Ngundeng’s family elders dismiss accusations against Machar

By James Gatdet Dak

May 21, 2009 (JUBA) - Ngundeng Bong’s family elders have dismissed, as baseless, complaints raised against the Government of Southern Sudan’s Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, on reception of the Prophet’s Rod (Dang) which was returned to Southern Sudan on 16th May after more than 80 years in England.

The Rod was stolen by the British colonial administration from the Prophet’s headquarters of Bieh at Wec Deang near Waat, Jonglei state, in 1927.

A number of Ngundeng’s grandsons and granddaughters led by an SPLA officer, Colonel James Lony Thichiot, held a press conference in Juba on 18th May, accusing the Vice President of conducting the sacrifices surrounding the return of the Rod.

Thichiot said the Vice President could not qualify to carryout the sacrifices since he had no scarifications on his forehead – a six-line traditional Nuer cutting on the forehead that symbolize the age of manhood of a male – and has become the rule to conduct sacrifices.

Thichiot, who himself does not carry the forehead traditional cuttings, also accused Vice President Machar of politicizing the return of the Prophet’s Rod two days after Machar received it.

In response by a telephone call from Bentiu, Unity state, where he has been participating in the kings and chiefs conference, Machar reportedly said Thichiot is an SPLA officer who had no right to interfere in political affairs that concern the whole people of Southern Sudan to whom the returned Rod belongs.

Machar on the day the Rod was returned explained that it would be taken to Bieh after necessary arrangements have been made, and that the Rod must be kept in a national archive that would be constructed soon.

The Director for Archives, Professor Sevenino Mati, reportedly died a few days before the return of the historic Rod.

However, in a press release signed by an elder grandson of Ngundeng, Honorable Gai Lel Ngundeng, the Prophet’s family elders said they were disturbed by the attitude shown by the younger members of the family in regard to the reception of the divine Rod.

“The leadership of the family of Prophet Ngundeng is hereby addressing misunderstandings created by young boys and girls of the family in regard to the reception of the Prophet’s divine Rod on May 16, 2009. The family elders and leaders are disturbed by the Press Conference conducted by teenage family members in Juba accusing the Vice President of the Government of Southern Sudan with unfounded allegations,” said the statement.

The statement explained that the sacrifices conducted in Juba under the auspices and jurisdiction of the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) headquarters were done in the right way and that they are also different from the sacrifices to be conducted at the Prophet’s headquarters at Bieh.

“Based on the tradition of the family, there is nothing wrong for somebody who is not initiated on his forehead to kill a bull as long as it is done outside the jurisdiction of the Holy Land [Bieh or Wec Deang]. Although Riek Machar is not initiated unlike Salva Kiir whom the Nuer would regard as a man because he is scarified on his forehead, still the rules of killing the bull do not apply to a bull sacrificed in Juba, the seat of GoSS,” the statement explained.

“The family would like to inform the people of South Sudan that those ‘minors’ who called a press conference in Juba on May 18, did not represent the leadership of the Ngundeng’s family. The allegations they raised against the Vice President of GoSS are baseless and do not represent the views of the family leadership,” it further stated.

The press release, which was also published by a number of South Sudan-based newspapers, suspected elements of political leaders to be behind the move of the minors to complaint against the Vice President.

“We therefore warn those who want to politicize the homecoming of Dang to settle grudges with Riek Machar to refrain from inciting minors against the agents of the GoSS for receiving the Rod,” stated the press release.

“The arrangements for the final return of the Rod to Bieh are being conducted between the leadership of the family and the agents of the Government of the South. When all the arrangements are complete, a ceremony will take place at Wec Deang where the family and various South Sudan community leaders will receive the GoSS delegation that would return the Dang to its rightful place where it was looted by the British,” it concluded.

The statement congratulated President Salva Kiir Mayardit and his government for honoring the Prophet. It also congratulated Professor Douglas Johnson for his “tireless and voluntary” work to return the Rod.

The Rod, believed to be about 150 years old, received a jubilant homecoming welcome on 16th May where thousands of people converged at Juba airport, then followed by colorful celebrations at the residence of the Vice President.

In his remarks to the more than 1,500 kings and chiefs during the opening of the conference in Bentiu, Unity state, the First Vice President of Sudan and President of the Government of Southern Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, reportedly explained that Ngundeng’s Rod was a historic symbol of resistance to oppression by the people of Southern Sudan.

