October 18, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese government said today that two female aid workers abducted in Darfur last July have been freed.
The two women working with the Irish GOAL, Hilda Kawuki, 42, from Uganda, and Sharon Commins, 32, from Ireland were kidnapped from their compound in North Darfur town of Kutum by six armed men.
"They were released earlier this morning," Sudan’s state minister for humanitarian affairs, Abdel Baqi al-Jailani, told Reuters.
Ireland’s Foreign Affairs Minister Micheal Martin told BBC he was "delighted and relieved" to hear the two volunteers had been freed.
