November 5, 2009 (LONDON) – A Sudanese army battalion from the military intelligence division at the border patrol has defected and joined rebels ranks, the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) said today.
JEM claimed that a platoon headed by Brigadier General Khamis Adam Mohamed Idriss nicknamed ‘Sharon’ joined the movement along with 14 officers and 200 foot soldiers.
The statement said that the battalion was tasked with clearing the areas North of El-Geneina in West Darfur from its inhabitants particularly in Jabal moon region.
Describing the defection as an “outstanding new victory” said that the defectors “made the right patriotic choice” and urged other army units to follow suit “to defend the legitimate rights of their people”>
“This is not their war but that of an isolated regime alone that ended up in the International Criminal Court (ICC) and it is an inevitably ailing regime” the statement reads.
