Sudanese protesters demand death for teddy teacher

Saturday 1 December 2007 printSend this article by mail

November 30, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — Hundreds of Sudanese Muslims, waving green Islamic flags, took to the streets of Khartoum on Friday demanding death for the British teacher convicted of insulting Islam after her class named a teddy bear Mohammad.

"No one lives who insults the Prophet," the protesters chanted, a day after school teacher Gillian Gibbons, 54, was sentenced to 15 days in jail and deportation from Sudan.

At least 1,000 protesters shook their fists or waved banners or ceremonial swords and chanted religious and nationalist slogans after leaving Muslim Friday prayers. Banners called for "punishment" for Gibbons, and some protesters burned newspapers that contained pictures of the teacher.

Several hundred protesters made a brief stop at the closed but heavily guarded Unity High School, where Gibbons worked, but did not attempt to go inside. The school was guarded by five truckloads of police in riot gear.

The protesters marched from there to the British embassy where several hundred surrounded the ambassador’s residence, chanting religious slogans. There were no reports of violence.

Gibbons was charged on Wednesday with insulting Islam, inciting hatred and showing contempt for religious beliefs because the class toy had been given the same name as the Muslim Prophet Mohammad.

Under Sudan’s penal code, she could have faced 40 lashes, a fine or up to a year in jail. But Gibbons was convicted only of insulting religion. Teachers at her school say that calling the teddy bear Mohammad was not Gibbons’s idea and that no parents objected when she sent circulars about a reading project that included the bear, introduced in September, as a fictional participant.

GIBBONS ’WELL’

A spokesman for the British embassy in Khartoum said that the British consul and deputy ambassador had seen Gibbons on Friday and that she was well, but gave no clue as to where she was being held.

"We are not commenting on her location," spokesman Omar Daair said.

Lawyers had initially said they expected Gibbons to have been taken to Omdurman women’s prison, a jail which is overcrowded and usually filled with women serving sentences for making and selling alcohol, illegal in mainly Muslim Sudan. But lawyers could not say on Friday where she was being held.

One defence lawyer said on Thursday that Gibbons had already served five days of her sentence since her arrest on Sunday and that she may not have to serve all the remaining days. The judge said she could leave once she had a compulsory exit visa, defence lawyers said.

Sudan has had poor relations with Britain, the United States and most European countries for several years, mainly due to disagreements over how to handle the conflict in Darfur in western Sudan.

Britain’s foreign minister has said he was "extremely disappointed" with the verdict and called in the Sudanese ambassador for an immediate explanation.

The United Nations Security Council, of which Britain is a permanent member, wants to deploy a joint U.N.-African force to Darfur to help end the conflict and help displaced people return home. Khartoum reluctantly agreed but is disputing many details.

International experts estimate that some 200,000 people have died and 2.5 million been driven from their homes in ethnic and political conflict in Darfur since a revolt by mostly non-Arab rebels in 2003.

In the eyes of the civilized world this just looks so frikking stupid. Don’t you idiots think you have enough problems in your country? This is such an asshole decision and you should all be ashamed to be so idiotic. To have worshipers to come out of a mosque with knives and machetes and demand that she be killed is certainly idiotic. This is just another example of how Africa will always be a 4th world compared to the rest of us.

Stupid people, wake up! Feed your children.

You come to our countries and we treat you like us. Then you run around like prehistoric neanderthals killing and wanting to kill.

What a useless country you are.

Dear Muslims, Will you forgive-and forget? I was a fool when I refer to Mohamed as a teddy bar and I know it. I can’t imagine why I did what I have done, and I am kicking myself for being such and idiot. This is the first and the last time, and I am determined that it will never happen again. I have felt so miserable in my life. Gillian Gibbons

CanadaMAN what a bigotted point of view!!!

Haven’t you read the comments from all the rational Sudanese on this website? Did it ever cross your mind that the Sudanese people residing in Canada are seeking refuge from this murderous regime? Or is your anger only reserved for times when white people face humiliation like this? Oh what blatant indifference!!!