Ngundeng did not have any direct contact with any modern government administration, but among his prophecies which he composed in form of songs he predicted the coming of rol-mac (colored people with guns), the North-South civil war and independence for the South.

The respond from Ngundeng’s family elders is very encouraging and amazing for the fact that they hit the point. The political controversy mongers who infested the minds of those kids in Juba with lies, are now burying their heads in the sand with shame. Prophet Ngundeng Bong (Gat Nyayiel) is for all our people in Southern Sudan and other marginalized parts of Sudan. Trying to make tribalism, regionalism and clanism out of historical return of his looted Rod (Dang) to people of Sudan in general and Southern Sudanese in particular, is not going to work as his elder descendants point out. NGundeng spoke of battles in songs by mentioned the names of villages where they would took place and they all come true. He mentioned our late leaders Dr.John Garang and William Nyuon Bany by names.

Once again, congratulations to our people for getting back their looted property.

Thanks you mr Rambang[gatDeang].Ngundeng should be a prophent if all his prophencies has been follow by Nuers from whom he belongs.look now lou Nuer have been changing the words of Ngundeng to be theirs in which they are proud of them to kill others,is that the fact told by Ngundeng? i guess not.iam much worry about no end war between lou nuer and jikany nuer which is caused by the defaction of Dr Riek from SPLA\M and not solved by the re-unification of Dr Reik to SPLA\M.now let those who claim to be Ngundeng decedents pray for their Ngundeng to stop that war and stop lou from diverting their ancestor Ngundeng’s words into war to kill others in south sudan.

Should the South rely on Ngundeng(Ngungoth) or Jesus?

This is all bullshit, why are the Nuers bothering the whole south of Sudan with this Ngungoth nonesense.

Why should any sane person cancel the 16th may celebration because of the rubbish?

Forget, it is purely nonesense, perhaps devilish.

It was a confusion about how and who can receive the Dang be someone from the GoSS, Prophet’s family member or any one who may be appointed anywhere. Now, it is well understand that, the young boys & girls within Prophet’s family were acted alone without consulting the elders who really know the difference between the GoSS officials and traditional way of doing things.

At the Holy land call Bieh where Dang will be kept, big celebration is going to be conducted after the Naath ethnic group get ready for the reception of all communities across South Sudan. It’s going to be a day when all walks of life in the Sudan especialy in the South will remember for the rest of their lives.

No wonder about which community that will take the 2nd chance afte the Naath community during that wonderful celebtration, with no doubt, Anyuak community must be the one since the great Blacksmith who made NgunDeng’s Tony was from that community. Yet the tough question still remains, how long that welcoming of NgunDeng’s Dang celebration will last and how many bull/cows will be slaughtered on those days?

Come all and celebrate the coming of Dang to Holy land/Bieh where it belongs before it was looted by the invaders.

    See you all there.

      Hi Friends,
Welcome Ngundeng nobody in Southern Sudan will objects or against this Rod is our traditional believe but one thing is this. Will this Rod of Ngundeng make Nuer to believe more and more and forgive one another toward other communities in Southern Sudan? If yes then that will be wonderful thing and well celebrate to you all including me. “No wonder about which community that will take the 2nd chance after the Naath community during that wonderful celebration, with no doubt, Anyuak community must be the one since the great Blacksmith who made NgunDeng’s Tony was from that community”. When the day come for celebration for Dang go in any of the shop were you are and buy glass of wine and celebrate for Ngundeng no doubt many people will be death that day wait and see.
I mentioned yesterday Bull Nuer, had looted thousands of cows in Warrap State and kill many people including children and also in Bor too and nothing been return to them up to now. I think they are going to slaughters those thousands of Dinkas Bulls which they were stealing from Dinkas in Warrap State what a shocking, horrible and indignity things to do. Is this is a sin or no? What the different between stealing someone cows and corruption people accusing government for? We are all happy to welcome our traditional Ngundeng Rod and cultures believe in heritage but people still behaviours like mads Lions to eat people. I remember when I was young boy not like this guy call himself boy which is a Dhalmodit without forehead (little boy) saying non sense yesterday defending Nuer Bull without knowing the consequences that may arise between Bull Nuer and Dinka Warrap State soon or later. I was told many story about Ngundeng dreams some maybe seen nowadays as a true stories.
Hey, Isaac Treter, you are really Nuer guy and I appreciated your commons even though there were bit insults unbelieve my words.
Dang had came into the Holy land of Southern Sudan and /Bieh where is going to end. My best friends since I was in the busy and here in Juba are Nuer guys until now but one thing make me disappointed is the attitudes some people are still carry out toward poor people to kill them with no justification and invaders their belonging and take them away.
Thanks, Nygundeng oyee and SPLA/M and Goss oyee….

