Sudan’s Kiir, US Rice discuss sanctions, Darfur

Nov 1, 2005 (WASHINGTON) — The first vice-president, Lt-Gen Salva Kiir Mayardit, will meet the US secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice to discuss the lifting of sanctions imposed on his country, the Darfur crisis as well as the implementation of the peace agreement.

General_Salva_Kiir.jpgMayardit began his official visit to the USA today chairing a high-level delegation. During the visit, he will meet a number of officials in the US Administration.

The First Vice President stopped over in New York on Monday, where he visited the premises of the Permanent Mission of the Sudan to the United Nations.

The Sudanese charge d’affaires to Washington, Ambassador Khidir Harun, said that talks will discuss trade and economic sanctions imposed on the country, as well as brief the US on efforts made to bring peace in Darfur.

Ambassador Harun said that Kiir would hold meetings with officials in the US State Department to schedule the vice-president’s itinerary.
