Denmark pledges $ 90 mln to implement peace in Sudan

Dec 1, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudanese government and Denmark on Thursday 1 December signed a memorandum of understanding in which the latter has pledged to give the former 90 million dollars to implement the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

Taha_beshir_and_Garang.jpgThe money was pledged by Denmark during the Oslo donors’ conference and will be paid between the year 2005-2009.

The Danish ambassador to Sudan resident in Cairo, Egypt told the Sudanese Media Centre (SMC) the aim of his country’s assistance is to support the areas affected by war and help in reconstruction in both the south and the north.

The envoy said development will focus on education, return of refugees and the displaced. He said the Danish aid will be channelled through the UN and international agencies.

The deputy undersecretary in the Ministry of International Cooperation and representative of Sudan government, Mohamed Ali Omar, lauded efforts by the Danish government to bring about development in the country. He stressed that it assistance will make other countries honour their pledges made during the Oslo donors conference.
