Arab League affirms support to Darfur peace talks

Jan 23, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Amr Musa, has affirmed the support of the Arab League to the Nigerian sponsored peace talks to settle Darfur crisis peacefully.

Amr_musa.jpgThis came in a press statement following his meeting with the Presidential Advisor, Mustafa Osman Ismail, on the sidelines of the sixth African Union Summit Monday.

He said that the Arab League has been a part of the peace talks since their beginning as it has been a permanent representative in Abuja to work hand in hand with the UN and the African Union and the Sudanese parties to achieve peace in Darfur.

He explained that his talks with Ismail were focused on the exchange of views on International, regional and Arab issues of common concern.

He said that they agreed to act solve issues of Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine and Darfur. The Secretary General of the Arab League revealed that he would visit Sudan in March to discuss agenda of the Arab League summit.

Musa’s visit to Khartoum comes also in the framwork of the ongoing arrangements and preparations for convocation of the Arab summit in march 2006 in Khartoum.
