Norway to construct Garang Memorial Hospital in Juba

Garang_in_April_1986.jpgJan 10, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — Norway will soon construct a hospital in the capital of southern Sudan, Juba, to be named after the late first vice-president John Garang.

The construction of the John Garang Memorial Hospital will be financed from the multi-donor trust fund pledged by donors during their conference on Sudan in Oslo, Norway last year.

A delegation from Norway’s Haukeland University Hospital this week visited Juba for a fact-finding mission.

The leader of the delegation, Prof Stener Krinnsland, told Sudan Radio Service (SRS) in an exclusive interview in Khartoum that during their fact-finding mission they noticed inequalities in the delivery of health services in Sudan, adding that something should be done about it.

Prof Krinnsland said they will also help train health personnel and build health sector infrastructure in southern Sudan.

The construction of the hospital follows a request by the former SPLM health secretariat to the Norwegian government to improve the health sector in southern Sudan.
