Egypt pushes for breakthrough in Darfur peace talks

April 21, 2006 (ABUJA) — Egypt is holding contacts with all Sudanese parties taking part in the Darfur peace talks currently being held in Abuja with the aim of pushing the talks forward and bringing closer the views of the different Sudanese parties.

In statements to MENA, Egypt’s Ambassador to Nigeria Ashraf Harbi said Friday further said the contacts also aim at ending the security tension in Darfur so that all displaced could return home and development efforts there be resumed.

In his statements, Harbi said Khartoum is serious in its efforts to settle the crisis with the different armed movements in Darfur.

The brothers in Sudan are looking forward to a positive Egyptian participation in the economic development in Darfur after peace there is restored, he said.

They also want Egypt to contribute to training Sudanese police forces and extending technical help to Darfuris, he said.

Egypt has played a positive role in settling the southern Sudanese crisis and is also keen on finding a settlement to the Darfur problem, he said, adding, this is why Cairo is participating in the Darfur talks as an observer along with the other international partners.
