Sudan’s Machar says corruption allegations are “unfounded”

By James Gatdet Dak

August 17, 2008 (JUBA) – The Vice President of the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) and Deputy Chairperson of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), Riek Machar Teny, on Saturday said allegations of corruption labeled against him in the media were “unfounded.”

Sudan Tribune on Friday quoted Mama Rebecca Nyandeng, GoSS Presidential Advisor on Gender and Human Rights and widow of the late founder of the SPLM, John Garang de Mabior, as allegedly accusing the Vice President in the parliament session of bringing foreign companies to Southern Sudan so that he could get percentages of commissions in return.

Rebecca Nyandeng, however, on Saturday denied the allegations published by the media describing them as “baseless” and saying she did not accuse the Vice President of any such allegations.

Machar was also assured by the Southern Sudan Anti-Corruption Commission that the Commission did not have any single report or record of corruption case labeled against him among the recorded corruption cases even during the time he was also holding an additional portfolio as the Minister of Housing, Lands and Public Utilities between 2005 and 2007.

The Chairperson of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Pauline Riak last month told the press that her institution has recorded more than 14,000 cases of corruption in the first six months of the year 2008 alone, which are pending investigations.

She said there was outright stealing of money throughout the semi-autonomous Government.

Last year, the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly evaluated general performances of all the institutions of the Government and rated Machar’s headed institution as the most well performed and was ranked number one by the parliament with scores of 87% while the least performed and last ranked GoSS Ministry was rated at 10%.

  • If Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon is a corrupt person, he should have been like Mr. Joseph Lago and Mr. Abel Alier who never enjoyed the bush life since their Addis Ababa Acord was set on fire by arabized Nubian govt (NIF)in 1972.

Dr. Riak is not after money, but South Sudan to be free State has been his dream since his days in Khartoum University.

Let the corruptors get what they want before their time run out.

    • If he is not after money, what took him to Khartoum? Do you think the arabs said any thing special that convinced him to go to Khartoum? No, they used money. Did he have a South Sudan dream when he signed a fake agreement, and fought against the liberators alongside our enemy? All he knows is sugar and money. Bashiir is a witness.

    • Dear Deng don’t make a fool of yourself or do not let others think that you are making a fool of yourself by making those statements. For your information, Riek, by the way if you can ask him to give you a defination of what free South Sudan may define or mean he will not give you absolute or real defination. Therefore, don’t even defense Riek by mentioning words as free South Sudan. Riek knows how money are importance to him rather than serving the interest of his own people , he will not passby money when money came across his direction. In realities, if Riek knows what free South Sudan could mean he would have not left James Hoth along with late Dr. Garang and let himself being influenced with money and fool agreement and took a life of innocent people, People he supposed to fight for their freedom. Lastly, do you know why Riek makes that terible idea of 1991? He was thinking that would be the only way for Garang to leave the SPLM. Nontheless, he have no idea that Dr. Garang was fighting for "equality, freedom, and justice" that’s needed by all marginalized people of Sudan leave alone South Sudan not even Bor people as he claim. In comparison, Abel Alier and Joseph Lago have never commited any crime against Southern Sudan People in order to overthrown William Deng Nhial during the Anya Anya I. If they can’t joint him there was nothing wrong with those induals living their life in Khrotoum or elsewhere outside Sudan, the best thing that Riek should have done before taking the action of his idea of 1991 against Bor innocent people if he wasn’t able to go along with Garang’s policies. His other option would have been fighting Garang’s force(SPLA) not people who were living civilian life if he was real guy.

      Dear kim,

Don’t just rush to comment when you are not smart of what to tell to the public. I am sorry to learn that some Southerners are still cheap to be exploited by power hungry politicians such as Riak Machar who is both a killer and a corruptee. If not so how come that you and wife of Riak Mrs. Pauline give Riak 87 percent, this sounds erroneous and biased. It is true that your wife never betray you even when you are wrong but to cover and let you remain under conducive atmosphere as you do in bed.

    • To kim

How did Dr Riek Present in the Bush helped the southerners during the liberation. He was not that helpful, infact he was busy running between Khartoum and Nairobi betraying the heroes who were on the ground fighting the NIF.