What happened to Miss Gibbons over a petty issue is terrible... but it also happens to many innocent Sudanese all the time... If everyone in the World was this passionate about them, maybe all these dictators would be sent packing!!!

It is these acts of this extremist Islamic regime that are driving both Christians and moderate muslims out of the country.

It is true though that they’ve shown the world how idiotic they are BUT don’t paint us all with the same brush - many Sudanese are condeming this illegitimate regime and its idiotic actions.

Mr. Canada Man, please thinking creatically when responding to such critical issues such as this one. Not all Sudanese, or Africans would make such decisions irrational decision to jail a teacher because she has given an animal a holly name. At the same time, majority of muslims, whether Sudanese, or middle east muslims are sensitive to anything regarding islamic at best and at worse are radicals and extremists. Therefore, you hastily generalized Sudanese and Africans to be idiot, and you forgot the fact that majority of Sudanese are not muslims and are against extremism and irrationality such as the issue in question.

Most people in Sudan including muslims are unhappy with the imprisonment of the British teacher. But the elites of the fascist government in Sudan organized the protest. So, this is not to be blamed on all Sudanese or Africans but a group of wolves who currently are in control of the government in Sudan.

My advice to you is to familiarize yourself with Sudanese politics so as to understand who is who and which is which in Sudan. Also, don’t be exteremist. You may consider yourself as a rational or normal person but your reaction implied that you could become radical if opportunity avails itself.

      • I fully support you Deng. I am a white woman from the so called "civilized world" by birth, but I have been living in Southern Sudan for many years. Though I condemn the irrational and extremist reaction of many muslim/arab on the street of Khartoum, I want to spend a few words about the Canadaman"s statement. It is true, many black people have been suffering the same fate and very few took interest in condemning the atrocities the black people have been suffering under the hands of a minority fundamentalistic group. I pray for Ms Gibbson’s release but I want to tell Mr. Canadaman to be more respectful towards the African People. He speaks from a very safe and free country. He most probably studied enough and maybe he has even completed his PHd but Alas, he does not know much about the history and Geography of Sudan. WHat’s about inviting him to come and stay with us for awhile and understand better the situation and then....... we will grant him the freedom to call us idiots. a white woman

          Dear criticizers of Mr Canadaman

although his comment is very emotional and lacks objectivity, it is probably the result of a deep frustration about the overall situation in Sudan, both North and South. Being in South Sudan now for several months, I share this frustration. Although being supported by many governments, GO, NGO’s relief workers and donators from all over the world, Sudan has created nothing but war, destruction, corruption and violence. Examples ? 8 policemen being shot by the "army" of their own country, 27 people killed in cattle raid, 7 people killed in the attack on a hospital (!), uncounted in bloodrevenge. And all that in the last couple of weeks. You might call that your culture; it is nothing but ancient and obsolete behaviour of a community, which is immature to join the "civilized world". South Sudan could feed entire Africa, if just some men would stand up and do agriculture, instead of sitting in the streets and sleep all day long; but that apparently is not into the "culture". Nomads are travelling through the country; fine if they want to do so. But don’t expect anybody to run behind them with medical aid, education and food. My recommendation to the "civilzed world": Stay out of Sudan, let the Sudanese take responsibility for themselves; they have spent billions and billions achieving nothing. If they want to kill each other - feel free.

The lady is an Arabs’ ally and she deserved what she got. Those who are serving Khartoum are their associates and as a south Sudanese, I care less about them. There are many people in the western countries like Gibbons who don’t comprehend how evil are the Arabs in Khartoum. After all, those who don’t understand the attitude of Muslims have to learn the hard way. To those of us in the south of the country, those who rally round the Arabs in Khartoum are equally evil as those Arabs in Khartoum.