        Yes, My Friend Manthok Loda.

You seem to understand things now, but i would like to omit one thing which your mouth is not failing to talk about; the negative attitude of yours toward the Bul - Nuer, they have retaliated raiding cattles from Warrap because the Cattle belonging to Gatdeang were raided by your people in Warrap early last months, have you not heard that? i believe you did, but remember Bul - Nuer are strongest and fighters as i told you yesterday, but they don,t just rush to steal or rob somebody ’s things before you touch their belongings just like your people in Warrap have been doing to them during the war until now.

I told you yesterday that Bul - Nuer are our people in the South they have protected your people from Arabs invasions during the war that is why they are still in their territory as your are but matters related to cattle can be for the people and the government to bring a solution to it.

Your words about Bul - Nuer and Warrap Dinka people over cattle raidings can never be the solutions since i now figure you out as somebody amongst the cattleraiders living at the cattle camps, and Bul - Nuer people have the right to retaliate if the government or your people failed to returns the cattle which your people in Warrap have stolen or readed.

The issue of cattle is a problems to those who rear them as well to the gov,t because it bring insecurity to the States borderig each other but if we can try to figure a solution to such a problem for our people of the two states to live in peace and share the bordering land for cattle pastures and water, there has to be an agreement between the two state governors and their commisioners to return any cattles raided by the communities who raid cattles amongst themselves and their has to be ties to be put down for every community to follow.

Now would your advise be about siding your people Dinka in Warrap against Bul - Nuer or bring an advise which could be the solutions to the cattle raiding problems to the two neighbhouring States? Please think again if you wants to solve conflict rather than to instigate it.

If you will continue talk like that then you be pointed out as somebody who instigates conflicts, So do,t temper for Bul - Nuer ’s rights.

Concerning celebration for the returns and reception of the rod Dang i believe our culture advise us to kill a cow in any such event like this one, but your negative and young minded attitude think the cow which will be kill is a Dinka cow brought or raided from Warrap by Bul - Nuer, I can say yes because it is a cow which was last time raided or stolen by your Dinka Warrap people from their neighbouring Bul - Nuer, God will not Curse them to do that since it is their recognised cow once raided by your people.

So please don,t talk uncommon sense out here again.

          Hi Issac Terter,

I would like to acknowledge that you have been quick a lot since my absence. I think your points are irrelevance to my points because Bull Nuer went out last Sunday as I stated to you yesterday. I witness one thing this year in Warrap State when the General James Bang from Nuer Army was held a meeting in Warrap State and given a task to deploy 500 solders or more along the boarders between Nuer and Dinka. I was presented during the arrangement which was a positive sign by the government. Citizens were confident and assuring by the general James that there will be no war any more or conflicts between these communities.

I was very happy indeed knowing that peacefully living for our people is the only way forward and our live safer as a wonderful communities in Southern Sudan. Looks you I will not denial your points of unwelcome incidences that might had happen this year in your area by raiding cows by Dinkas in Warrap State maybe. This incident in Apuk last weekend was not similar at all, the General Anthony Bol Madut has lose 900 cattle been taken through this causes. Do you think the problem will stop to not happen again? If that we will be the solution for these animals ok than I maybe wrong friend. I don’t believe in those animals live, they are once letting us down not to get education quickly until this time of in our centenary we remain here in this planet with all these marking faces and negative cultures of stealing unbelonging to you which is since from God.

You have been talking about your Nuer Bull defending Warrap people during the war time well we were all fighting for our freedom as for the nation of Southern Sudan and we were defend you too. So we thank one other but each of us killing ourselves would not be acceptable at all and not bring any solution to us. Please don’t talk about Bull Nuer fighters do you believe Dinkas of Warrap are not fighters as well? Fighting is our attitude and we never get satisfy or get enough for it. You might say that I am young minded but no you don’t even know me I maybe older than you mate - Issaac.

I believe that we keep fighting because of these animals and at the end we will never benefits from them. I am giving you solutions to pass on to ourselves and communities so that we can assist these poor people. We will wait and see what the government solution would be to protect these communities of loving animals. Suggestions to Nuers and Dinkas people of Southern Sudan. They solution is to sell these animals away into the market to be BBQ and forget all of what so call cows that is the only way out. Please read my commons sense carefully and knowing the trust words will never be hiding from God.