I am getting sick of people who praise leaders who have not contributed anything in the strungle.

If you want to praise Dr Riek then do it on the Basis of his failed 1997 Khartoum Charter not on the CPA.

  • HI to everyone who love this enemy Riek and traitor of the South Sudan, If Riek Machar’s wife Pauline Riek, a wife number 6, is chairperson of the anticorruption who then will charge him of Corruption. I know there will be no dispute to Riek’s characters comparing him to Joseph Lago and Abel Alier is no true, Lago and Alier were not traitors nor do they joined Khartoum in order to receive anything for themselves and for your information Riek is the enemy of the South Sudan and a man who is behind all the dirty things done during the war. Also Mr Kim please never should treated Riek in tribe line, if you support him, you are not difference from someone who Support Bashil because Riak support NCP in war against the Southerners and Know that Machar is not good for you and not for the South. The Equatoria people are suffering from the LRA because of his friend Joseph Konyi. Riek is fool and coward and he was never being in bush compared to Lago and Alier who had done their part to signed Addis Ababa agreement in 1972 while the Traitor Dr. Riek signed the Khartoum Fools Agreement (KFA) 1992, since all of those who with him were fools and that was why the agreement was named. Riek is always after money and that was why he accepted money and join Khartoum. Machar’s short cut is from Traitor to Vice president. There is no way Riek signed any deals without the knowledge of the Juba commissioner if it is not corrupt and his habits of accepting any bribes. By Ngwerajak

Hey guys! Hold on for moment to builds upon your contributions toward Mrs. Garang and her counterpart Dr. Riak regarding the blame game that they played. To me and me lone, I could suggested that both Mrs. Garang and vice president are calyptrate that should not be distinguished from one another starting from their political view though not all of them are politician or when to Khartoum as defector like Rebecca did not but she is standing in the shade of late hero which had no problems with that however their arguments base on who is diggings deeper into the pocket of nation between themselves?. When both of them were minsters ,mp and Vice president respectively like Riak did, they were like the wolves among the sheep, it was their chance to fills their pockets from bottom to the top with public funds which has no doubt on that they did it to their best, but can we truth them as the vice and honourable members with those characters of misusing the funds and other with different political prospective like Riak who is now sitting in southern parliament as the body and heart in Khartoum palace? If not then I have to suggested that madam Rebecca is not right to the extend that she could justify her statement but her statement should not be overruled as a political implication against one time war criminal. still is????

But (Machar)loves for money is extra-ordinary, it’s something that can’t be denied that was a very reason he left for Khartoum, unless you are a tribalist you are allergic to this being mention against Black man (Machar).

Hi guys. it is good to express our selves on the media, but what a poor politic are we doing here? My brothers, as i said before that we must respect our government. We are supposed to encourage our leaders, to do their best for the poor southerners, who don’t hate either Reik or Salva, they just want their freedom from Khartoum, if it is by Salva or Machar it doesn’t matter. Brothers, we have lots of things to do in the south currently, we need to get free from dame ruler government, which have treated us like second class citizens, since independent January 1st, 1956. We didn’t enjoy what its called the belonging to Sudan. So we should give our leaders a break to take their time to think about a good solution, instead of going negative with them always, suppose you are the one who people criticize him all the time, do you think you should do some thing in that situation? I don’t think you should do anything, because of a bad feeling from those people who always criticize you, i think if you got encouragement from anyone around even by accident, i think you should always try to do your best to those people who encourage you, to make them happy once, the same with leaders they need our encouragement toward them so they can do their best to make us happy. My friends we don’t have to be always negative with our leaders, or we are not understanding politic, the good politic is not to criticize person always with out giving him or her the right someday, or he/she is not person doesn’t sense . In this case some have right to understand we are serving tribalism. We are suppose to change our language toward our country issues not to remain always divided, we are one nation, and no one is so clear as the God angels, we have some weaknesses as human being.