It is indeed very funny that our Muslim brothers are very much concerned with trivial issues and petty crimes committed. It is very clear that Ms Gibbins has commited this mistake with no intentions. I wonder what the angry crowd who protested at the British Embassy in Khartoum with police support have done with regards to the atrocities in Darfur, the arrest of three journalists in Sudan, the Rift Valley fever that is claiming hundreds of lives, the wasted billions from the agrarian project budget and the government’s feet dragging tendency with regards to the CPA. Would it not be fair if we consider the Sudanese public a "hullicinated and disillusioned public". It seems to me that our Northern brothers are drunk to no return to sobernity by the regime’s propoganda. If the crowd has no buisness but to spil innocent blood then they should go to hell.

It’s not new in the history of Sudan that any thing related to mohamad name could endanger any one who went across Sudan. Before you reach inside the country, you need to think about Sudanese politics and their view of the Sudanese God name mohamad. Leave a lone naming a little teddy bear by little children, but carrying any thing written mohamad could brought you into contact with their local laws.

Sudanese government is always against any foreign nation who does not support violent that is currently in Sudan. If this women is chinese, she may not even face the justice or jail because China is the back born of Sudan, aiding them with all landmines and other light weapons used against Darfur and other regions in Sudan. The issue of landmines had been question a year ago, but Sudanese claims that they need more budget for landmines clearance. They got 48.6 million from the donors and they are considered as the second highest landmines survivor next to Afghanistan who reached 66.8 million, yet they use these money for nothing or instead of clearing the landmine field they just open paramilitary camps with all those budget. Isn’t that surprise that the world is working to end the landmines issue across the world and donate all those money to be used to destroy the stockpiles, and yet the Sudanese government is using them to destroy the civilian lives in Darfur and South Sudan.

Back to the topic, I was wondering why they considered children acts as an evidentful of insulting their God. Across the world, believers never protect their God by force. However, in the muslim world, Mohamad name is an issue that can easily put you in death within matter of minutes because the more they heard that some one touch the name of mohamad, the more they come up with their pagas, knives and other sharp things to cut you into pieces.

God is considered God becuase is the one taking care of those who sin and those who does wrong/right. In christian world, its always normal to name anything Jesus as long as you are happy with it. Why didn’t the Sudanese people name their teddy bear Jesus as a respond or do what ever they want instead of puting this British born teacher into danger. It seem to me that Sudanese or Islamic believers are the one above the mohamad and mohamad act in the position of believers. Therefore, it should be good that people who are traveling around the world should be careful not to touch or mention anything related to the muslim God.

Not all Sudanese are involved in this saga just as not all British where involved in slave trade and colonialism of other peoples territories, And please think again if you think Sudan relays on Europe for help you are dead wrong, Sudan is now getting more independent and has massive reserves of oil and gas, it also has abundoned resources to support itself, tell me how much money britain gives the Sudan government, and prove it with fact data please, is it about $100 million given to the NGOs? is that alot of money to you compared to the whole money Sudan has? all the money your government gives go to the NGOs whos workers are all from your country and so the money goes back to their pockets and no developments on the ground, so please watch your mouth cos Sudan can do better without Britian, its 21st centuary world and new super powers are coming out from other world regions now. Mrs Gillian is innocent and i wanna see her free soon, but please do not turn this issues into a race like Africa vs Europe as some British are trying to do, cos it wouldn’t help both sides, if you don’t respect others and if you overeact and start insults against others, then what is the difference between you and those who arrested Gillian? no one forces anyone to come to africa from other parts of the world, if they wanna work for NGOs and do business or earn money, but they choose to do soon out of their own good will and they can stop to do so when they wish, please try to keep it between Sudan and Britian only and keep the discussion subject to the event. by Sudanese Christian

      Dear sudanson,

here are your hard facts. According to this website, the costs for UN operations in Sudan will be as high as 2.2 billion USD. Will Sudan reimburse it ? Or will the oil revenue will go straight to the swiss banc accounts of some of corrupt leaders ? If Sudan is so rich and independent, why do people suffer from the lack of medical care, food and education. Why are your well educated people sit in Europe, Australia or North America instead of being here, helping to develop something (maybe it is, because the Kawajas are still stupid enough to do it). Why do people piss in the street, not having a proper toilet ? I have a million more of these questions, when I walk through the streets of South Sudan. And here is the relation to the teddy-teacher: Many more Europeans and North Americans start to ask the same questions, especially when they hear those news. So if your country is as rich as you say: Go and help yourself, get modern and stop praising something, what is not worth to be praised.

