Efforts exerted to rebuild north south confidence – Sudanese speaker

June 27, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — Speaker of the National Assembly, Ahmed Ibrahim al-Tahir, said that serious work is ongoing for rebuilding mutual confidence between the northerners and southerners and to rendering the unity as the attractive choice to the Sudanese people.

Al-Tahir described as weak and insignificant the call of some northerners for separation between the north and the south, adding that this call was a reaction of certain and limited incidents, the state-run SUNA reported.

He said that the mechanisms to make the unity attractive include the role of the ruling National Congress and Sudan Liberation Movement (SPLM) to bridge the gap of mutual confidence at the level of the two parties and between the northerners and the southerners in the second level.

Al-Tahir said that the political partnership between the National Congress and the SPLM has approached advanced stages of cooperation and paved the way for the re-building and rehabilitation process.

He denies existence of any aspect in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement that referred to any form of separation. He stressed the importance of combating any attempt for foreign intervention in order to guarantee elevation of the unity option and to avoid separation.