In every Government you might have heard of opposition party or leader, do you know what this leader does against the ruling party? I hope you know very well, I am not opposing the South Sudanese government but, I go against those who are robbing that poor nation in abroad day light, which is unacceptable.

However, being positive to them as you may think is meaningless when they don’t deserve credits for the job done. It is through calling a spade by its name that will make them excel and faithful in their work. People learn through correction.

South Sudan must show the world that it can do better where most African countries have failed. if we can forgive those who have misled us and stolen from us, then as citizens we must all demand that anyone who wants to lead will be scrutinize and put to test on daily basis to see if they are fit for the positions they are seeking. because we can all blame Dr.Riek for everything and leave out our part in it. let us asist these leaders in their effort to build a nation for all where we will have a voice. come up with pragmatic ideas and be prepared to be rejected or accepted. all is struggle..so ladies and gentlemen it is a hard road to go...be prepared to fight.....pdukol@gmail.com

Gatdhella, i don’t know who are you serving,Dr. Reik or Omar Basheir, if you mean you are serving Reik, you did a mistake for one reason, Dr Machar may not accept what mess you are making for him, because he is a second person in SPLM, when you criticize Mr. general secretary honorable Pagan Amum, you are criticizing the whole SPLM including Reik Machar, who are you think you always defense him, you are pulling everyone attention toward Dr. Reik, which it’s means Reik have knowledge about your campaign, and that may make a big damage for Dr machar reputation, as tribal leader not everyone leader.

I urge you brother not to be on that line, if you are not SPLM member, please stick on professor David De Chand because he is anything, but Dr. Reik is southern vice president, we want him without your defense, he has countless defenders who will defense him in south government not you the luak man, I just wish you to keep your cows well and don’t touch our government which it’s SPLM/A.

Or she thinks people of South forgot that? Where is $60 millions that president of The Republic of Sudan gave to your husband before he got killed three years ago? Wow! Nyandeng wants to become the president of GoSS, shut up, you failed to do your job as a minister in the GoSS. Nyandeng needs to know that being Garang’s widow is not a qualification for a post in GOSS. If she wants to talk about corruption, she needs to bring all the money of people of South back, or wait till the day people of South will ask her or her kids.

For all of us make many mistakes. If someone does not make any mistakes when he/she speaks he/she is perfect and able to control his whole body. Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his noble conduct that his actions are done humbly and wisely. But if you have bitter jealousy and rivalry in your hearts, stop boasting and slandering the truth. That kind of wisdom does not come from above. No,it is worldly,self-centerd,and demonic. For wherever jealousy and rivalry exist, there is disorder and every kind of evil. However, the wisdom that comes from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving,gentle,willing to yield, full of compassion and good deeds, and without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. And a harvest of righteousness is grown from the seed of peace planted by peacemakers.

Dear Gat, The anti-SPLMs that have infiltrated into the SPLM party are known one by one. Who on earth cannot appreciate the figure of Cde Pagan Amum inthe SPLM? If you are failing to recognise his effort, then you are politically myopic. Don’t be blinded by tribalism. Your uncle Machar was forgiven that is why he is able to his position. Or you think you used your usual aggression to earn him the positon? He was given the post for the sake of reconciliation and unity, but you the Nuers are not appreciating that. Some of you are working day and night to render CPA signed by the SPLM useless like your KPA of 1997. • Corruption or no corruption, many who have already made their worse comments could have done it or had done it before against Riek even when he is mention for having accomplish something good for the nation. There are many examples to this fact especially if one doubt it,he is free to refer back to all the articles where Riek’s work has been the subject of the topic or simply where he is mention by name.

The fact is,many people are not happy that Riek,a Nuer is a vice president of South Sudan, they selfishly wish it for their dear tribe member,it is so ridiculous and stupid for such kind of mentality which is the main curse to southerners in term of forming sustainable united front against our main enemy [Arab Elites] who want us perish from the face of the Earth.