By the way, European, what are you doing in southern sudan where is no something you can clean your ass? You try to point out killing in southern sudan while we are still at war, do you know the European history started on one BC? One day I will tell you why Europeans move over the world. If you from USA, do you know how many Indians, whole latin America countries, and Asian, killed by white America?, leave a lone AA who gone through hell by the hand of their devil or diseases. Some folks like Risk and canada are very sad with Africa while majority of Africanos are not muslim. I tell you what, although Africa people suffer in their terriotory, they don’t like to invade other country and robe them with their resources and left terrible diseases in there. Where there is more European descendent in Africa such as Kenya, uganda, southern Africa, and the rest of the country have more Aids and with different terrible diseases. Do you really mean civilized world live without problem? What about those kidnap, rape and killed young ladies and boys in the civilized world? what about those like to malester their own teen daughter and killed? European,

you are one ignorant minded individual who is trying to make yourself feel good and happy by thinking you are the best when you are not, i wanna tell you something what you guys are doing here is not good for Britians international image considering your country is a respected country within the international community worldwide, so behave yourselves cos you represent your country here. Now you said UN is looking for $2.2 billion for darfur relief, the question is where is that money,Sudan never asked money from UN, and has it the money been given to the Sudanese authorities? has it been confirmed by any legal Sudanese authorities? has this money reached darfur and to the people who need it ont he ground? the answeres to this are clear no, so if money goes to the UN it is not given to Sudanese authorities this is what you should know, the money goes to UN and NGOs only, they are the onces that conrol aid money and aid activities, do you know what the aid donors and workers do with the money they claimt hey contribute? They use just about 5-10% of the money and take all the rest of the money to their private accounts back in europe, the people on the ground only get cheap and sometimes expired goods, is this what you call donation? and are you proud of NGOs stealling money and getting involved in corruption? I don’t see anything to be proud of here, your country donates money to UN and not to Sudan authorities cos the money they donate goes back to them through their corrupt NGO workers, so stop thinking you are helping, the help only shows up on TV screen commercials but there nothing on the ground buddy. you said Sudanese are in Europeans countries, its cos europeans are in Sudan allover, its a free and civilized world as you claim so why complain about globalizing the world community? what are you doing in sudan yourself? did anyone ask you to come to sudan or you came of your own will,Sudan was at war but its getting back to normal now and has enough to help itself but you are welcome if you want to donate money to make yourself feel good and proud. Sudanese people don’t owe British nothing since they left during colonization, we want to be friends and good partners with British thats all. Dear Europeans, Americans, and whoever there.

You misunderstood the problem and try to intermingle the problem of Ms.Gibbons and the atrocities in Sudan. In retrospect, British knows the behaviours of Arabs of Sudan very well than any Europeans.

I hope and believe those writers are not from Greater UK since britain experienced how Muslims smell.

I am from Southern Sudan, and i don’t like what happened to Ms. Gibbons and you people generalised Sudanese as Muslims or idiots. Let me give you two Examples: 1: British man died in Sudan e.g. Charles Gordon who was murdered by Ansars Mahdist Supporters for the sake of freedom in Sudan. 2: Sir Lee Stack, the Governor of Sudan from 1917-1925 was murdered in the street of Cairo on 24th September 1924 and was replaced by Jeofry Aruther. These two people advocates for the separation of South Sudan from Central Government and to annexed it to East African countries. They failed to do so, because you whites you like arabs than the black African people as you consider them the brave and intelligent people.

We in the South don’t like arabs that is why we fought them for a long time and I can say you are the ones who support them. I went to Khartoum last year and I found many Europeans like nothing in Khartoum. Is it not becase you like them? Our war will continue like Israel and Palestin.

Do not put Sudan in General, we have our Government in the South and if any white man or woman commit any crime in the South Sudan , the law of South Sudan will be apply to him/her not Khartoum Sharia Law.

        Thank you !!
