April 16, 2010 (BENTIU, Unity state) – An independent candidate for gubernatorial position in the oil-rich Unity state is said to be leading by wide margin in preliminary counts as polling centers in the state’s nine counties slowly report in their respective results.

As ballot papers count began on Friday following the closure of polling stations on Thursday, reports from the state’s agents for Angelina Teny told Sudan Tribune that a number of counties that have already submitted results indicated that the independent female candidate is leading by a wide margin against other six contestants including the main challenger and incumbent caretaker governor, Taban Deng Gai.

The agents are part of the overall team that participate or witness the counts in every voting center in which two of her agents are posted at every center of the state’s 267 polling centers.

It is however premature to predict a land slide victory as most of the centers have not yet reported their counts to the state electoral commission headquarters in Bentiu.

Angelina Teny, the wife of Southern Sudan’s Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, has also been the state minister of Energy and Mining in the Khartoum-based Government of National Unity for the last five years.

Disowned by her party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) after declaring her independent candidature, Teny in her manifesto explained that she was responding to “public outcry for a new leader in the state…and to save the office from falling into the hands of a different political party as the popularity of the current governor severely dwindled throughout the state.”

Educated in Great Britain, the 40+ years old gubernatorial contestant criticized the current state administration for failure to provide development services to the people for the last five years despite the presence of resources, which she described as "astonishing experience to every citizen of Unity state."

The result are not yet announce;therefore, this independent candidate should not hope for the best at this point. The result of the entire State are not yet received.

      Dinka Boy,

Don’t panic yet for losing the 2% from Taban Deng Gai. It looks like you don’t know how election results always come in. They come in bit by bit and this is why the reporter has correctly stated it as "preliminary results." But this preliminary results always give people a clue to the bigger picture. If 50 centers, for example, have given their results and one candidate is leading in 40 out of those 50 centers, then you have something to hope for.

Angelina is widely expected to win because of her popularity in the state and people are fed up with Taban who was removed by party elections in 2008, but kept in office by his friend, Salvatore Kiir.

This time he is out and go there to Juba as minister of something, not imposed governor any more.....

Bravo Man-Teny (mother of Teny) for the people have spoken! I know you will change Unity state from its current regrettable situation to a brighter state it deserves........

        Wait here Gatwitch,

Did you say " Man-Teny?" A Dinka term? This is why Dinka laguage must be made a national language. What the difference between it and national language if other south tribes like Nuer speak it so fluently? Congratulation Gatwetch.

          DOOR,

May be you are right in another way. What does Man-Teny mean in Dinka? I know you don’t speak or write in Dinka language because you are not a Dinka.

Man-Teny means ’mother of Teny’ (Angelina’s first born son) who is currently a Masters’ Degree graduate from a very respected university in London.

Yes, Dinka and Nuer are very close in their language and have many common words. Jokingly, the Nuer always say Dinka’s language is taken from the slipping of the tongue of Nuer.

For example, when you say in Nuer "ci raan ben" which means the person has come, the Dinka will say "raan e ci ben," which is simply reversing how the Nuer says it. Can’t you see how close they are?

However, this is not the topic for debate as you try to divert the topic. I know you are not a true Dinka but want to make the topic Dinka vs Nuer kind of thing.

Angelina Teny is winning as shown by the preliminary results, what do you think, DOOR?

Stop Nuerization of other people’s names: You want everything to sound nuer-like.
            Keep these corrections straight:

            Salva not Salvatore

            Mayardit not Miyardit

            Machar not Michar

I have NEVER written Machar as Michar. Look for your other sources please. It could be somebody else.

What does Angelina deliver in minister of Mining and Energy? that she can claim of doing good if she become elected. the minister of mining and energy is more important then being a government of unity state because she was working for the whole of south Sudan. she totally have 100% failure in mining & energy and now just want to switch the job. why she is leaving 50% of south oil share to Arab and now come to talk about 2% of unity state share????

              Marco Nyak,

You are totally lost in what you wanted to convey. Angelina Teny is not the minister of Energy and Mining in the South. The minister is John Luk Jok.

Angelina Teny is the state minister of Energy and Mining in Khartoum, not in South Sudan. The 2% of oil revenue to Unity state came through her office in Khartoum to Bentiu. So she knows that Taban Deng used to get the 2% which he did not utilize for the benefit of the state citizens.

So don’t get confused between ministry of Energy and Mining in the South and that of state minister of Energy and Mining in the North. I hope you are now clear.

Mohamed. What is your point? Do you want to confirm there is no problem with the description of beauty? or do you have an Arab tactic of urging African ethnics to fight them selves as your ancestors did since 1950s? You are mistake your dream will be prove wrong soon, we are chaos only but action will not be exist because south Sudan now is became mature enough, we are polling our politicians legs to wake up Mr Ibn Abullahi, so give your self a break we are not serious to fight our selves, we know very well most of Arab from Sudan to middle east are dreaming, that south will fight it self after their independent then the north will take it by force again such as what was happen to Yamen El Junubia 1994.

I can assure you that will not happen again ever ever and ever Mr. Mohamed, as in your information the only people who have understood Arab thoughts is the during the long term sharing citizenship, so be always alert of that even if you said this one is written in Quran the only one who will answer it is any ordinary southerner, because they have study Quran in their lives by force.

Mrs A. Is she your mother or is she going to serve in your house once elected? and who the fuck are you to question others about their indentity, whenever someone opposes your shallow and tribalistic views......huh?

Then you find yourself in problem with tribalist who have no idea about the otherside of the coin.