Well corruption is nothing holy or something that need to be condone by anybody at all,and if only we could take it out of the system of our autonomous government today, then we will realize most of our dreams coming true. But the way Nyan-Deng try to come out with the accusations at least finally against Riek is not sincere, first of all there is no evidence whatsoever of what she said, she must probably putting up a show or only God knows what she is upto, given her historical records back in the liberation days on the influence she have had on her husband, leading to many nightmares among movement’s top men and setbacks to what was gained then by the revolution. Nyan-Deng is to be blame for quite a lot of things which had happened, but this is not the right time to do that not only because of the lose of her late husband which is still fresh and frankly is a silence suffering trauma for her but also to maintain calm and unity across all the sections of our society and to work full time to get what we all have been yearning for ages,[an independent South Sudan Nation]With division among us as a priority, this can never be real.

Let stop being tribal, the whole GOSS system is corrupt, why don’t we talk about it in general? instead of targeting individual because they simply belong to other tribe.

            • Kur !

I am happy that you understood my message! One thing I wanted you to appreciate (even though you are too naive to understand that)is the fact that Sudanese Ethiopia such as Naath and Anuek supported the movement than any one else during those days. Ethiopia were the only country in Africa that has hosted two consecutive southern Sudanese liberation movements, and that has happened due to reason already mentioned, think with your brian!

If not because Ethiopia is the second home to many southern Sudanese tribes (including Naath and Anuak)and that is perhaps the reason why Southern movements do always receive a brotherly welcome! we would have lost the war ages ago!

Many of our Naath brothers alos got their higher education there! So, it is not offending at all to categorize Prof De Chan as an Ethiopian, as long as it doesn’t deny him his right of being a Sudanese!

Just to show you how rubbish your comment worth! Who were supporting SPLA/M during the war other than those Ethiopian Sudanese you hate to see right now my idiot friend!

I mean it when I say that we have the largest land in the Upper Nile Region, i.e. from Akobo to Waat, Fankak to Benteu, Nasir to Malaual and Jickou, all that huge land is inhabited by Naath and no one else but Naath alone, we don’t want you my friend, as we can build a country of our own so, if worse comes to worse we can declare the independency of that Land as the Federal states of the Nuer Land, with Malakal as its capital city! if you think that it is impossible then you are indeed as crook as Pagan, Nyadeng and your dead idiot Garang! and aslo not me to go to hell son of bitch but you, because you will have where to be as we are going to add any Dinka land that is neighbouring us to the the greater Nuer!!

We will do that just like when Latjour Ding Yan created the eastern Nuer from the blue! we are not jocking my friend, we fade up by hearing crooks like your Pagan Amum talking rubbish to our figures such as Dr. Guandit ni gat macaar God bless him, even though we Naath were the one that liberate your bottoms from the Arab humilation and torture with our blood and resources!!

Eeven now, we are still the largest contributors of the GoSS budget, if I have to ask you of how much money is contributed by Dinka to the income of the GoSS that make you talked like that can you come up with an answer my idiot friend?

No, it is going to be over very soon between us, I promise you, Nyadeng and your step dad Pagan, the most corrupt crook in the whole Southern Sudan!

How can we expect changes to come about when the GoSS is run by crooks and primitives such as idiot and killer general Kual Manyang Juk your uncle, we better off!

              • Ajak,

How long your coward folks will keep talking about gat raam-mi-raan Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon? Was it not your uncle Mr. Salva and his kinds who tried to kick Dr. Riek out from the movement during SPLM 2nd National Convention?

Rwanda would have been better than South Sudan if not because your coward kin regreted from their uncalculated plan to kick Dr. Riek out from the movement as they did to Dr. Lam Akol.

                Gatdilha,

It is not far for the greater Naath to declare Naath nation start from Gambella Region in Ethiopia to Fanaruu (Dinka Ruweng)and from Mading Bor (Bor Goach/Cieth)up to Reng (Dinka Abilaang)in which Malakal town can be its capital city.

                • Brother Kim!

We the Naath have to be united in order to deter our foes!! We are blessed with our number, wisdom and courage!! We just need unity in order to fully exploit this blessing!! Let not allow divide and rule policy because it will weaken us! We can’t accept being bribed with wealth that comes from our greater Nuer land! Yes I support your statement! We need to make everyone in Upper Nile a Nuer, everyone must speak Nuer!
