Former rebels say opposed to increase Darfur states

June 24, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — Darfur former rebel Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) of Minni Minnawi refused any move to increase the number of the three Darfur states saying such move breaches the signed peace agreement.

Sudanese Presidency announced that Omer Al-Bashir would receive on Wednesday a report on the increasing of the number of Darfur states by a committee he had formed last January.

The SLM-MM signed Darfur Peace Agreement on May 5, 2006 with the Sudanese government. The Abuja deal provides to maintain the three states of the troubled province during the transitional period and to run a referendum on the establishment of one regional authority after.

Only Darfur people have to decide on this issue in accordance with the DPA, said the SLM-MM spokesperson Seif Eddin Harun who stressed such decision would violate the 2006 peace agreement.

Pro-government press mentioned the possibility to establish two new states (Bahr Al-Arab and Zalengei). Ahmed Hussein Adam the spokesperson of the rebel Justice and Equality Movement accused the government of intending to create the two states on ethnic bases.

Bahr A-Arab would be dedicated to the Rizzaygat Arab tribe while Zalenei would be established in the homeland of Fur tribe.

The resolutions of a large consultation forum on the solution of Darfur conflict held last November included also a recommendation to review the current administrative division of Darfur in order to avoid tribal tensions.

This is how a dying monopolistic of power works, and one would like to say that Arabs created more problems that would not be easy to solve for Arabs were leading all the Sudan for the last 50 plus years but now that they see natives are ready to take on their affairs, they just do not want to be under anybody else. So, it’s upto they Darfurians to wake up!