Every reader on this board feels sorry about this naive thinking that steam out of people capable of writing such kind of notes. We know who sleeps with who amongst those ladies in power, including their health status regarding HIV, but those are personal issues and may do South Sudanese harm rather than good.

But Baka, you may be a Sudanese with a gut to say what you want to said when you want it. Don’t be intimidated by ignorants who are personally losing their noms and values. We South Sudanese have value to respect our ladies. What is hapening here is not less than madness. Taban Deng Gai himself can not support that language against Man-Teny let alone the rest.

She is competent, well educated and partriotic enough for the seat. She spoke in my presence in 2002 when many people in southern Sudan did not know how to express their issues well to the public. In the high delegation led by the late Dr. John Garang, she was among the top five speakers whom their messages were appealing to the Sudanese masses in the diaspora. I know Taban has suffered from her rhetoric and pursuasion during campgain rallies. Congratulation if she win. No hatred please.

This must be a special news for Unity State. This is what I been telling people that Taban will be wondering in Juba pretty soon for the people of Unity State have spoken loud and clear. It’s a big lesson to many who have abandoned their constituencies to appease others and practice corruption. Mr. Taban has forgotten where he came from and this will be a lesson learnt for all corrupted officials and unfortunately for our party, SPLM. You must pay attention when people speak and you protect their interest that’s why party flourish and scores numerous win streaks. Warnings been there but our PB failed to respect the decision of people. As election results rolls in, SPLM will have many surprises in days to come.

As many of you know that I am 100% for Gov. Kuol and Pres. Kiir to win their elections. Forks, our country is changing for good and hope for many blessings ahead of our referendum.

The evil and its gangs are defeated. Can’t you see how they expose their foolishness and disrespect to Angelina Teny by calling her names. They are street grown men without parents, otherwise they should respect her and not treat her like their agemates.

Who tell you that Angelina Teny is queen? and who tell you that Governor Taban Deng Gai is coward and housekeeper for Dinka? are you really not having very low IQ.Who tell you than Bentiu is genesis? Haaaaaaaa. Wow!, I will go to run for any leadership position in Bentiu so that you can give me adjective names and any position with my wive.

        Dear Peter,

Thank you for your comments. I do hope this so called Taban will fit in other position within the government of South Sudan because even if he is capable in governing people. I know how hard for being the top man in the state but giving away single inch of your state land to your enemy proves you that you do not deserve to lead the nation because we lost hundred thousand lives because of the land, look at Isreal, they elect their leader and when ever that leader comes closer to make a deal with arabs, they immediately kick him/her away because you can get any qualified person to lead but not the land.Let see the results and my best wishes to Angelina.

KHARTOUM, Sudan — Elections just held in Sudan did not meet "international standards", EU monitors and former US president Jimmy Carter said on Saturday.

The country’s first competitive elections in more than two decades "struggled to meet international standards" but did not entirely succeed, EU vote monitoring chief Veronique de Keyser said in Khartoum.

Carter also said the elections "fall short" of meeting international standards.

"Turnout is very high, 60 percent, but with significant deficiencies ... Theses elections did not reach international standards, not yet," De Kuyser told a news conference.

"They have not reached them all but some of them," she said.

But De Kuyser said the fact that there were domestic poll watchers proves the keenness for "democratic transformation."

The election was a "major step that opens up democratic space in Sudan."

Africa’s largest country held its first multi-party elections in two decades, but with the polls’ legitimacy brought into question by the withdrawal of the two main opponents to the re-election of President Omar al-Beshir.

Three days of voting, which began on Sunday, were extended until Thursday because of a series of delays and logistical problems.

Around 16 million registered Sudanese voters had been asked to choose their presidential, legislative and local representatives. Southerners also voted for the leader of the autonomous government of south Sudan.

On Thursday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon hailed the election and urged all sides to conclude the electoral process without violence.

But as the counting continued, one top UN official in the south of the country warned on Friday that the impoverished region faced a major food crisis that could effect millions of people.

"We have a very general problem of food insecurity across all of southern Sudan," Lisa Grande, the UN Deputy Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Juba, south Sudan, told AFP.

"We are looking at a situation where 4.3 million people require some forms of food assistance during the year," she said.

Failed harvests, people displaced for security reasons and rising food prices have all combined to create a "humanitarian perfect storm," Grande said.

Seven out of the 10 southern states were in trouble, she added.

"What we are avoiding is a free fall, when people are dying in mass. We are in a situation of struggle. We are at the break," Grande warned.

Voting proceeded calmly in most places, but the results could ignite tensions in more contested areas, particularly in south Sudan.

De Kuyser said there were "more irregularities in the south than the north".

The election was seen as a bid to restore Beshir’s stature after he was indicted by the International Criminal Court in March 2009 for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in the western region of Darfur.

An aide to Beshir, Nafie Ali Nafie, said on Thursday that Beshir’s re-election would prove allegations against him are "false."

                Dear readers,

How could you expect the elections to be of Western standard when it is the first one after 24 years? And besides South Sudan’s 90% of population is illiterate and it is their first time to vote, monitor voting or facilitate polling.

It is irrational for any observer to think that it can be of western standard overnight.

At least it was peaceful for now and very successful. Let us congratulate ourselves. In USA during the last term of President Bush’s re-election, it took alot of rigging here in Florida where Bush’s brother was the governor. So where is such a standard after 200 years of independence where elections take place in every four years compared to 24 years in Sudan?

                Leave us alone!!!
