek, who was a resident of Mukono district, had been admitted to Mulago in the afternoon. By press time, the body was still at Mulago mortuary.

In March 2008, Anek was admitted at the executive wing of Mulago Hospital where she underwent diabetic treatment.

She was under the guardianship of State House and the Government was meeting her medical bills.

Gulu RDC Walter Ochora, who worked closely with Anek during the Juba peace talks, said he had received a telephone call from State House informing him of her death.

He said burial arrangements were underway in Lalogi sub-county in Gulu district.

Ochora noted that Anek must have died a disappointed woman after Kony refused to sign a peace agreement despite her advice.

He recounted that when Kony asked to meet his mother, he convinced President Yoweri Museveni to allow her travel to Garamba.

He said the President, who was worried about Anek’s health, offered two PGB guards, a doctor and an assistant, Juliet Obina, to travel with the elderly lady.

Ochora recalled that during the 12 days Anek spent with her son, she appealed to him to sign for peace, reminding him that Museveni had looked after his parents during his absence.

“Your father died and Museveni buried him. Do you want him to bury me too in your absence?” Ochora quoted Anek as saying.

Anek gave birth to Kony in 1962 in Odek village, Gulu district. The two got separated in 1989 when Kony, then 26, launched a military offensive against the NRM Government.

The atrocious rebellion raged for close to two decades, devastating northern Uganda, Southern Sudan and later Eastern Congo where Kony fled in 2005.

Anek was one of the relatives who visited Kony in Garamba as a confidence building measure during the peace talks. The emotional meeting between mother and son, after 17-years of separation, took place on December 9, 2006.

“I have come with a message of peace. The people want peace. I am asking you to make peace out of this process,” Anek told her son.

In response, Kony who hailed Museveni for facilitating his mother’s travel to Garamba, promised peace.

“Truly, mummy, now that you are here, I believe the message you brought. And there will be peace. We also want it,” Kony reportedly replied.

However, he backtracked on his promise and refused to sign of the peace agreement.

Earlier, in May 2006, she told The New Vision in an interview that she did not understand what was wrong with her son or what he was fighting for.

“I was perplexed to see him do the things he did: the war, the killings, the abductions. I didn’t know I would produce such a child. I don’t understand what he is fighting for.” Why is Kony Fighting, if your own mother doesn’t know you what you are fighting for? You need to come and sign the peace and leave our Southerners Alone
