Germany extends Darfur military mission

April 27, 2007 (BERLIN) — The German parliament voted today to extend the mandate of the country’s military mission to Darfur region by six months till mid-November.

The German parliament voted overwhelmingly on Friday to extend the mandate for the country’s military mission to Sudan’s strife-torn Darfur province by six months to mid-November.

Bundestag members from all major parties spoke out against human rights abuses in the western province.

Speakers noted a UN report that the Sudanese government had disguised transport aircraft as UN aircraft and flown weapons into the region.

Up to 75 German troops participate in the UN Mission in Sudan.
