Egyptian FM defends Sudan’s military campaign in Darfur

September 30, 2009 (WASHINGTON) — The Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Aboul-Gheit defended the actions of Sudan since the rebels in Darfur took up arms in 2003 against the central government on claims of marginalization.

The conflict led to what the UN described as the “world’s worst humanitarian crisis” that led to the death of more than 300,000 people and displacing millions across Darfur.

“What happened in Sudan was a civil war and an attempt by the Sudanese Authority to impose itself on the ground against a threatened rebellion,” Aboul-Gheit told the London based Al-Hayat newspaper in an interview.

The Egyptian reiterated his country’s rejection of the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for the Sudanese president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir for his role in orchestrating the military campaign in Darfur.

“The accusation [against Bashir], the African Union (AU) has rejected it. The AU is the highest authority in Africa. The Arab League rejected it. Egypt does not agree to it. Why? Because we see there is a politicization of this decision,” Aboul-Gheit said.

Furthermore, the Egyptian top diplomat stressed that executing the arrest warrant is not binding to non-ICC state parties including his country.

“When a resolution is issued by the Security Council under Chapter VII we shall be committed to it. As long as no such resolution has been issued, this remains an accusation by the Prosecutor-General. The ICC decision is not obliging to any party that is not a member in this court. This is the position that we have adopted at the Arab League and that the African Union adopts. It is not an Egyptian position only. We are not committed by anything in which we are not members. We are not members in the court,” he said.

Asked why the Arab states wants the ICC to investigate the Gaza war earlier this year but at the same time don’t want it to prosecute Bashir Aboul-Gheit said that the events are different in terms of a civil war in Sudan versus Israeli attacks on Gaza strip.

He said that Egypt will support Palestinian efforts to try Israeli suspects before the ICC “because it is the right of the Palestinian people”.

Aboul-Gheit said Egypt’s stance is not contradictory because he “doubt very much that the court will adopt measures against what Israel did along the pattern of what happened with Sudan”.

“I am not in the process of defending the Sudanese Authority, but I see that there is politicization of that case,” he said.

Since Bashir was indicted by the ICC he made two visits to Egypt in defiance of the arrest warrant and met with his counterpart Hosni Mubarak.

Egypt along with other Arab countries has categorically rejected the arrest warrant calling on the UN Security Council (UNSC) to defer it for 12 months under the Rome Statute provisions.

Many people in the Arab world view the ICC as practicing double standards in selecting cases against third world countries while turning a blind eye to what they view as war crimes committed by US or Israel.

Last March the Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa rejected suggestions that the pan-Arab organization is taking conflicting positions with regard to crimes committed in Sudan’s Western region of Darfur and the Gaza ones.

“What is happening in Darfur is a semi-civil war and its responsibility is shared by many parties” the Arab League Secretary General said.

“The arrest warrant [by the ICC] is against a sitting president but what is occurring in Palestinian us a military occupation responsible for all that is committed on the ground” he added.

Egypt, which is carrying out an initiative trying to unify Darfur rebels, has in the past claimed that the conflict is exaggerated.

Last month the powerful Secretary General of the ruling Democratic National Party (DNP) in Egypt Safwat Al-Sharif said that the Darfur crisis is an “artificial” one directed against the people of Sudan.

In 2004 the UNSC formed a UN commission of inquiry to look into Darfur abuses headed by former President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) Italian Antonio Cassese.

The commission, which included a former Egyptian official, concluded that the government did not pursue a policy of genocide in the Darfur region but that Khartoum and government-sponsored Arab militias known as the Janjaweed engaged in “widespread and systematic” abuse that may constitute crimes against humanity.

Egyptians control over sudan will soon come to a stop.

Nile river is not in Darfur and no way seems possible to let Egypt control over it in the south of sudan whatever threat.

Egypt should start praying for dangerous water thirst encroaching into her new history.

