South Africa sends humanitarian assistance to Sudan’s Abyei

Pretoria, 21 August 2008- South African will send tomorrow humanitarian assistance to Abyei where fierce fighting last May displaced around 50000 people from the disputed area, a said a statement issued here on Thursday .

The consignment is expected to arrive in Juba on 22 August 2008, before being transported to Abvei for distribution.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, approximately 60,000 people fled the town during the fighting, and at least 50,000 are still living in temporary shacks or crowded into homes with other families in Twic County, south of Abyei.

The displaced population is expected to return to Abyei by the end of September, when the member of interim administration are appointed. The former foes have withdrawn they troops and deployed joint units in the area.
