S. Sudan Yambio police foils attempted bank robbery

May 11, 2006 (NAIROBI) — Southern Sudan Police in Yambio in Western Equatoria state on Monday 8 May night say they have foiled an attempted bank robbery.

Police say several robbers attempted to break into Nile Commercial Bank in Yambio but were not successful. One of the alleged robbers was shot at the bank premises and later died in the hospital.

Nile Commercial Bank’s acting manager, Wasula Samuel, describes the incident to Sudan Radio Service (SRS). He said that one killed aftr fire exchange with the gangsters.

Wasula Samuel said ”We had a serious rain in Yambio on Monday night, so some robbers attempted to attack our bank and unfortunately through the exchange of fire and bullets one thug was shot in the shoulder. The rest managed to escape but unfortunately the one who was shot in the shoulder passed away in Yambio hospital. And right now we are waiting for reports from the security organs to tell us exactly what happened and what the cause was. They never managed to steal anything security was very tight so they meant to defend the bank.”

Wasula says the bank will resume its operations immediately. He also urged the authorities in the region to maintain tight security to ensure the safety of the bank.