Egypt had been waging a race war on the African continent for more then a century. Who can be surprise to hear that Egypt is supporting a criminal regime in Kartoum as they did in 1950s against Southern sudanes. This time round africa is ready for a race war with the arabs. Africa has supported the hunging of Saddam Husein, Invasion of Afganistan, power to Israel, south sudan, Darfur, Nuba Mountains, Ingessenna and the fact that arabs are committing genocide against African muslims in Darfur. guys, this is a race war, lets it go ahead. It is the arabs conspiracy to kill off the Africans on their continent who will doubt that. Lets hit and hit hard we are strong and we have the backing of our powerful allies in the World. People of African descend including President Obama and Ambassador Susan Rice and all Africans worldwide will deny Egypt funding from the USA. Egypt is just a client state to the USA. Its a nation of beggers because they have no fertile land or natural resources, they just depends on begging America for its tax payers dollars. No more Dollars for Egypt from America, egypt will starve and they must kneel down as they have always been doing to America. worshiping America and begging with their asses as a movie. now that its is clear they have launched a race and religious bigotry war, Egypt is done, it is over where is South Africa and Nigeria to see this race card. No more water from our African Nile to Egypt the be dammned thirsty. If it means what, we will do and make sure Egypt is thoroughly defeated with it racism. We in south Sudan are free to welcome anyone including our brothers from America, Israel, Canada, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Uganda. South Africa and tanzania to come and stay and do business in South Sudan. We do not need aproval from Arabs in Kartoum or Egypt.sure we will do and we will.

Mohamed Adam, you had not read and understand my message either because of your shear jellaba ignorant, illiteracy, think-mindness, stupidy or your ordinary jellaba anit semitism. When your Arabs in Arab world and jellaba in Sudan spot the name of Israel you are freak out and start pissing uncontrollably like you genitally mutilated mothers and sisters. I did not tell you that we are and will cut of South Sudan from North so that we beg anyone. We are southerners are blessed then you jellaba and that is why our land is the most fertile on the African continent making it the envy of the Arab world. What do you have in North Sudan except your females relatives to fuck? we have oil, uranium, diamond, gold and manganese plus the most fertile land on Earth that you can even grow salt and must grow. Take note dude, North sudan needs South Sudan then we needs you, it is so pity to see the situation in North Sudan because you have none while we have everything and we can welcome any self respecting citizens from around the World to do business as you do in Khartoum you welcomed all these products of incests from the Arab world of Saudia Arabia, Qatar, Bharain, Egypt, Libya and Syria. The above dirts are now in Kartoum having six with their sisters, nieces and mothers as their wives. I have the lowest opinion on the Arabs. America was right to go to the middle East to hang Saddam and occupy Iraq and Israel is also right to deny Palestinians freedom because Arabs are animals who must be civilized by Jews and Christians.

          • Adam, traditionally Africans respect other human beings that is how arabs got into Sudan. All we are asking is a peacefull coexistance between people and respect with a knowledge that no one is less equal regardless of race, creed, or religion. That minister should not support any killing of inocent civilians despite who is behind the killing.

              • Yes, you might not committed to what you are not members in as per rules and international legislations, yet you could take an impartial stance instead of endorsing and reasoning the genocidal act conducted by Bashir in Darfur, in fact all Arab, Islamic and most African states are currency with the same face, rationalizing act of genocide and ethnic cleansing like of Darfur is against the rules of creations and humanity, but let me tell you Hypocrite Arabs and Muslims, the ICC is real and Bashir is going to face the consequences of his actions wither you rationalized it or not, to hell with you all!

Arab and their like are doing more harm to Bashir than good by encouraging him not to cooperate with ICC court or turn himself in before being caught like rat. However, they will not help him when the thing come to the reality like what happened to Saddam Hassien.Hassien was caught and hanged alone with no help from any dog or these who called selves fake Arab, but they were cry like divorced woman. It’s a matter of time but this criminal will be caught and put in electric chair to taste how deliciously it is to kill human being. On Zuma and other African leaders must prevent this criminal from putting his dirty feet on other Africans land. He deserved nothing less then severe punishment. Arab no nothing than to terrorize people but they should by now know that their terrorist does not shake anybody.
