East Sudan Front, Eritrea hold talks on peace deal implementation

January 10, 2008 (ASMARA) – Eritrean President has discussed with the leader of the former eastern Sudan rebels the implementation of a peace deal with the Sudanese government that Eritrea brokered.

President Isaias Afwerki, on Wednesday evening held talks with the East Sudan Front delegation headed by Sudanese presidential advisor Musa Mohamed Ahmed, Chairman of the Front.

The two parties discussed the pending issue in the implementation of the Eastern Sudan Peace Agreement (ESAP )signed in October 14, 2007. The official Shabait reported that Sudanese parties are committed to the deal.

Asmara also pledged to continue to hold talks with Khartoum on the deal implementation.

Eritrea also urged the former rebel group to maintain the unity of the East Sudan Front.

“President Isaias asserted that in view of the fact that …strengthening the organization is decisive in the implementation of the Agreement. To this end, he underlined that the governments of Eritrea and Sudan, as well as all the parties concerned in the implementation of the Agreement, should play their due role.”

The East Sudan Front delegation arrived in Asmara on January 4 at the invitation of the Eritrean government and the ruling PFDJ.