      Wooow Mr.Kuol,
What are you saying? I can’t believe your telling Toposa boy this craft evil beleif of Nuer should also attain respect in every part of South Sudan. Do you woship ngundeng,or Machar? What ever!!!!. But not Toposa boy as his name identifies him, so stop threatening him of your bulshit. South Sudan is soon becoming a nation, how can some one like Macher be a president. He is not a stable and focus leader, who stands on his own whether in difficulties or not. We the Southern Sudanese don’t want, to wake up one morning to find that he has decided to join his former husband El Bashir, as he did before. Every Southerner including you know that. I personally think that Kirr is far better than him. If Kirr thinks that some one should take from him, it should be some one different. As for the two guys you mentioned before, they were paying their price for all the evil things they did to the poor South Sudanese, by embessaling funds which are supporse to be used to help the needy children, women, and eldely. Machar is not God, so he can be critisazed by his masteres. A good leader call the citizens his masters, and should accept any critism in any way, more especially in situation like the one in South Sudan, where Macher and his government has embessaled all the public funds. They deserve to get all short of reactions from the citizens, and should not use their guns to kill who ever critized them.
God should punish them for killing innocent, rape and embessament.

Hey Mr Feign Dr Riak Machar Teny,

Your point of view is very realistic and frankly know by other Southern Sudanese and that is why you don’t want to comply with Sixteen May. What does Rod of Ngundeng has to do with freedom by the way? Riak Machar Teny, you better first of all think about the mess which you have made in the past 18 years ago. Instead of you to do good things to your people, then you are still exasgerating the incident of the past in down low. Riak Machar Teny, be perfect at this time because people are watching at you. For instance, in 1997, you signed the peace Agreement with Khartoum Government without the consent of the SPLM/SPLA. That example makes everybody aware that you are not fully to be trusted as a righteous leader who can manicipated the people from the hardship life. Riak Machar Teny, you better seceded or make things go smooth for the seek of the other people who need to be free from atrocities.

Mr Riak Machar Teny, can you exactly give a brief explanation to the Southern Sudanese on how Ngundeng Bong’s rod will bring freedom to the Southern Sudanese people? Mr Riak Maachar Teny, even if you dishonored sixteen May, still SPLM/SPLA has it firm wings around the corner. Whether you neglected SPLM/SPLA, you will still believes it in the future event. If you was a sophisticated leader who deserve to work in order to free your people, then you shouldn’t be able to make a schedule for Ngundeng Bong’s rod to be brought during the time of sixteen May which is a National Day to the whole Southern Sudanese. It mean that your point of view of making separation from the SPLM/SPLA on 8/28/1992, is still in your own ideology and that is why you absolutely rejected the Sixteen May to be celebrated on the exactly day in which it is supposed to be done. If you really know the significant of the Sixteen May, then you should be able to extended that Ngundeng Bong’s rod to be brought after Sixteen May is over.

Lastly, how are we going to trust ourselves ladies and gentlemen if our righteous leaders don’t think beforehand? Should we followed them or should we retreated our shoulders back? Believe me or not, there is big mess coming behind us. I don’t know exactly when should Southern Sudanese people sits and enjoyed the aspirational life which the fought for? For your information, if you feels that something touch your feeling through what I write in my comment, please forgive me and don’t feel hesitate to quote me back.

    Thanks you a lot.

It is very sad to see New Sudan vision falling apart as Riek Machar’s ambitions plan to dishonoured the May 16, by replace it with the so call Rod or evil. Dr Riek is restless leader who can use all means to get the leadership of the South whom he betrayed for long when he was collaborating with Arabs north and worked tirelessly against the South Sudan vision. Machar think after Bor massacres that collaborating with El Bashir and Konyi of LRA as the fought against the SPLA would make him the leader of the South and that Bashir and Konyi would help him to achieve that vision. After the failure of the Khartoum Fools Agreement (KFA) and SPLA defeated both, he is now turned to seek a way to get him there this time he is using Rod of Ngundeng, which he think this who kill President Kiir and if that happen he will become the president, leaving behind the heroes who fought for the freedom of Sudanese people not only the South.

