Sudan FM, Norway minister discuss peace process

Nov 15, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — Sudan’s Foreign Minister, Lam Akol, has affirmed the seriousness of the Government of National Unity to implement the clauses of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement particularly after the formation of the Government of National Unity, the National Assembly, the state councils and the South Sudan government.

lam_akol3.jpgDuring his meeting this morning in his office with the visiting Norwegian delegation headed by the Norwegian international development minister, Erik Solheim, Lam Akol affirmed the efforts of the Government of National Unity to resolve the problem in Darfur and the government’s hope that the disputing factions would resolve their internal differences so as to facilitate the settling of the problem in Darfur and a comprehensive solution be achieved in the next round of talks expected to be held in Abuja on 20 November.

For his part, the Norwegian international development minister said that Norway was ready to support Sudan in development fields to consolidate the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

He also thanked the government of national unity for approving Norway to head the commission entrusted to evaluate and follow-up the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

He went on to say that Norway would work towards developing its relations with Sudan and that Norway was about to open a consulate in Juba to supervise the development projects required in the south for reconstruction and rehabilitation of what was destroyed by the war.

He said that Norwegian delegation would visit northern Darfur and southern Sudan to get aquatinted with the latest situation in those regions.

Meanwhile, the foreign minister accepted an invitation from the Norwegian government to visit Norway.
