South Sudan bans soldiers with guns downtown

April 20, 2007 (JUBA) — President of Southern Sudan government has banned soldiers from going to bars, restaurants and discos with guns, following persistent complaints from foreigners that they were a target of harassment by security agencies.

According to the Ugandan Monitor, President Salva Kiir has directed security agencies through the Commander of the Military Police Corps, Sudan Peoples Liberation Army (SPLA) Headquarters Stephen Buay Rolnyang, to arrest any errant soldier.

Gen. Kiir’s directive follows an inquiry by President Yoweri Museveni into reports of intimidation and harassment of Ugandans living in South Sudan by the authorities there.

Kenya, another country with a high population of its nationals in Southern Sudan after Uganda, wrote a diplomatic protest note to Sudan about the harassment of their citizens by security and local Sudanese.

Many Ugandans and Kenyans, work and live in Southern Sudan, where they are engaged in construction, teaching, information technology, diplomatic service and trade.

Tit for tat is a fair game!

Sudanese have been accused of mishandling foreigners especially Kenyans and Ugandans. That is really unfortunate and I personally share in theIr suffering.
Ugandans deserve my sympathy more than the Kenyans who did all that the carpenter could do to the timber to our fellow Sudanese in Kenya.
Let us all learn how to handle people who are in need as situations keep changing. To some Kenyans, Sudanese are people with no skills, backwards, beggers etc. ‘A saying that greet people on your way up because you might meet them on your way down now holds water’
Some of us who were mistreated in Kenya feel offended to talk about the past, but we always think like human beings minus revenge.
    History unfolds, lets watch out!