Machar is still supporting the LRA and when he gave Konyi 200,000 USA dollar while the Southerners are suffering under the LRA.
Ngungdeng grandson Colonel James Lony Thichiot, putting so clearly that Machar is a failed leader who takes advantage of anything he saw. What is the important of this Rod the fools are dancing about? Did the Rod told them to support Bashir during the war so that South can be independent?, and if the founder of the movement join Khartoum as Reik did, did the Rod have given us the CPA without fighting. Brother AUGUSTINO DENG state very clear and fools failed to understand that there are such Rods in South and Kenya as well as even Kiir got one. Did you hear such rod contribute in any away to Kenya independent? You should think twice fools. With you failed leader the man who will never be the president of the South. By Ngwerajak

Thanks, James for this page once again.
The so call Ngundeng "Dang" is the real Southern Sudan historic Stick it will show the Nuer culture and i have greed to be kept in safe place, and probably at Waat Area where the pyramid was built and as the origin of the Rod. HE Dr. Riek machar the Vice President of GoSS is the right person who can receive the dang, for the four reasons:

1/ Dr. Riek is the one of the top GoSS leader that alone can qualified him to receipt the Dang, not only for Nuer alone but for whole South regardless of this Ngundeng Dang, he can receipt Dengdit one if happen that in the nears future.

2/ he is from Bentiu where Ngundong’s father originated from. Dr. Riek is the Bentiu Elder well known in South sudan with the high educatinal profile

3/ There were romours that Ngundeng has said that there will Nuer Leader who will came after him, most of Nuer are guessing that Dr. Riek may be the one Ngundeng was talking about, because there are some indication on his body, well created man, using left hand as well as right hand and so on, Nuer elder can explain them more than me.

4/the Journalist, Douglas Johnson is not Sudanese, he is white man, from outside country with Diplomatic aspect. which can not allow any simple Nuer to receipt him at the Juba Airport.

My advice, is that Nuer must know that well is considering tittles, rank, more than mark on the forehead which has nothing to do with the world idiology. and modern concerpts.

Also, Nuer must teach themselve with protocols of the Goverment, and that is the importance of civilization; you acquired the best type from others and leave your bad type as well as their bad side of culture.

Great thank goes to the greater naath nation of whom the prophet is born into their family, and to southern Sudanese as this is the sign for a resistant as our beloved president Kiir put it yesterday in his address to the southern Sudanese’ chiefs in Bentiu state. It is also a sign that our independent is approaching something that contrary to the SPLM ideology of the dumb New Sudan vision.

Ngundeng, the prophet peace be upon him did not talk about any unity of southern Sudanese and the stupid Arab northerners in Sudan. He talked about a time southern Sudanese would become separate, free, and independent from bastard northerners. This is in odd with the SPLM ideology. Ngundeng wayee!!!!!!!!

Its an irony and sadening to see mature, litrate adults engage in unconstracive urguments. we should simply verify facts before jumping in to conclutions and witch hunting. the future of the South is our concern and thus we must learn to urgue wisely and constractively. this symbol (rod) that was returned to us is just one of the many other items that were looted by the colonizers before they left, for it to be found and retuned, is like a miracle and thus must be celebrated and kept with all our important documents and archives.

for Dr. Riek to be there in the airpot and personaly recieve the rod, is just to show GOSS respect for culture and tradition. lets stop personal vendetas and look forward to the task ahead. elections are around the corner, and in politcs constractive critism should be welcomed. what we are forgeting to talk about it our movement’s strategy for the upcoming elections, time is running out, and if we are keen on a true democratic transformation; then the SPLM needs to announce its candidate for the highest office of the land as soon as possible, and innitiate nationwide rallies.

and for those who are talking of political assasinations, know that your ideas are reciepe for bloodshet and distruction, let the ballot box show who is popular among our politicians.

The only one person Prophert Ngundenng promised to receive his Rod (Dang), after the Dang return from British, is Dr.Riek Machar Teny Thurgon.

Non of their grandsons and granddaughters were not promised to receive the Dang.

Lony Thichiot is not from Prophert Ngundeng Bong ’s family. He is outsider. He spoke against Machar thinking that he may get credit from his uncles Dinkas.

Lony hate Machar because Dr. Machar has never been betrayed his own people to Dinkas, and lony does that for all his career he has been a servant of Dinkas for long decate.

Prophert Ngundeng does not have a Nuer marks on his forehead. Lony doesn’t know about Prophert Ngundeng ’s history. Lony should keep his mouth shut or somebody will shut his mouth for him.

Prophert Ngundeng Blessed Dr. Riek Machar 2 fullfil his job. Prophert Blessed Dr. Riek Machar to be the President of Sudan as a whole.

People need to know that before they are talking against this blessing son of southerners.
    Thank you all
