November 12, 2008 (KHARTOUM) --- Sudanese President announced an immediate ceasefire in Darfur and called for a campaign to disarm militias which have been ravaging the western Sudan region of Darfur.

"I hereby announce our immediate unconditional ceasefire between the armed forces and warring factions provided that an effective monitoring mechanism be put into action and be observed by all involved parties," Omer Hassan Al-Bashir said.

The Sudanese president was speaking at the concluding session of the government-initiated Forum of the People of Sudan, which was attended by the Eritrean president Isaias Afeworki who arrived today in Khartoum.

He further called for "an immediate campaign to disarm the militias and restrict the use of weapons amongst armed forces," he said.

"We confirm out commitment of negotiations to reach peaceful solutions which guarantee the eradication of disputes," Bashir reaffirmed.

  • At last we can say BRAVO to the president Al-bashir, if really he is serious this time. Becos, all the warring factions in Darfur, especially SLA Abdalwahid faction who has been voicing it out that to enroll in a talk with government, there should be a comprehensive cease fire(CCF), and the disarmament of Janjaweed and other pro-government militias. Now that the president has put it on, all should work for that. This time,we pray that the president is serious becos we need peace to prevail in all part of sudan. Hey....Justice and Eguality Movement(JEM) said they are not abid with AL-bashir announcement. according to Aljeezera.

    • Where would this Peace process be if The ICC had not shown the big stick to Bashir?

He wants to save his own skin. He has no care for 2 million Darfuris.

Bashir breaks peace agreements more easily than he makes them. As soon as the pressure is off he’ll find a way to break the deal. The ICC should keep watching him.

The SLM and JEM should be even more careful in peace than in war.

  • Please you the waring faction leaders must watch out for Bashir to call for peace must be conditional and or something is behind. Learn from John Garang peace with Omar which lead to his death though they denied their hand on him. Please, use caution!

Iam still asking interntional community to make the mosquito buzz come true or Bashir’s statement of" USA, UK, and France are under my shoes" is gonna make sense.

    • Bashir is too smart in his games because he know diverting Darfur Problem would help him to fully focus on running away region of Southern Sudan. He is awear fighting two region at once can cause him power. So for him to calm down Darfuris for short time,he can retain southerners militarilly by dictating Salva government from breakaway. Southerners are you listening!
